Upgrading Tivo... need some assistance

Okay, I may have just gotten dumb since I first upgraded my Tivo, but I seem to be having some issues here.

First the overview:

I have a Sony first generation Tivo running 3.x software. It has the original Quantum 30GB drive and a second Maxtor 80GB I added when the unit was new. I want to replace the Quantum 30GB primary drive with a larger Maxtor 120GB part.

Since I've got my Tivo loaded up with saved recordings, I want to preserve them when upgrading.

So, I read the Hinsdale-How-To (HHT), downloaded MFS Tools v2.0 and got my new drive ready. I pulled the 30GB out of the Tivo and installed it along with the new Maxtor 120GB in a system. I booted from the MFS CD and then got confused...

From looking at the HHT, it would seem that I should simply do the following:

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hda

However, when I do this, I get a pile of errors and no joy. I know both drives are connected and mounted so I'm a bit lost at this point.

Thanks for the assistance!

Mike

You need to copy both 30GB and 80GB drives to the 120GB drive. Then add the 80GB back as drive B.

If that doesn't work (because the new drive is too small). Use dd to clone the A drive on to the new one and then use mfsadd to expand.

If you do that, consider expanding swap manually as in the third post of the Fixes thread.

Okay, this is the first chance I've had to try again.

I put both my Tivo A and B drives in the PC, along with the new 120GB drive.

I added /dec/hdb to the source side of the command. When I run it, it reports:

Source Drive is 30 hours
- Upgraded to 115 hours

Uncompress backup size: 103278 megabytes

Then it just dumps back to the command prompt.

If I'm reading this right, it should have the space to perform this operation. What the heck am I missing?

Thanks!

Mike
