Commercial Deleter

Now I know what you are thinking, but hear me out. TiVo could have a database, in the program information would give the times where commercials are, then you could delete that block of recording. Yes, I know that sometimes the time it is supposed to come on varies, but again you could tweak it with some minimal personal interaction. If nothing else just have a feature where you can delete part of a recording during specified time periods. This helps when you view something more than once or when you just need to save the really important stuff on your hard drive.

Actually, you don't know what I'm thinking. If you did, you would be running away screaming instead of making this post. Lucky for you then. http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/biggrin.gif

Actually, while there are all sorts of very realistic ways of skiping/blanking/bypassing/editing commercials, the problem is that commercials pay of the TV you watch. The networks need the commercials and would not react well to any attempts to kneecap their source of revenue.

And, since TiVo needs the networks, it's not in TiVo's best interest to pursue anti-commercial technology.

Sorry. It just isn't in the future....

I have to disagree with Zed.

I want to remove commercials and other interuptions from the material
I want to archive to tape. Have stale old comercials along with the
program I saved has no use to me. I could care less if Tivo continues to
record the crap, but I want to be able to manually remove it should I
want to save the program.

Using the VCR to do this, although possible, is stupid when I payed for
a box that can handle digitally removing the segments.

my two cents

I want even more editing features, but mainly I want to remove commercials before I archive to tape.

I do want to point out that you will have to watch the commercials one time anyways. Most likely you will watch them more closely because you are setting the marks for what you want to remove for later.

Disagree with what? Did you actually read my post?

I didn't say that it wasn't something people would want. Just because you want it, doesn't mean that you will get it.

Yeah, you can say that TiVo won't do anything to remove the commercials, but let's face it, a digital VCR (regardless of the service) effectively does that. I haven't seen a TV commercial at home since I got my TiVo last May. Not one. Like it or not, these devices are dramatically reducing the number of commercials we watch, regardless of whether anybody wants to admit that. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle. The television industry will eventually have to find another business model, so there's no real excuse for not putting in features like 30-second skip and the like.

Not big in the logic way, eh?

Seriously, just because PVRs allow you to reduce your commercial intake, it doesn't follow that you might as well destroy the whole commercial television model (which you suggest in your last sentence).

Anyone with a TiVo will still be able to catch any commerical that actually interests them because they do see enough of it. Now, removing a commercial entirly prevents any chance of catching even the good commercials.

Besides, ....

I had a thought the other day that the only way to get networks happy about giving us the ability to auto-delete commercials and bypass channels running infomercials is to give them a better method of promoting their advertisers.

Imagine an advertising model where you can hit a button for commercial opt-out on the tivo and a message would be sent from tivo hq to the content vendor network including your email and the network would then send you directed opt-in prize style exciting directed content and if you hit these web sites, keys are sent to your tivo (and vendor to tivo new customer bounty $) via the nightly schedule update and poof, you no longer see commercials on voyager or the cartoon network for a while.

It may sound funny but the advertising data gathering people would give away a heck of a lot of content to increase the incoming data quality and build new types of directed situations.

If I promise to buy only Tide detergent can I get my voyager commercial free?
