Edward James Olmos, the star of the new ``Battlestar Galactica,'' has some advice for devoted fans of the 1970s sci-fi series: Don't watch the remake.
Pretty bad when a star is telling you not to watch his show.

I"m going to be opened minded about the remake. I'm going to watch the remake as if I never seen the orginal. Got to be opened minded!!!!!

It has to be better than Galactica 1980.

I watched these again this year for the first time since 1980. Horrible...

"remake is going to suck"
Oh Please, the show is not even in the can yet.
The usual crap coming from the Sci-Fi Channel haters. Yes Farscape was canceled by the Sci-Fi Channel. yeah bad move on their part.
GET OVER IT !

Almost the entire Galactica fanbase has rejected the new show. The script was leaked and has been posted on the internet. It has almost zero simularities with the old show. I won't go into some of it because of spoliers, but one example I wouldn't consider spoilerish, Starbuck is now a woman, so is Boomer.
Sci-fi.com's MB was so out of control with anti-remake posts that they went to a heavly-moderated board and ran off most of the traffic there.
Even one of the star's of the show is telling fans of the old NOT to watch
quote:
From TV Guide.com
EDWARD JAMES UH-OH: Sci Fi Channel president Bonnie Hammer visibly squirmed at Tuesday's TCA presentation for Battlestar Galactica, where star Edward James Olmos revealed that devotees of the original '70s TV show are sending him hate mail. Apparently, they've heard Sci Fi's four-hour fall miniseries is a very loosely based remake, and they ain't happy. "If you're a die-hard fan of the original Battlestar Galactica, please don't watch," Olmos declared. "Sci Fi Channel wants you to think everyone will like this. They won't! So please, don't watch! Buy the DVD of the original series, and when we're on, pop it in instead! I don't want you writing me any more letters!"

Well, from what I've read, Sci-Fi has never called this a "remake". I've seen it referred to as a "reimagining". Basically take the basic idea of the original story and recraft a new script. IMHO a reimagining has the potential to be more interesting than a remake.

Reading the article - a practice I highly recommend before commenting - I see it says:

I don't see him as trying to scare off new viewers.

You are right, casual viewer's might like it. The problem with most Galactica fans is that it is called "Battlestar Galactica". If it was called anything else, fans would not have a problem with it.
I'm not a super-fan, but there are those who have been trying for 20 years to get some sort of Galactica product out there. What Sci-fi is doing is taking and 're-imaging' this and putting it out there.
It's not really re-imaging in my mind, about the only things that are even close are the Viper designs (which I think look really better), the old Cylon design(they are not in the show much) and the names of the characters. The writer(Ron Moore) took elements of Star Trek, T2, US naval ships and Gulf War 2 and spliced them together.
The Galactica fandom has been told to go "f themselves" by the entire Sci-fi network.
His comment might not scare off new viewers, but the old ones(which would be the ones I would want to attract) will be.
Even some of the current re-imaging productions (ie Smallville) tries to keep some basic lifeline to the original. Even Enterprise crappy as it is at times at least kinda tries.

well said. He was just saying "IF" you are a hardcore Battlestar Galactica of the 70's fan. This is not a step by step remake, an you may be disappointed in the 2003/2004 Battlestar Galactica.
I say Great. The 70's Battlestar Galactica was done to death. Lets have something new. ;)

When is this airing?
Posted by: Fustanella
I'll be watching it and making a decision to keep or nuke the SP based on my level of interest, not what hype or anti-hype say about it.

The phrase, by the way, is "re-imagining". And if ever there was a show that needed re-imagining, BG was it! (Although that kind of implies that it was imagined in the first place, which is arguable... :D)

Yeah. Anyone notice the religious overtones in the original? :D

Alex, I'll take "Things that never ever ever need to be Re-made" for $200 ...

It will air in December.

There was Mormon overtones. This new one also has strong religious ties as the Cylon's God wants them to attack the humans, ala the extreme factions of Islam want to attack America.

I'm going to add my two cents to this ridiculous discussion. Let me quote:
quote:
From there, things get difpferent. Starbuck, the hotshot fighter pilot played by Dirk Benedict in the original, is now a woman played by Katee Sackhoff of ``The Education of Max Bickford.'' Some characters, such as Sheba, the pilot played by Ann Lockhart, are missing. The show appears to be darker, sexier and a lot less escapist than the original.
These changes are irrelevant to the core story line, and therefore they are not reason enough to reject this new miniseries. The character changes are very minor. The key characters are still there, except there is now a more balanced gender distribution. Minor characters have been changed.
I'm a big fan of the original series, and I will watch this new version. I will keep an open mind and judge it on its own strengths. I will not bias myself by making an unfair comparison to the original show.

Or the way the Pope wanted Christian extremists to attack Muslim lands during the Crusades. It's no different.

The one that really kills it for me is Starbuck. They can make Boomer (or Apollo, for that matter) female and it doesn't change the character that much; but Starbuck was a man, and proud of it (why do I feel weird typing that? ;)). If they made Starbuck female, then it's not really Starbuck anymore; they might as well have changed the name.

That is the whole arguement with the show, it's not really Battlestar Galactica, they should have just changed the name.
BTW they did make Boomer female, a white female

The things I liked about the original Battlestar Galactica were the look of the show and the Exodus theme. The original show had those Egyptian looking helmets and the insignia swiped from intelligence or some sort of weird army thing. The theme was religous but I thought of it more as persecuted people looking for their homeland. (and leading the Cylons straight to Earth, the schmucks!!)
The new one does not have even a similar look to it. Changing the characters around does not bother me.

This is not aimed at anyone that has posted here, but I've read elsewhere on various boards that original fans don't want ANYTHING changed from the original.
My question then is, why not just watch the original?
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this. It might be great, or it might suck big time (reference the Lost In Space movie.... hatchie matchie!!!)

There are some who would not want to change anything, but most want a continuation ie ST:TNG. There are a lot of flaws that could be corrected, but most do want the original concepts kept.
I would have liked (if they wanted to re-image it) to have kept some of the original concepts, but really the only thing they kept was the names of people and that robots killed off their society. Even the premis of the show(to find Earth) has changed if the script was not changed during shooting.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Adama tells the people that they are searching for Earth, but confides to someone that he made Earth up, that there is no such place, but he wanted the people to have something to hope for.
Some people find offense that the new show is more adult than the original, in my mind, that is the price of a more mature viewing audience. The original was more of a kid's/young adult show whereas this one will be a bit more mature. That does not bother me.
Most fans are pissed the way Sci-fi dealt with them. They had Tom DeSanto to do the film, but after working on it for a while, he left to do X2(his idea was to revamp but keep as much as the old as possible). Ron Moore took over and things are the way they are now.
Sci-fi has not done anything to help bridge the old and new. They are telling the old fans who don't know what it will be like that they will love it, but EJO has publically came out 3 times, the last at a press conference in front of the head of the Sci-fi channel and told the reporters to tell the old fans that they will not like it and to stay away. Bonnie Hammer was visibly upset with hearing this but she has no friends in the scifi community with her treatment of that channel. She has screwed up all of their orginal programming by getting rid of shows like Farscape and getting shows like the Dream Team and Scare Tatics.
I will watch the show, and if it is good will be the first to admit it(I'm sure others will not be that generous) but from what I have read, it will be just like every other scifi clone movie that is out there now.

...which would put it head and shoulders (and chest and waist and maybe even knees) above the original! :D

Interesting interview with the show's produce, Ronald Moore. It gives me hope this may yet be more than another bland sci fi show (a la Enterprise).

It premiered September 17, 1978... cool, that was my tenth birthday. :D
I'm reserving judgment, especially after reading the abovelinked article. If it's as good as they're spinning it, I'll be one of the first in line pushing Sci Fi to not be idiots by not turning it into a series. If not, I'll enjoy the ride and bitch here.

look at it this way....they could have made it:
Battlestar Galactica meets V!
or V Galactica!
or Battlestar V!
now wouldn't you be even more upset if that happened?..:)...though upset and intrigued.
i'm only 30 so don't remeber much of battlestar galactica but i know i didn't dig that whole religious thing they were all about. and that old guy being all solemn and ppl just following him, whatever that was about. where were the popular uprisings to de-throne this man-king?
or you know....maybe boomer or star-runner or cameltoes or whatever thier wacked out names are could meet up with buck rogers.....these homeless religious space ppl could try to invade thier 'homeland', earth, and buck rogers could lead the fight against them, to defend the planet..:)
now that might be interesting.
tweeky would kick that little robot dogs butt!
(or twiggy or twacky or whatever his darn name was)
p.s. i'll be watchin' the show :)

Well not changing anything is one thing, but this sounds like they are changing a whole lot. At some point you have to wonder why they just don't call it something else. If they are going to keep the name, they ought to keep some stuff the same... otherwise its just a completely different show.
Isn't the point of remaking a show to keep the existing audience? Otherwise, why not start from scratch.
Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

According to the article, there was a desire by the studio to remake BG, making it easier to pitch the concept than coming in with "CombatStar JoeBob" or something in the ballpark but not on base.

I re-watched the Galactica 1980 earlier this year when SciFi re-ran them (all 10 episodes ... woo hoo!).
I nearly fell out of my chair when I realized Troy (Kent McCord) is John Crichton's dad in Farscape. I KNEW that guy looked familiar. :)
