Firefly... Gone but not forgotten
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Firefly is up for an emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series.
Personally, I don't know how they could be praising the special effects for Firefly, but it's good to see they were not forgotten. They are up against Buffy, and three episodes of Enterprise.

Don't lose hope yet...found this on Darkhorizons.com:
quote:
Meanwhile "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon confirmed to Sci-FI Wire that a film based on his failed sci-fi series "Firefly" is in the works which he'll write & direct - "What's happening with that is that I'm writing a script and I have some interest. But I won't know really until I finish a draft whether or not it's genuine. ... We have a pretty decent shot. It's not a crazed pipe dream".
On topic now...man...three episodes of Enterprise and onf of Buffy. That just shows how little sci-fi is out now. I would think it's a shoe-in.

Actually, the Enterprise nominations might pull it off as the special effects on there have been pretty good. Too bad the writing can't match.
What I'm more stunned about is Enterprise's nomination for best dramatic score. Background music is one place where it almost always falls down.....

Yeah, say what you want about Enterprise, but the effects are generally very good. Shows like Firefly and Farscape are not quite as impressive, although Farscape did have some very good effects work in the final episodes. I'm surprised it didn't get nominated, since the Firefly effects weren't that great if I remember correctly. I did like that one Firefly scene where they flew Serenity through the energy ring. Is that the ep that got nominated?
Posted by: JYoung
Firefly was nominated for "Serenity". I think that the special effects for that episode were pretty good. You had the battle of Serenity Valley, the ship chase, and that great scene of Serenity doing a roll and going into full burn ("Let's moon them").
I could see them winning......

Also available at Video Universe. A couple of bucks less, but if you choose the slow, free shipping at Amazon, you come out ahead there.

Woo Hoo!
As soon as I get that DVD, I can take all my Firefly episodes off of Save Until I Delete.

According to Jess Wheadon, YES! I've downloaded them, but they're really crappy quality. I'm going to buy the box set JUST for those 3 episodes.

It's back down to 3 now. I bet Fox is feeling really vindicated, ne c'est pas?

Amazon has removed the "pre-order" function. They now say:
"THIS TITLE IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE. If you would like to purchase this title, we recommend that you occasionally check this page to see if it has become available"

Can you say "Swamped"?
Posted by: tivospav
so what happens if you already pre-ordered it...I didn't get there in time so I wouldn't know...just curious.
Posted by: stevel
I doubt "swamped" is the reason. It could be that the pricing data was wrong, or something else. Curious that the few other web stores I shop for DVDs at don't list it either.
Posted by: jmoak
Ok, maybe I could have picked a better term than "swamped", but still...
Amazon has sold out their allotted first shipment five months before the release date.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
I doubt very much they've "sold out" -- I think Steve has it. The listing was probably premature.

Well, I ain't gonna swear to it, but that's what amazon says.:)
For those who missed the amazon preorder, it's also avaiable for preorder at bestbuy.com:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...19&type=product
...and at Video Universe:
http://www.cduniverse.com/productin...&cart=152104024
and for our canadian friends:
http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/AS...0606014-1200026
and while we're on the subject:
from http://www.fireflyfans.net/news.asp?newsid=401
"Canadian's sci-fi cable channel, SPACE: The Imagination Station, will be airing episodes of Firefly weekly at 9:00/8:00pm CST beginning Monday, September 8th. Furthermore, all episodes (including the US unaired episodes) will air in the correct order as originally produced and not in the order that was aired on the FOX network."

No, all it says is "not available"...
Posted by: jmoak
ok, i give.
I was just lying. The girl I talked to at amazon was full of it, too. The other sites also made a mistake and prematurely listed it. The links actually go nowhere. I made them up. I'm just full of poop and posting just to make my count go up. Can you ever forgive me?
;)
I'm just picking at you, Rob. ... but the little girl at amazon sounded like she knew what she was talking about....
She did know what she was talking about!!!!!!!
from CNN:
"(Mutant Enemy president Christopher) Buchanan said fans created such a demand that DVD presales on Amazon.com sold out within 24 hours."
:)

I was feeling good when I preordered at Amazon.
I felt really good when I got the email conformation.
Now I am feeling great knowing that I got in before they (sold out, re-priced, etc.).
Of course, I now expect a "Dear Amazon Shopper, we are sorry to inform you that....." email. :p

BestBuy.com must not like me anymore. Every time I follow any URL there, I get their "It'll be worth the wait" page. The only way I can access the site is if I go to the physical store and get on a kiosk.
And from what I see there, they got rid of their New Releases search. I used that exclusively to find new releases. (Amazon only gives 10 results per page.)

Hmmm...I was going by what the web site said. Maybe the little girl at Amazon knows better...
(But do bear in mind that the little girl at Amazon lives in India, and probably knows what the generic script in front of her says.)
The reason for my skepticism is simply that the discs will not have gone into manufacture yet, so there's no reasonable way for it to "sell out"--they will set the production levels high enough to cover any pre-orders (plus what they expect to sell beyond that).
Amazon quite frequently will list something, then pull it for some reason, then relist later. Sometimes, they will list something early, then relist it when they're ready to take pre-orders, so there will be two listings. Making sense of Amazon's database and the reasons for its condition is not always easy!
But I will dig deep in my heart and try to find a way to forgive you... :D

Back to the special effects for a second:
The sequence where the firefly crew watched out the window while the big battle cruiser destroyed the ship next to them was great. That was the first time I noticed there were no sound effects for the space scenes. Imagine hearing J.W. explaining to the special effects department, "No, I DON'T want to hear the explosions!"
And the 'torture' episode, (forgive my lack of memory for episode names/numbers), had an awesome pull back followed by a zoom that changed your perspective from one side of a moon to the other in about 3 seconds. I tivo'ed that one over and over.
I think the reason no one remembers 'great' special effects in Firefly is that they weren't done to draw attention. They moved the story line and then got out of the way.

Well, my preorder is still safely sitting there, with a delivery date of Dec. 17-19. I'm waiting for that "Dear John" email too, but I hope I don't get it, save me the step of re-pre-ordering.

Bet you can't say that three times fast
In any case, whether we buy it at Amazon or Best Buy or whatever, I suspect that this DVD will be more successful than the show (relatively speaking of course).
I also bet that the future of any Firefly movie will be influenced in a big way by the sales of the DVD.

Are you suggesting we take the Scientologist route of buying up multiple copies of Battlefield Earth to raise its ranking in the bestseller category and apply it to Firefly?

Found the problem. They won't let you browse their site unless you accept their cookies, but the page they redirect you to if you refuse doesn't tell you that! Their old site let you browse without cookies. The new one redirects you to http://www.bestbuy.com/?i=true if your browser rejects cookies.
It's not like they demand you carry a tracking device with you everywhere you go in their brick & mortar store (yet).

If you are one of us who got your pre-order in back then, time to cancel it and re-pre-order it, since the newly available version of the pre-order is a few bucks lower in price.
