DS9 coming back soon?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I thought I heard mention of DS9 hitting TNN (Spike, whatever) this fall. I checked their site and no mention. Nothing on startrek.com either. Anyone know if it's going to be in the rotation somewhere this fall? I watched it at first, then grew tired of it, then watched it again to see how it'd wrap up. I may give it a go one more time and see if I can stick with it.

Last I heard, the series is still in syndication on a lot of UPN stations, as well as some local non-affiliated stations.

If it helps, you can always NetFlix the show now. They're up to Season 4 as of this coming Tuesday, and that should give you time to catch up (They're releasing a season every other month, except for December when they release 6 and 7).

I'm doing the netflix thing, I rent and copy them all in no time.

With the risk of sounding like my parents (old... from the 50s/60s south...), is it just pure racism that what many believe was the strongest of the newer Star Treks is all but impossible to find?

I mean, I love 'em all... So it's no problem seeing Voyager twice a day and TNG twice a day, but damn! I haven't seen Capt. Sisko and the gang since the series finale.

Can't wait 'til the last season comes out on DVD.

I echo your sentiments, Echo. I get Entertainment Weekley magazine and they had a recent article on "Can Star Trek Be Saved?" Here is the hand drawn illustration they used at the start of the article:

I immediately thought "Oh, they leave off the black guy!" Now, as you may have noticed, I'm a white guy. But I do mulitmedia advertising and promotional pieces for work, and am always culturaly sensitive so as not to offend anyone who may view the work. So this leapt out at me. Why would a respectable magazine such as EW have such a glaring ommission? At the very least, someone on their staff should have thought "Maybe we should include ALL captains, or switch out Archer (as the one in need of saving) for Sisko to be more inclusive." But apparently they don't have foresight on their staff.

Now, as for DS9's lack of availability on TV, I don't think that's racism at all. It is the only Trek that is "land based" (not in a moving starship) and far and away the least action-packed. I'm sure programmers opt for the more action oriented series when they purchase syndicated packages.

My $0.02.

DS9 was the best of all the series IMHO.
Sisko got especially good when he shaved his head.
I saw that for the 1st time and thought cool. Hawk is here to kick some Cardassian butt!

Great points IndyJones. You're probably right regarding the action thing. Silly me for thinking programmers are looking for "good" series. Lost my head there for a minute.

Now the EW thing, sheesh... That is bad. Not surprising, however.

I think the glaring omission in EW was simply a result of the fact that DS9 was the least promoted of the Star Trek series. It's certainly the Thinker of the various Star Trek spinoffs, and it's probably not the first of the Treks most people think of. DS9 kind of holds its own niche, though (higher quality writing, less merchandising, etc). I'm OK with that, since it just makes the show that much more special for me.

Come to think of it, the lack of Sisko in the drawing might be a result of the fact that DS9 is a good show, and the other captains listed have had problems lately (Zero TOS coverage, a bad TNG movie in the box office numbers, and a lackluster ending for Voyager.... plus, Enterprise as a whole)

What a beautiful way to put it. I really miss that show and look forward to rediscovering it on Spike.

So, it definitely is coming to Spike?

IIRC, the same thing happened with the initial commercials for Enterprise. All of the previous captians' (Kirk's, Picard's & Janeway's) names were shown and Sisko's was absent. Many fans noticed and complained to Paramount and later versions of that commercial included Sisko.

I recall reading an article back in February, right about the time Trek Uncut debuted on TNN, that TNN/Spike has first option from Paramount to buy the airing rights to both DS9 and Voyager after their current syndication contracts expire.

Considering that Spike's demographic is expected to be the 18-34 male category, I wouldn't be surprised if they skipped DS9 and optioned Voyager.

DS9 will be coming to SPIKE TV in 2004 and Voyager will beam over in 2006. Those are the years the syndication deals run out which is why Spike isn't able to show them before then. But once Spike does start showing them, it will be the only place you will find them playing, just like they way it is with TNG now. I'm not sure if they are trying to get TOS from Sci-Fi, I don't know when that deal expires.

I'm guessing Viacom is trying to get TOS onto Spike, as they have been trying to get a lot of their old product off of other's channles and onto their own channels. 7 Days was produced by Paramount which is why it popped up on TNN recently.

Sci-Fi is owned by Vivendi Universal so I'm sure Viacom would like to have TOS back to themselves. But with the Vivendi fire sale currently going on, Viacom is trying to get Vivendi's cable assets as Sci-Fi has recently become very profitable, due to recent mini-series success and the explosion of StarGate SG-1. USA also just had the biggest debut in basic cable history yesterday with the premire of Peacemakers. Viacom would do anything to get those 2 channels. If that were to happen, you could potentially have all 4 Star Trek series on one channel starting in 2006 and Enterprise would be sure to follow.

uhhhh.... I think that DS9 appeals more to their target demographic than Voyager does. Many of the hardcore Voyager fans are woman, at least until Seven of Nine showed up.......

If TNG is any indication, you can be assured that once DS9 shows up on Spike, your tivo can have the entire series recorded within two weeks.

Just not in the correct order.

Hmm, perhaps I should have suggested they pick up War of the Worlds. I'm still missing 5 eps on my tapes and would prefer to burn new copies to DVD. (Also a Paramount series.)

I think DS9 appeals much more to the 18-34 category, the last few seasons was an ongoing war and had a lot af action. The first 3 seasons were okay, but the last four were IMHO the best seasons of any Star Trek.

It really pisses me off that our local UPN doesn't carry DS9 anymore.

I wholeheartedly agree, the last 4 seasons were great and had some of the best Trek episodes across any of the various spinoffs.

I probably should have clarified that Voyager would have greater appeal to Spike's audience strictly for the T&A factor, though. Spike's programming seems more geared towards that sort of thing.

I definatly agree with the T&A, nothing like Voyager for that...
