Ever wonder how TiVo allocates the user and reserve space on the hard drive(s) in your TiVo? Well here is the answer.

The difference between the hard drive size and the user space is the reserve space. As you can see there are a number of undesirable areas on the graph. Everything above 70GBs is linear.

Hard drive size is a bit misleading, it is actually the total space in the mfs media region(s) on the hard drive(s). You can get the exact number via pdisk or the third number from the output of get_space command in Tivoweb distribution (it's in sectors, so divide by 2 to get the number of KBs).
