Tivo loses gateway when my (linux) computer reboots

When i reboot my computer to Linux, Tivo seems to lose the gateway. When i test the connection it always fails when looking for the gateway. I then go through the TCPIP setup and chose the same settings I had (obtain IP automatically, no DHCP Client) and then run the test again and it connects beautifully. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the double post, and After I posted I realized this is questionable as to even being in the right section (HMO). But I will justify it with the fact that the HMO option was what officially gave us the feature of connecting with Network cards.

Is the Linux/Windows system acting as the gateway for the TiVo box?
If so, then rebooting causes DHCP to go bye-bye. Sure, the TiVo has an address, but the dhcp server (PC) has no clue that it's given out that address and may consider it a spoof. Going through the TCP/IP setup will force TiVo to re-request an IP, fixing the issue.
If your PC isn't acting as the gateway, well, then I have no clue why this would be happening.

i beleive the PC is acting as a gateway. I have my network setup as such...
cable --> 1st PC --> hub --> Tivo & other PCs.
The 1st PC is a dual boot windows and linux computer. now in this situation I am assuming that the 1st PC has to act as a gateway correct? Anyways when I boot into windows TIVO connects no problem. When I boot to Linux it gets confused and I have to go through the setup I just mentioned.
Is there anyway to get Tivo to go through this setup on its own periodically?

Yes, your PC is acting as the gateway. No, there is no way to make TiVo go through setup by itself. You may want to try setting a static IP on the TiVo -- that could solve the problem.
Alternately, go out and buy a $40 Linksys firewall/router and let it serve as the gateway for the PC, DHCP server, etc. Then you won't have to worry about it, won't need to leave the PC on for the TiVo to have net access, etc.
It would change your diagram to this:
code:
cable ----> linksys ----> PC
\---> TiVo
The linksys replaces the hub.

A guy at work suggested a static IP too. I will try that (as soon as my wife stops watching TV. She is starting to get irritated with me hogging both the TV and Computer troubleshooting all this!)
I am wiating on the router cause I want to switch to wireless but that means new Network cards at the same time.
Unless...
Are there wireless routers that also have at least one wire output too? then I could do
Wireless router --> wired hub--> rest of computers
That would work right? Then i could get the router not and the rest later as I get the money/inclination.

Oh and thanks for your help.

Most wireless routers have 4+ ethernet jacks as well as the wireless connections, so you could use it for the PC as well as the TiVo.

Making tivo have a static IP worked. Now my only problem is getting windows to have the same settingss as linux. but that should be no problem.
