PAX revisited

Why can't the programming, what little there is, be distributed among some of the other more useless channels? How many people really watch this channel? I ask this because I was just surfing the guide and noticed hours upon hours of Paid Programming on this channel. Just more wasted bandwidth, IMO.

Posted by: myriadian

i think mostly because pax is all about the christians and thier snively dramas.

but, it's program guide also represents the basic usefulness of the typical pax viewer ;)
lots of empty space.

I know from your past posts that The PAX Channel is your white Whale. And you believe PAX is sucking up Bandwidth from WB an UPN on DTV. PAX is on DTV to stay. So Please get over it already.

Maybe you can get WB & UPN with Dishnet

Posted by: JimSpence

I'm glad you noticed. Actually, there are a lot of white whales out there. I've evolved to include many other channels, too numerous to list here.:) There are a few windmills to be attacked as well. And the way WB and UPN are going there won't be much on to interest me there either.:(

Posted by: keirgrey

And when it isn't showing the latest from the Gazelle or Bowflex, it's showing Dick Van Dyke!

myriadian, that was rather rudely put, especially that first sentence.

Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the network either. I do watch the channel, but only from 10:30-11:05 because they re-air the NBC affiliate newscast. I watch the 10:00 news on the ABC affiliate, then flip over to PAX to watch the NBC affiliate newscast.

Other than that, the network is in pretty sad shape, I agree. Lots of re-airs of "Diagnosis: Murder" and really bad TV movies. I applaud the concept of providing family-safe television - the execution left a little to be desired though.

And I agree, they probably should be dropped from DirecTV - as far as I know, they no longer qualify as a network, because they don't have enough hours of original programming. UPN is risking this fate as well... only WB has a fairly strong slate of programming. Of the three netlets, WB's likely the only to survive.

I thought the only thing PAX showed was Supermarket Sweep 24 hours a day.

Posted by: JimSpence

LoadStar,
Can't you watch the NBC affiliate newscast on your NBC affiliate? I mean you could TiVo it and watch it later. :) And skip the commercials. The PAX we have on cable, doesn't do news.

According to the FCC both WB and UPN aren't real networks now. Go figure. And, wouldn't it be great if WB and UPN merged and put on their good shows? Are there enough?

Posted by: LoadStar

I'd question your statement that the WB isn't a real network. I know there was plenty talk about UPN going to a "limited network" status when they dropped a bunch of programming, but as far as I know, WB continues to be considered a full network.

WB certainly has quite a few good shows - maybe not shows you enjoy, but I know I will continue to watch Angel as long as it's on, and I watch Charmed and the Jamie Kennedy Experiment off and on. I'm sure there are others on here that are avid Smallville and Everwood fans as well - I'm not among them, but I'm told they're both very good shows.

As for UPN - the only show I am considering watching is Jake 2.0. Other than that, none of their shows even remotely appeal to me.

Regarding the news - like I said, I watch the ABC news at the normal time, and the NBC news at the later time. I have a stand-alone, so I can't tivo two shows at once.

Okay, if WB is a full network it should have the same status as the other networks with regard to getting waivers so that one can buy the distant net. DirecTV doesn't have that option. I have waivers for ABC, NBC, and Fox but not CBS. My WB is a cable only affiliate so I should be able to get a waiver to buy WB from DirecTV. I'm not talking locals here since my location doesn't have locals available. If WB has had its status upgraded to full network by the FCC then let me buy it if I qualify.

Agreed that WB has good shows and I put up with Enterprise on UPN. They should merge, never happen of course.:)

Who watches PAX? My wife!!!

She watches all those shallow no-heart shows like Chicken Soup for the Soul.

BARF!!! Well, it is not sucking up bandwidth on my cable network and I live in a Bible thumping town. There are a lot of so-called family friendly shows on TV so why bother with this network?

I would like to see a religious TV station that showed Jewish, Buddhist, Wiccan, mainstream Christian and other shows not just the 700 Club. PBS does a decent job. Now the PBS station in Orange County (CA not FL) is in danger of being bought out by a religious broadcaster.

Posted by: rtype

I deleted all of the other religious channels on my DirecTivo (took them out of channels I receive) but I left PAX thinking something I wanted might be on it at some point. Maybe I was mistaken.

Posted by: sieglinde

I don't get Pax but I know that it does have repeats of old TV shows on it so it is apparently not a religious channel. I think there may be some original movies also.

Posted by: LoadStar

Correct. PAX is not a religious network. It is a network designed to be "family-safe" or "family friendly." Mostly, this means shows and movies that don't have sex or sexual innuendo, language, or graphic violence.

Posted by: Graymalkin

PAX also has three original drama series, Doc, Sue Thomas F.B. Eye and Just Cause. I doubt they're very compelling, but it's better than reality sleaze.

PAX isn't a relgious network. I don't know why people think this. Although, I admit I used to. My wife likes the channel. She digs that supermarket sweep. I appluad the desire that owners had to make a family safe network. I wish them luck in their endevors. I know they are trying (or at least I hope they are) and if the fates shine on them perhaps it'll happen. I have two small kids and I know what it's like to try to watch shows that are safe for them. Many times when my oldest (whose 2.5 years old) is up we'll watch bear in the big blue house or out of the box (very multicultural kids show which I think is good) or stanley until she goes to sleep then we'll watch law and order / csi / nypd blue or whatever. thank goodness for tivo. i feel bad sometimes if i'm watching csi and some graphic depiction comes on and i see her looking at it in awe. i don't know if it affects her not. i tend to believe that children are all innocent and I don't want to be responsible for taking that from her too soon so i can protect her from the outside world then i'll do it. before long she'll be 5 and going to school and who knows what'll happen then. don't get me wrong, i don't keep her at home all the time. we go out just like any other normal family and she has kids she enjoys playing with and we go to the mall and she plays in the play area with the other kids. i'm just saying, i don't see why i should bring in adult orientated tv and watch it around her if i don't have to. so if there's a network out there that is striving to provide family orientated tv then more power to them. we shouldn't be knocking them for doing it.

Posted by: jones07

My wife and younger children also enjoy the PAX channel. Finally PAX fans are speaking up :p

It's a nice little network nothing fancy. But more people then most thinks watch PAX. And that's why DTV backed down an kept it in their line up.

I vaguely recall hearing of a spiritual-not-religious channel a while back. If my brain dredges up the name, I'll edit my post.

Posted by: sieglinde

I think a channel named Odessy (misspelled) did that but I never found out which cable companys had it.

Posted by: Fustanella

Ding, that's the one. I wonder if they're still kicking. It seemed a great idea and still does, if but to help offset the hypocricy of televangelism.

Posted by: LoadStar

Odyssey was purchased and became the Hallmark Channel. It never really was a religious channel either. That was yet another "family-friendly" network, though they did carry some religious programming. They still do air a "Worship in America" on Sunday mornings that shows a variety of Christian worship services, including a protestant one, a catholic mass, and I think one or two others. Kind of intriguing to see several different ways that Christians gather to worship.

Posted by: kyote

My wife really likes Music and the Spoken Word. It comes on sundays on some channel. don't know which since it's tivo'd.

Posted by: sieglinde

I don't get Hallmark channel either.

I remember as a kid seeing a program on TV that was done by a group called the Paulists (I think). They may be a Catholic group. It was half an hour dramas with a point and those were excellent. They taught ethics and morals rather than preaching at you. Normon Vincent Peal had a show and he was some sort of Catholic clergy and these shows were popular with everyone and he didn't evangelize for the Catholic church but gave nice talks.

Why can't religion on TV be like that? I do watch Religion and Ethics News Weekly on my local PBS channel and he covers all of the religions making news and some that are just interesting. He did an article on a native Vietnamese religion called Cao Dai. Very interesting. The rest of TV assumes that there is only one religion in the entire world.

The Hallmark channel is on channel 312. It's available in the Total Choice package.
