Reno 911

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this Comedy Central show yet. It's a spoof of reality cop shows. While it must have looked funny on paper, I found the show to be a dull affair. Maybe it's because I don't watch any of those cop shows that this is spoofing. Maybe no one has mentioned this show because it didn't leave a good impression on anyone else either.
If you did see it, why not put in your 2¢.

Posted by: ClutchBrake

Didn't even make it through the first episode.

Posted by: BlearyEyed

Same as ClutchBrake, I made it through about twenty minutes and then I'd had enough. And usually I'll give even the worst shows a few episodes to get their act together.

Thanks folks. Deleting without bothering now.

Posted by: Fustanella

I caught the first ten minutes and found nothing redeeming. Click.

Posted by: Redleg

While most of it was predictable and not especially original, it had a couple funny moments, enough to let me give it one more chance. Not too promising, though.

Posted by: keefer37

I didn't make it through the episode either.. pretty lame.

Posted by: WinBear

I found my last "Pulp Comics" to be replaced with Reno 911. I watched it, but probably wouldn't make any effort to watch it again.

Posted by: JYoung

I've heard this say advertised as the first Cops parody and a reviewer who said the same thing.
I guess they forgot about this show.

Posted by: Marco

Hello! "Police Squad!" was on in '82.
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0083466

Posted by: JYoung

No,
Police Squad was a comedy featuring cops.
Reno 911 and Bakersfield P.D. are specifically parodying reality based police shows like Cops.

And if you're going to play that card, why not go back to Car 54, Where are You?

Posted by: Marco

Oh. "Cops," not cops.
Bad boys bad boys ... :)

Posted by: tanstaafl

Troops is still my favorite parody.

Posted by: keefer37

Man I haven't seen Troops in several years... very cool parody.

OMG, I'm watching the first episode now.. this is so funny!!

I'm a big fan of "real" cop/crime/detective shows (discovery channel/TLC must love me) and I think that makes it all the more funny.

Good work Comedy Central :)

You're missing an important point.. it's the first Cop show on Comedy Central... "from the people who've never brought you a cop show before!"

I've heard those advertisements. But I also heard at least one advertisement where it was touted as the first "COPS" parody.
Plus the reviewer in the Times referred to it as such.

Posted by: Drewster

They hired my Miata for a gag in one episode. I'm hoping the show makes it long enough for my car to appear on TV! (Look for the cop who wears shorts to move his residence.)

Posted by: Sromkie

This show was just plain dumb. I didn't even make it to the first commercial. Eh... I don't need to watch more TV anyway.

Posted by: Mr. Funny Pants

Did you all see the same episode I saw? I didn't think it looked funny at all from the commercials, but I was rolling when the large African-American female cop maced the guy with the fireworks (he said she looked like Shirley Hemphill from "What's Happening").

"THAT'S what's happenin'." Great stuff.

Posted by: Tori

I used to live in Reno. I think it might actually be a documentary that they tried to repackage for Comedy Central.

Posted by: cwoody222

I actually found it funny. Not hilariously funny but worth 20 minutes a week.

...and yet, they film in Carson, CA. The magic of Hollywood!

Posted by: boywaja

I was flipping channels and saw them blow up the ice cream truck. I thought that was pretty funny.

Put in a low-priority SP for it.

Writing's not so good, but the style is dead-on. They really paid attention to how Cops is shot.

Posted by: choccy

I'm watching this evening's Reno 911 - this show is a hoot.

Don't forget, double points if they're Jewish!

Posted by: HotSlag

Well, add another one who actually likes it. At first I heard it was a wanna-be-SuperTroopers. Then found out it was a Cops parody. It took some time to get used to, especially after I read here that people didn't like it.

But after the 2nd show I saw, I got into it, and thought it was pretty funny. I'm keeping my Season Pass.

Posted by: Donbadabon

Count me in as someone who likes it.

I have friends that tried to watch it, and hated it. All had the same expectations - a comedy should have specific jokes, and punch lines, and a laugh track.

In the 2nd episode, when the black cop told a suspect in the back of his patrol car "Don't make me beat you with your own shoe", I thought it was pretty freaking funny. Others wouldn't, which is the beauty of a show without laugh-tracks. They don't tell us where we should be laughing - they leave it up to us.

It is on my season pass. Hopefully it will catch on.

Posted by: choccy

Laugh tracks suck. I'll laugh if the joke is funny, not just because other people are laughing.

That said, Reno 911 cracks me up :)

Posted by: GDG76

I like it too. The execution ticket episode was the first I saw so I'm setting up a season pass..

Big Mike was hilarious with the hose. The "Father Dowling" line cracked me up too. Their names are great as well...

Well, I saw parts of an episode of this show, and I thought it was pretty well done. It looks almost dead-on like Cops.

The only question I had was whether there really was a need on TV for a parody of a show that is already pretty much self-parody.

Posted by: unoriginal

At first I thought this show sucked, but I gave it a couple of episodes and now I really like it.

Posted by: dd9

It's near the top of my SP list! One of the funniest parody shows I've seen in.........I dunno...........lots o' years.

Posted by: Redleg

We're still watching it... and though my original assessment is mostly still valid, the ratio of predictable-to-original has decreased enough to make it worth 20 minutes. Every episode has delivered at least a couple laugh-out-loud moments, so eh, why not, it's just sitting on TiVo anyway. :)

The actress who plays Deputy Williams did an interview on a local radio station here this morning. She said the show is unscripted. They have a plot outline and scene descriptions to go off of, but the dialog is completely improvised.

Posted by: jwjody

I've watched bits and pieces of the show. My aunt likes it though. There was one episode I thought was kinda funny. They were having a "scavenger hunt" of arrests. And one of them was to arrest someone over 6'. So one group calls the dominoes pizza delivery where the guy is over 6' and tells him there's a $100 tip if he get's there in 10 minutes...Well the cops are waiting for him to come through speeding and pulls him over.

Well, it was funnier watching it.

For those of you who havent seen it, dont take the word of these other guys!! (no offense :P) The show is absolutely HILARIOUS...i'm not really a fan of Cops, and i still LOVE this show.. It has me laughing out loud EVERY SINGLE episode!!!

This and Crank Yankers are the two show I look foward to on Comedy Central ever week.

That was this week's episode. Nice car. They didn't mess it up putting all that stuff in it did they?

Does anyone remember The State, a skit comedy show that played on MTV several years back? It was mostly hilarious, but far too cerebral for MTV, if you can imagine that. Reno 911 has several of the cast members from The State, playing Dangle, Weigel, and Junior. You can also catch several other guys from The State playing other bit parts.

Just got a Tivo a week ago, and we already have 3 Reno 911 episodes recorded :)

Reno 911 has been renewed for a Second Season of 13 episodes.

it is a VERY funny show

Posted by: choccy

Cool!

Posted by: chrisnorton

Got my season pass for it! One of the funniest shows that didn't get any promotion before it aired. But being on Comedy Central, they can show it 20 times a day, so you're bound to catch one of them. Really funny improv/sketch comedy.

Posted by: GDG76

That's awesome that it got renewed! I love this show.

"Spell what you just said so I know I heard it right" - for some reason that cracked me up. y-o-u-a-r-e-g-o-i-n-g-t-o-f-a-g-v-i-l-l-e :)

"That ain't no halfway house. It's just a house halfway between the restaurant and where I live."

"APB my ass"

Posted by: ClutchBrake

This week's episode was another good one. "Sexy Wiegel" was funny. The chemical shower scene had me rolling.

Are you kidding? They promoted it virtually non-stop on their own channel. If you meant promotion outside of that, you're right. But the commercials on Comedy Central were non-stop for a long time prior to its debut.

Am I the only one that almost missed out on the show because of the commercials? It was as if they picked the least funny moments (or didn't air show footage at all) to use for promotion. I thought it looked really unfunny from those commercials. Fortunately, I managed to catch it.

Posted by: Hk45USP

I love this show!! It's very clever and original. The show has received very high ratings and Comedy Central is renewing it for a second season.

Posted by: thedude

I setup a SP after the first episode, this is one of a very few new shows I actually like, or can even stand to watch. It ranges from mildly amusing/weird to laugh out loud hillarious at times The fireworks scene in one of the early episodes was a riot. How bout the dinosaur shadows a few episodes back, I was rolling! The cops are so child-like, and the white trash characters are perfect for the COPS parody.

That said, I thought yesterday's episode was pretty weak. A few laughs, but mostly just.. weird..

Posted by: EchoBravo

No. You're definitely not the only one. Cops are a turnoff. Being barraged with promos for a show is a turnoff. I was very aversed to this before it premiered. Luckily, I sampled and liked it though. It's a great show.

I had the same reaction to Family Guy, which Fox pushed relentlessly for weeks before its post-Super Bore debut.

Posted by: Redleg

I've been pleasantly surprised by this show. I still say the first couple episodes were the weakest, but ever since the show has been getting funnier; some of that is because the characters are developing surprisingly well -- especially Wiegel ("my mom started collecting Beanie Babies after she died"). The wedding episode, the FBI episode, the halfway house, the scavenger hunt... it's really come together quickly. We look forward to this one every week!
