Ok, does anyone else want to admit to watching this last night on Bravo?
It actually wasn't as bad as some of the Fox dating shows I've seen.
The only thing I really don't like is throwing the straight guys in the mix, with them apparently competing for money if they get him to choose them. I like that he has Andra there to help out. :)
and I admit, I assumed the Navy guy was one of the 'pretenders'.

I was about to start another thread and thought I'd look before posting.
Ok, I watched the new gay dating reality series on Bravo. The leading man, James, is gorgeous and well spoken. His girl Andra was an interesting addition and I'm sure she'll be useful in helping him weed out the bad boys. Initially, he meets his 15 suitors all at once and then gets to spend time with them in groups of 5. After that, he gets some one-on-one time with a handful of guys. At the end of the episode, he has to eliminate 3 of the 15 suitors.
The show has a twist, of course. Some of the suitors are straight and trying to stay closeted to win a cash prize. If James picks a gay guy, they win a trip to New Zealand.
Random musings on some of the suitors:
Dan - Despite being one of the most physically beautiful suitors, his overconfidence came across badly and his smile seemed very fake to me.
Sean - Very unusual artistic type. His appearance and actions so far have put me off.
Franklin - Good looking, unusual occupation (wine steward), seems very friendly. He's not pinging on my gaydar very much and his sexual orientation poll on Bravotv.com seems to put him squarely in the middle.
Michael - Another good looking and confident guy. He seems much more sincere to me than Dan, but that much chutzpah all the time would wear thin. His Bravo poll is also unclear on his sexual orientation.
After just one show, there are too many guys to make choices, but my picks right now would be Wes, Rob and Brian H and see how things go with Dan, Franklin and Michael.

I watched along with my wife, and we were trying to pick out the straight from gay men, and honestly, so far, we're 100% wrong. My wife totally thought the one straight guy that was thrown out was gay, and we thought the Navy guy was straight, so it shows how much we know!

I had Brian pegged as straight, but I really thought the Navy guy was, too.
Dan, I have a problem with--something about him just seems *fake*, and I was REALLY surprised he kept him, given the boyfriend in NY factor and the fact that he's looking for a monogamous relationship, and stated that up front. I thought sure Dan was going to be the first guy gone.
Wes & Franklin are my top 2 picks, right now. Both came across well. Sean I'm getting a really weird vibe about.

wow,
i haven't watched the show yet but tivo caught it.
but...i didn't know the het's would get money for fooling the poor homosexual.
so none of the straight ppl in the audience have a problem with gay-for-pay?
a common occurence in porn.
just curious, no ones brought up this angle yet.

I was more worried about Jason's Navy career which I suspect has just been shot out a torpedo tube. He violated the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rule by being listed as Gay on the TV show.
It was one of the better dating shows.

3 friends and I gathered to watch that last night. Honestly we thought Queer Eye (both episodes) was much more entertaining.
BMB was OK. Cheesy production values. The host is annoying. And the "girlfriend"? Can you say co-dependent!? (on both sides) Plus...those hips...she needs the Fab5 to pick her out more flattering dresses!
But...all that said, we still enjoyed it and will, no doubt, watch every episode. All 4 of us were 100% with all 3 people who they revealed. So that made it fun.
I was also worried about Navy guy's career. Guess that's over.
As for Dan, he's listed as an "Actor" and he looks really familiar to me. Anyone else familiar with him???

Update:
Just found info on another board...Dan was on NBC's reality show LOST a few years ago. He's got a website:
http://www.danwells.com/
First Toni from Love Cruise and Paradise Hotel and now Dan. Are they REALLY that desperate to need to recycle constestants already?

Ok, I'm with you on this, but I didn't want to hijack this thread. :)

I *totally* don't get the part about throwing in straight guys... I assume the straight guys know the deal from the start. Do they "act gay" and lead the guy on? That's a pretty damn cruel thing to do if you ask me.

Didn't watch, but that is what I am wondering about. I mean one would think it would be pretty easy for the gay guy to figure out if the person he was hanging out with swings both ways. Of course you gotta wonder, how far would the straight actor be willing to go?
Mean while I thought of a few ways the gay guy can figure out if the person guy really likes guys (aside from trying something on him):
*see if he gets indigestion at the mention of Julia Roberts, if he doesn't he is gay.
*same test substituting Dr.Phil
*Uses the word "thingy" when describing an issue with their car... or to describe TV Remote a sure sign guy is gay

The leading man doesn't know that some of the guys are straight until episode 4, I think. At least one suitor confessed to having previous relationships with women, but didn't further disqualify himself. Dr. Brian made some comments about keeping up the act and that he knew there were other straight guys and was completely fooled himself.

I can't believe no one has talked about the Patsy haired Gordon Elliot meets Robin Leech Aussie hostess. She was horrible! Well maybe she will be so bad that she is good. ;) BTW the main guy is soooo cute. Catch indeed.

I thought about watching it, but I just can't bring myself to do it! Doesn't anyone else think that it's crude and insensitive to throw straight guys into the mix without telling the gay guy doing the choosing? "Here's the deal... You're going to try to win over this guy's affections even though you have no interest in him at all. If you do, you'll get paid good money! Just win him over and dump him later!"
Isn't anyone bothered that James may actually fall for one of those guys, and then besides being told the guy was just pulling his leg, be made to feel embarassed and deceived? I think it sounds horrible!

Yeah.. I think this is a pretty crappy thing to do.. Why didn't they make a "straight" Bachelor type show for gay people?
Based on what I've read here, I assume the TV audience knows which guys are straight.
Posted by: cwoody222
No...the TV audience does not know (yet) who is straight. That's part of the fun...picking out who you think is and seeing if you're right. (so far I'm 0 for 3)
And yes, the basic premise is that some guys are thrown in to act straight. THEY know they're straight and they know there are other straight guys...but they don't know who is who. Their goal is to act gay and get picked and then they win $500,000.
The rest of the guys are gay and think everyone else is gay. If they get picked at the end they "win" the bachelor and get to live happily ever after.
Supposedly in a few episodes the "bachelor" will be let onto the secret that some are not gay...adding the element of him thinking "is this one gay? what about that one?"
I don't believe the intention is to let the viewing audience know who is who until each individual is 'kicked off'.
Is it cruel? Sure. But no more cruel than Joe Millionaire or letting Dave onto Paradise Hotel to suffer with all the much-prettier-than-him people.
Posted by: HiBye
No doubt, what is up with all the cruelty? But i must say it's a bit like watching a train wreck or accident happen... just can't tear your eyes away. Being gay seems to be 'in' now on the TV. Interesting statement about the general publics views on the matter. Inspiring I'd say.

Ya it could get mean. But for what I'm understanding it's all shot on a long weekend/week in Hawaii. How much could you fall in love with someone over a extended weekend while being filmed the whole time. But yes I feel guilty about watching. Would it help if I muted it and FF to the visual parts?? ;)

have you watched some of those other "dating" shows?? Some of those girls bawl their eyes out when a guy they have known for a few days says "so long"...

Ok, that's pathetic.
I think throwing the straight guys in the mix is *wrong*. But James (the 'leading man' as they're calling him) is a catch, no doubt about it.
And the 'hostess', well, I was trying to ignore her. She's awful.
Posted by: woyton
Yes, this show is pretty high in the "ick" factor.
But that said, I may watch the other eps, only because there's nothing else on.
The Hostess? Oh ... my ... god ... kill me now. Jeepers, she's bad.
I just wonder about the Navy guy. I mean, don't ask, don't tell, don't appear on a gay-themed dating tv show.

Which is pretty much why I never watched any of those other "reality" shows.
There's a gay stand-up comic who, when talking about "reality" shows, said "A bunch of beautiful models on an island is NOT reality! Reality is a couple of rednecks shouting at each other in the Home Depot Isle."

Main star speaks out against the "twist". No big spoilers but makes me not want to watch the show.

But the show may even prove divisive among gays—especially when they learn that the leading man himself is still smarting from the experience. “I felt betrayed,” says James, a California human-resources executive, perhaps the first reality star ever to speak a bad word about his own series.

Certainly not surprising. I'd be pretty p*ssed off too. Frankly, I'm surprised the show is being touted as something positive for gay people. The show seems to be set up as a goof. I think the producers really *want* the guy to get fooled and pick the hetero guy.
Posted by: bobcarn
That's exactly what I'm talking about. They're lying to the people on the show. This is not at all like "Survivor" where all the contestants knew that they would have to form alliances and that their teammates may be fooling them (it's all part of the game), or "The Mole", where everyone knew up front. This is cheap sensationalism playing off of people's emotions. That Joe Millionnaire was the same thing. He had to intentionally lie to the women that he was courting! What kind of relationship could you possibly expect when the whole basis of it is built on intentional lies?
They're taking someone and lying to him about the conditions of the show itself, then airing his deception on television. There's no way I could ever consider it anything other than them making him look like a fool!
If they just told him up front that some of the "contestants" may be straight (whether or not they are), it would be entirely different. But they didn't. If they're going to lie to their own contestants and make them look like fools, then I just can't, in good conscience, watch it.
Posted by: myriadian
this was exactly my point with my 'gay for pay' comment earlier.
except there's also the initial deception thrown in where James doesn't know any of them might be straight.
so the straight guys would be getting paid for lying and playing into certain stereotypes.
hm..so this makes them escorts...or hookers....or whores....
so maybe the series is really about how whore'ish some straight guys are for money?
;)
gotta try to put some kind of positive spin on it.
M.
p.s. oh, and of course the producers want james to pick the straight guy, that's the whole potential of the show.
Posted by: sieglinde
Yeah, putting straight people in the show is pretty low.
I still think the show is positive for Gay men because it shows them doing normal things. (Well, if partying and playing like they are in Hawaii is normal.)
Are they all living in that house? Palm Springs is such a weird town. I have lived in California all of my life and only have visited it once.

I just saw the second episode. Two more straight guys got kicked off. No one has caught on yet.
My theory is that the last straight guy gets kicked off next week and then James is told about it.

No real surprises on the orientation of the bootees for me.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
I knew Marc was gay. Jim, I wasn't sure, but was leaning towards straight. Paul, I had no doubts he was straight from the beginning.
