According to TV Guide, NBC has given the greenlight to a Friends spinoff, featuring Joey Tribbiani, to start in September, 2004.

If I were Matt LeBlanc, I'd pass. It's not like he needs the money. Plus, he's tempting the fates with a Friends' version of the Seinfeld curse.
EDIT: BTW, "Joey" is not the official name of the show. I have no idea what it will be. I just used "Joey" for brevity in the header.

LeBlanc has consistently been the one who wanted a spin-off. He likes the character, and his film career has been mediocre.
As for me, I wanted the inevitable spin-off series to be "Gunther!"

Maybe he's betting on the Friend's version of the Fraser success. What else has he done lately. I'll probably give it a chance.

Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle
My mom said he was one of the few bright spots.

Right, I forgot. He did do a good job in that. I guess it obviously just wasn't a memorable performance, at least for me. A bit of a bit part.

I don't think your mom was their target audience. I, being a guy, found there to be several bright spots. Admittedly, though, some movies you just have to go into knowing you must check your brain at the door and enjoy it for what it is.

Not really, but she does usually like that kind of movie. She said her main annoyance was them giggling all the time. She said it got real old real quick. She said Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu provided lots of eye candy.

As long as Joey doesn't end up raising Ross and Rachel's baby on his own.

I’ll reserve judgment on how this whole things going to go until its actually on the air or at least has a few cast members, but is there anybody who heard rumors of a spinoff featuring Matt LeBlanc and thought to themselves, “as long as they don’t name it “Joey!” they’ve got a chance"?
Hopefully they come up with something a bit better, because in my mind no title screams “bland sitcom retread” more than a show called Joe.

Well, a previous version of this story was that they were going to spin off Ross and Joey together and call it "The Ross & Joey Show".....

Remember, he already was in a failed spin-off from "Married With Children" about 10 years ago. He's brave to want to try again.

I wonder if he will hook up with Ms. Jane and fight with Mr. Drysdale.

I wouldn't mind seeing a spinoff with little Emma's nanny - Molly (Melissa George).
To quote Ross: "So hot, I cried myself to sleep last night."

One thing about the artice bothered me "Courtney Cox will no doubt return to TV."
Why would Matt Roush assume that?
Out of the sox Friends she has had the most success in movies up until this year anyway. She was in the "Scream Trilogy" which made a lot more money than any of the other Friends movies did. Lisa Kudrow has "Analyze This (and That)" and Jennifer Aniston has "Bruce Almighty" but other those two all of the Friends movies have been flops at least as far as starring roles go.
Does Matt assume the other four are going to continue to make box office duds?

I guess we know that Joey and Rachel aren't going to end up together then. :)

Matthew Perry has the whole 9/10 yards.

What about Jennifer Aniston in "The Good Girl." It was quite a good movie. I got tickets to a free screening of that and the theater was packed. But afterwards people were really depressed that she wasn't playing the same type of character she plays in friends. It was kind of sad actually. You're on a show like that for 10 seasons that's all people see and you try and break that character mold and your fans shun you because you didn't play the same character. While not a huge box office success, at least it was a critical success.
I think it's safe to say that they'll all be back in television.
While I'm not gonna watch "Joey," I don't even watch friends :ducks:, I think he realized as someone already said that his movies have not been that great, so take the money and run kind of thing.

when will the madness FINALLY end. This show is on fumes already.

Aniston was in many decent movies, but no blockbusters. The Good Girl was pretty good, but the average Friends fan wouldn't like it much. Joey only has a chance if they are able to get a really good ensemble to support him and the writing supports that ensemble. Look at any good sitcom today. It only works when there are multiple interesting characters to write stories around. Featuring just one character constantly does not work. That is what happened with the Seinfeld cast. It would help immensely if they got another fairly well known actor in the show, that way some of the focus is taken off of Matt. When there is only one star it is hard to spread around the story line. It is better if they were all equally unfamous (like when Friends started) or had a few stars in it. By naming the show "Joey" NBC does not appear to have taken the show in the ensemble direction. It would be better if there was some other theme, like something having to do with the soap opera he is on and naming the show that.

I thought it was great, although I'm a big Gyllenhaal fan anyways.

I suppose "Joey" is a better title than "Friend". :D

As much as I love the Joey character I'm afraid it is destined to fail. Very much akin to my feelings for the American version of Coupling.
As for Melissa George, she was Susan in the original American version of Coupling. I was skeptical before and downright think it is going to suck even more with Rena Sofer replacing her.

They should call it "How You Doin"

Frasier worked, why won't Joey? He is my favorite of the six, so I am hoping it works out well.

Totally agree. Nothing sums up the essence of Joey better than that.
This show has a lot of potential. A lot of different directions they could go. Who knows. NBC may surprise us and not totally screw it up. Maybe they'll have Joey become a tailor so he can fondle the customers.

Hmm ... because Kelsey Grammer's got talent? because Cheers on a bad day was better than the best "Friends" of the last five years, or even longer?
If the creators of 'Joey' can come up with actors and characters like David Hyde Pierce's Niles Crane, they've got a chance. If Matt LeBlanc's the best they can do, they're in real trouble.

They'll definitely need a good supporting cast or else it will crash and burn before it even takes off.
Frasier has had a great cast and great writing.
It'll be interesting to see what the Friends spin-off will be like.

I think that of all the characters, his would have the best chances in a spinoff. Granted, I didn't watch last season, but the only characters I can really stand anymore are Joey and Rachel. And Chandler when he's with Rachel, like in the cheesecake episode. I guess the only characters without major baggage now are Joey and Phoebe, and Phoebe's act got old for me after the first few seasons. I think that she was in her prime as her twin sister on Mad About You.

I still think Gunther out to end up getting Rachel!! Then they could have their own spinoff series...

I like this quote from Matt LeBlanc in EW:quote:
When I'm an old man if people say, "He played Joey and that's all he did," then I can say, "Yeah, that's right, that's all I did. Did it for a long time, it was a very satisfying career; pulled a lot of jokes, got some great stories to tell my grandchildren -- and get off my property."
His suggestion for a name - Where the Hell Is Everybody?
-Tori

His suggestion sounds a lot like an article a Washington Post writer wrote a few years back blasting the Seinfeld spin-off shows and calling for "Where's Jerry" where all the cast but Jerry would make the show, and once an episode someone would say "Where's Jerry". I think it would work if they replaced Jerry. While he was funny, don't get me wrong, there was enough with the other characters to carry it off.
