Trim front/end of recorded shows

I think it would be really cool if we could trim off the front or end of shows. This way, if the network is off timewise, and I get a minute or 2 or 3 of commercials, or the beginning of the next show, or the end of the last show, I can trim off the excess, and reuse that storage space.
Granted, I have a 30-hour TiVo, so I'm not really that pressed. But, if I could save even 1 minute from the front or end of each show, I might be able to squeeze in another 1/2 hour recording.
And, while we are at it, why not allow us to trim out the commercials? If I want to save a show to my VCR, I really don't want the commercials to come along for the ride. And, if you thought the savings of a minute or two from each show wouldn't add up, then figure how many more 1/2 hour shows we could record if we added up all the time spent in commercials (which I know is wasted space to me). Of course, this would only work if you watched the show once, and wanted to keep it on TiVo, and as you watched it, you tagged the unwanted times. But, the real reason for me to trim the commercials is so that they won't come for the ride onto my VCR. And, when you go to watch it later, you don't have to fast-forward through commercials. (OK, how many of us bought TiVo because we hated the headache of ff'ing through the commercials on our VCR?)

This is a fairly common request. TiVo has even pledged this kind of capability will be in future software releases, but for now they are focus more on the basics of the PVR concept. Maybe in 3.0 http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/smile.gif
