Can I swap programs with series 1?

I have a Sony SVR 2000 for several years (we loved it), and after a year of nursing it and going through manual program guide syncs., the crappy modem in there has finally died. I will be using this as and excuse to get a series 2, and Tivo will allow me to transfer my lifetime service, so that is great!

There is nothing else wrong with my old Tivo, and will probably move it into the bedroom so I can use at least the 30 Min. buffer.

What I would really like to do is network the old Tivo with the dead modem to the new Tivo (if possible) to share the recorded programs in the bedroom. I have seen some of the aftermarket cards that allow one to put a Tivo on a computer network. Will this kind of card also work in a Peer to Peer setup between Tivos?

If I record a program on the New Series 2 I'm getting, will I be able to watch it from the old Tivo if I network the two? Will I need a network card for the series 2, or does it come with a network connection already (I think it does, right?)

I can build a computer from scratch, add voltage modifications to motherboards and video cards, and overclock the heck out of them (I water cool PC's for a hobby), so I should be able to install any necessary hardware, but when it comes to writing code lines I'm far from adept at that.

Suggestions?

Thank you!

Sorry, I don't know of any way to do what you want. A TurboNet card in your old TiVo will allow to *cough*extract* recorded programs to your PC, but not share them with a series2. HMO doesn't work at all for series1 TiVos. The series2 come with a USB connector, to which you can attach a USB-to-ethernet converter in order to put it on a LAN. But that doesn't do any good for sharing programs with your older machine.

Thanks Cletus! I was afraid of that, but I had to ask!

I don't know series 2 Tivos at all, but what you describe is trivial between Tivos 1's. But, in any case, we're not allowed to discuss it here.

Can you PM me with a little more detail then? Thanks!

So, if I were to allow one Tivo to file share a program I recorded on it (like a television series) with another Tivo I have in my own bedroom so I could watch it in there, Tivo considers this a copyright infringement? I thought the laws applied to redistribution to third persons or re-broadcasting only.

I can't see how sharing a file or program in my own house could violate any laws at all, as I am paying for the privilege to watch it anywhere and any time I please in the first place.

Can you help enlighten me on this?

Thanks!

How dare you think that YOU are the customer and TIVO is the humble provider of 'The customer is always right!!'

The list of things Tivo won't do or let you do is quite lengthy..... How zippyc got lifetime transferred for his bad unit is beyond me....They wouldn't do it for me. Probably because I paid only $199 for lifetime back when Tivo was struggling for customers. How soon they bit the hands that gave them birth.

In any case, so as not to go off subject, I would like to transfer ONLY programs between 2 of my Tivo's using the direct hard-drive transfer method without spending money on the Tivo ethernet card. I have as yet been unable to find the instructions using mfstools or whatever.

So if I, too could get an e-mail on how to do it, it would be much appreciated. john_tsouris@hotmail.com

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
