Dead Like Me 7/25 "Reaping Havoc" (Spoilers!)

Nooooooooo!!!!
Damn! This was the espisode where, about halfway through, I decided I was hooked on this show. They really made me care about Betty....
...And then killed her off!! Oh, the humanity! Why oh why???? ;)
Well, any show about death should make the viewer feel loss. So is it art, or did Rebecca Gayheart have better things to do?

I suspect from the fact that she was largely MIA last week, this was not a planned thing.
I see that Kate Warner from 24 is replacing her...which kind of makes hash of the theory that she and Jack are going to be together this season in that show!

Not necessarily - since this is a 13 episode run, from what I understand, filming for this season will have wrapped with plenty of time to go over to the FOX lot to start filming 24.
The earlier thread on DLM linked to a Zap2It article about Mandy Patinkin - in it, they mentioned that he was already doing stage rehearsals for stage performances in Mass.

Yes, but a regular role in a TV show is a different beast from a stage show.
Normally, a TV show contract is exclusive--they can't take a regular role on another show because there's no way of knowing whether, in the future, the schedules will conflict. Actors get exemptions sometimes, but usually when the two shows are in the same production company, and conflicts can be worked out internally. Even if Dead Like Me currently is running 13 episodes during 24's break, there's no way of knowing that this will always be the case (what if they extend the season? What if the second season is this winter?). I doubt very seriously that the Kate Warner actress would have been able to take the Dead Like Me role without having been released from 24 first; it's just not the kind of potentially disruptive situation that Hollywood lawyers would allow to happen.

From the first episode it was mentioned that each reaper has a certain number of souls to release before they are finished. They do not know what that number is. I guess she made her quota and could finally retire. I don't know why this episode didn't mention that.
But that's the show. In real life I don't know why the actress left. Unhappy with her role? Health problems? Family crisis? It's anybody's guess. Maybe this was planned from the beginning. Maybe the producers wanted Kate from the start but she couldn't fit it in her schedule so they hired a temp until Kate was ready to film.

I was under the impression that this wasn't what happened. It wasn't her final soul, in fact technically George popped the soul, not Betty. What I got from it was that Betty just decided to "jump" without knowing where she was going. Note that George said as Betty was following the guy that reapers weren't "allowed to go where they're going."
Also note that Rube left the post it asking where she went, an interesting look into how it is he communicates with his higher up, whoever that is.

Same feeling for me, this will be the episode I look back at as the one that got me fully engrossed into the show, no question.

I doubt they planned for Rebecca to leave - I mean, she was the first character we saw in the pilot, indicating they considered her a pretty important part of the series. I think her mysterious absence last week indicates that she wasn't available for whatever reason - whether it was a personal decision on her part, or some disagreement with the show runners, or something else altogether, I'm not sure.
(I know this probably isn't the case, but one almost wonders if the "voiceover" she had in last weeks episode - the banging on the door of the locker and yelling to be let out - was recorded in real life, that someone locked her in the door of her trailer and recorded the result. :))
I just hope this episode gets posted soon so I can see it. :D

I wouldn't jump to conclusions. It's not uncommon for supporting actors to only be contracted for a certain (less than the total) number of episodes. For instance, there was no sign of Roxy this week, not even a voiceover from inside the morgue. Does this mean that Jasmine Guy will be leaving too? I don't necessarily think so.

You're right. I should have said that if this is her last episode the writers should have made this her last soul.
I was tired and fighting sleep while watching this episode, and I didn't realize it was George's hit.

Isn't it Kate's sister Marie from 24 who's joining Dead Like Me?

You're right!
All those Warner girls look alike. :D
Which still leaves Kate for Jack...

I remember seeing an interview show with all of the characters right after the pilot aired, and was wondering why "Betty" wasn't part of it, they did have "Daisy" on the show though. My initial thought was that Betty was added to the cast at the last minute, but now it looks like she was never intended to be a permanent member of the cast.

Nobody mentioned this but didnt Rebecca Gayheart have legal issues recently. I dont remember exactly but I thought she was involved in some sort of accident where somebody was hurt of killed and she was drunk???
Lots of caveats because I dont remember the exact story but I do remember it was her and not somebody else. Perhaps they wrote her out because well they didnt want film her character in prison.

Here's a link to the best article I can find on the incident: http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,9162,00.html
I don't find any mention that she was drunk. The wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family attempted to establish that she was distracted by a cell phone conversation. That wrongful death lawsuit was settled out of court.
This all occurred in 2001, so while she is still under probation, she is not likely to be sent to jail.
However - and this is a LOT of conjecture on my part - the theme of death and dying may have been hard for her to handle. She might have asked to be written out of the show.
The official word is that the producers decided to go another way with the character, which is standard studio speak for "she no longer works for us, we're not saying why."

The first review I saw of the show said she was only contracted for the 4 episodes. This was before the show aired.

Back to the original subject.
I have started to really like this show, it has kind of crept up on me but I look forward to it. I really did not like the Betty character much so it's no loss to me.
Rube conveyed a lot of feeling in that small note. He has been with her for 75 years or more and his cool image looks like a facade.

back OFF the subject ( Sorry) I thought I read that Kate Warner was not returning to 24 next year. I know she isn't the actress joining DLM but dont think she is going back to 24 either.
Ok... Back on the Subject.
I like this show, I only get Showtime for another 3 weeks then my free period is over, but its the only show I watch on SHO so I'm not going to keep it.

I have read both stories(that she is returning and that she is returning but only for a limited time/brief cameo). I gues we'll have to wait and see.
I just watched all of the eps last night (boy I love Tivo), but was hooked from the pilot. I did think that something looked off about Rebecca, thinking it was the aging process since I have not seen her in some time. I did know that she would be out of the show the minute I saw the voiceover.

Did Becky leave? Will she return? Will Peanut discover the meaning to it all? Does Inigo Montoya show up,,, oh wait, that was his role from another movie. Anyway, these answers and many more await you on future episodes of "Dead Like Me". Unless of course somebody pulls the plug and just leaves us hanging like they did with The Agency.

Just a question for all of you, since I've only watched the first episode and half of the second. Does this show get better in future episodes? I find the acting to be pretty bad and the storylines to be super cheesy. It just doesn't seem like a very good show. I have the rest of episodes on TiVo so I might watch them, I'm just not really enjoying it so far.

Hmm. I don't notice any real improvement, but then again, I thought the acting and storylines were top-notch. The show just might not be your thing.

No, if you don't like the first one then you're probably not gonna like the following ones very much either. I find it mildly entertaining but have to be in just the right mood to want to watch it.
Edit: The entire premise of the show is ridiculous. As if spirits need someone to pull the soul out of a dead or ready to die body and then walk then 50 ft. to where they will be go "on their own". Their added value rates right up there with Vanna White on WOF now that the letters don't even need to be rotated. ;) But it is a somewhat interesting show so I'll continue to watch it. DLM, not WOF.

The premise of EVERY show on television is ridiculous if you think about it.

Yes, you do have to suspend belief on this show. However, I have found it very entertaining. Rube's know-it-all demeanor with George's I-can't-be-dead mood make for a great combination.

To things about this episode:
Betty tells George that her boyfriend got her the ring in 1927, didn't her grave stone read 1899-1926.
Also at the end the picture looks like her, shouldn't the camera show her like everybody else sees her.

Nope, we only get to see how everybody else sees them when they look into a reflection or video camera. Otherwise we always see what the actually looked like.
