Svr 2000 Harddrive issues

I am a noob to these Tivo upgrade forums. Any help would be wonderful.

My svr 2000 is a 40gig maxtor, 3.x is the software that is on it.

The tivo just randomly freezes and then shuts down. It is now happening about 5 times a day. I must unplug it to get it up and ruinning again. I have read many of these forum posts and I am still not 100% sure what to do. This tivo was a used and gift from my parents. I am a college student so buying a new drive is out of the question unless I have too.

I removed the harddive and ran the maxor diagnostics and the drive check out perfect. The tivo still works some of the time. I saw that some people install virgin images on the old drive. Is this something I should do? I also have read the Hinsdale how-to and did not state how to handle a virgin image if this in fact what needs to be done.

I just want my tivo back to the original state since it has a lifetime subscription.

Thanks for the help!

Virgin images were copies of the software before any shows had been recorded on the TiVo. The experts have since learned how to make a backup of a TiVo image without having the tv shows in the copy. I had a "refurbished Sony TiVo with a 40 gig Maxtor drive in it. Had same trouble as yours. I found the power connector to the drive was sensitive to the touch and would shut down the TiVo. I cut the connector off and soldered one in from an old pc and fixed it. I also found Sony was only using 30 of the 40 gigs on the drive. Using Hinsdales instructions I expanded it out to the full capacity and I had a 42 hour TiVo.

As for the lifetime subscription, it's tied to the serial number of the TiVo. You can mess with the software on the drive all you want or even put someone else software on your TiVo as the serial number is read electronically from the mother board

I just checked the power train, including the cable. All is good to the eye. The connector is very solid. How do i get the virgin images? Then, how do I install then properly? Also I forgot to say that the unit has worked fine for about 2 years.
