Newbie about to upgrade

I have several questions about starting my upgrade. I hope people here can answer them, because even after researching various web sites, I am still a little confused. I have a Series 1 Sony SVR 2000

1. I want to boost the TiVo to it's max capacity. I know ptvupgrade has written a special driver so that the TiVo can access drives greater than a certain amount. Without having to buy or write a driver such as that, what is the maximum drive capacity I can use? Is there a freeware version of the driver available?

2. I know that I can put up to two drives in my TiVo. Should I replace the first one or add a second one? If I add a second drive initially, will I be able to replace the first one with a larger drive?. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is impossible to replace the first drive if you first add a second drive.

3. The network card - is the Turbonet card on 9thTee.com my only choice? Can I use a standard network adapter (I have not opened up the Tivo yet, so I don't what kind of slot and how much space I have)? Any other choices?

Thanx for your help and advice.

See the end of the 160Gb sticky thread in the Underground for full instructions on making your own large drive. I would definitely replace your current drive and only add a second drive later if you need it. MFS Tools 2.0 makes it possible to expand your A drive later, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Turbonet is the only network card for a TiVo - a card designed for a PC won't work in a TiVo.
