Thumbs Up During Commercials (iPreview question)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, now every once in a while I see a little "press (thumbs up symbol)" during a commercial. Now I know that this gives me options to record the program that the commercial is about. I know this is in the manual and all. So here is my question: what network have you seen it on?

I've only seen it on my local NBC affiliate. I've had TiVo for about 2 weeks but I've only seen it there. For "The Restraunt", "Who Wants To Marry My Dad", and some other reality show that I can't remember.

Do many networks take advantage of this? Just wondering what you've all seen. It seems like something very handy to me, I'd think more networks would use it.

I have seen it for NBC and Discovery -- and possibly Showtime. These are also major users of the Showcases and in some instances investors in TiVo Inc.

They also pay for the privilege. As more people use TiVo and more networks see the benefit of targeting the TiVo user you will, I am sure, see more.

I figured that it was a pay privilage thing, but I still think that it would be worth it often. There may not be a ton of TiVo users (relative to the total population) but word of mouth can be powerful. Too bad it's so hard (near impossible) to figure out exactly how much something like the iPreview chances your ratings.

Only on NBC.. I don't have showtime, so I don't know how often they do it.. I have Discovery, but I've never seen it used there.

I've seen it (very rarely) on Showtime and also for some PBS previews in the Showcases and whatnot. (The rarity of my Showtime sightings may have to do with the fact that Showtime is ad-free except for inter-show stuff, and I don't often sit around watching that.)

Hmmm, targeting the TiVo user? I wonder why? So we'll watch the commercials? ;) Or will it be product placement that is the payoff to them? Or simply higher ratings?

I rarely watch live TV anymore and I've never seen the iPreview thumbs up during replay. Does it only show up during live play?

No - I've seen this on recordings, although I've never pushed it during a recording to see if it still works! ;)

yes, it does work during recordings as well. I love it, it's a very easy way to record shows! wish more networks offered it

I've gotten them on HBO as well.

I used to see it on Stars or one of those "other" premium channels. But I am pretty sure it was Stars.

It shows up on recordings, but less often. That's because, if there's an iPreview on a show airing today for a show airing on Saturday, and you don't watch the show until next Tuesday, the iPreview is automatically hidden. If you don't watch stuff for a while, you may almost never see them.

One interesting tidbit.
Based on a recent experience I think that the iPreview hiding only compares the month/day (but not the year)

2 days ago I finally got around to watching a NBC show from a year ago. While fast forwarding through the commercials I noticed an iPreview icon pop up. Because I was surprised to see it I rewound to the commercial (it was for a new episode of Ed on 9/1?/02) and hit thumbs up to see what would happen, the tivo found a showing (obviously not the one the commercial was for) and offered to record it.

Unfortunately I since deleted the program, so I can't play it after the show date and see if the iPreview went away.

Of course this is a basically useless piece of knowledge...
