2003 Men's Gymnastics Nationals (and upcoming World's)

What do ya'll think our chances are with Worlds coming up?
That Jason kid... my gosh, what a tank! He scares the devil out of me when he lands on that knee though. :( Also what a whimpy vault choice... can't believe he got a 9.3 on that. His rings routine was freaking awesome though... they only gave him a 9.75 or something... pretty good... but heck I was thinking it might be 9.9+
The twins look fine... the one guy didn't really impress me as much as everyone else seems to be impressed. Those two guys (forget their names) that are returning National/Olympic team members are fine, but again nothing special. It worries me when a guy can fall off his apparatus like Blake (I think that's his name) did, and still be in 3rd position overall going into the 2nd day!
So what are ya'lls thoughts? My guess is we'll be fighting for 3rd at best. The women on the other hand, I think will have a shot at numero uno. Oh, also the worlds are in the US this year... so maybe the men will get a boost up that way.

Wow, another gymnastics fan! yay! I have to admit (shamefully) that I didn't pay 100% attention to my recording of the men's nationals. I'm a gymnastics fan, but I actually find a lot of the men's events kind of painful to watch. (I think it's because it looks like their muscles are actually going to pop through their skin. And then there are the upper arms taking a beating on the parallel bars... yeowch!) I do agree with you that the team isn't extremely strong on an international stage. I think they're getting stronger, but they will probably be fighting for medals at world's. Then again, it's been a while since I've seen the non-US men's teams, so who knows.
I definitely agree that the women are in fantastic shape. Watching the US women in gymnastics reminds me a lot of watching US women in figure skating these days - really really deep field, and lots of young people who will be absolutely phenomenal in a year or two. I think they have a great chance at a team medal (perhaps gold) an all around medal (maybe gold) and plenty of apparatus medals. I can't wait for worlds. Truthfully, I don't care who wins the medals... I just know that it's going to be an outstanding competition, and we'll see some mind-blowing gymnastics, all around.
When are worlds anyway? Haven't checked my wish lists lately...

(oh, and congrats on one huge YAMM! :D)

I am not much of a fan of men's gymnastics...I usually watch it on fast forward and only watch the vault and the high bar in real time. :)
But I am a huge women's gymnastics fan! They are looking really good this year. I'm really glad that Hollie Vise and Carly Patterson were both able to make the team, I've been fans of theirs for a couple of years. It's too bad, though, that Nastia Liukin is not age eligible for Worlds or Olympics, because I love her style and lines.
Worlds start on August 15th. Women's gymnastics is on 8/17 (team prelims), 8/20 (team finals), 8/22 (all around finals), 8/23 (vault and bars finals), and 8/24 (beam and floor finals). I imagine the women's televised coverage will be fairly close to that, as they covered Nationals right away for them.
Posted by: cello
vault and high bar are also my favorite men's events.
thanks for the dates!

I have never appreciated my TiVo more than when gymnastics is on. I used to always miss the showings, but my auto record wish list catches everything. :)
I think the men do have a chance this year. Their biggest problem is consistency. They have the skills, but then choke during the big competitions. If they create the team correctly and get strong guys on each event, I think they can place high.
Posted by: JohnJr
Yup... I love my FRO AR WL for gymnastics too, Amy! Cello, thanks for the YAMMage :) I posted my thoughts on day one of the women's nationals back here but ya'll left me high and dry on that one. :D
I'd have to say for the men rings is my favorite event and for the women the bar. The men (and the women) are really starting to do some crazy vaults too.
Am I wrong in thinking that there are not more physically fit athletes than men/women gymnasts? All around, I guess I mean. Sure you have to be fit in certain ways to say play football, or soccer, or weight lift, or whatever, but I love gymnastics for its pure simplicity. Gymnast and apparatus. Just too cool.
Which reminds me of something that I thought was pretty surprising. After the one guy (I really should go find their names) did his horse routine, I think he was weasing and breathing harder than I have ever seen a gymnast. He was wiped out. He's one of the retuning national team members and it just makes me think he may have stuck it out too long.
Wish I was closer to Anaheim, CA as I would love to check out some events live! But as it is, TiVo should pick it all up for me :)

Yes, gymnasts are unbelievably fit. The workouts they do to prepare are just unbelievable. I really like that there's an obvious trend for women gymnasts nowadays to have curves and body mass. It hasn't always been this way. They certainly look a lot healthier than the girls did a decade or so ago, on average. It makes me feel a lot better about being a fan of their sport.
My most and least favorite women's event is beam. I often have to watch between my fingers because it's so dangerous. But after a good routine, I'll rewind and watch it over and over. I can barely walk in a straight line...
Tivo has totally changed the way I watch gymnastics. Instant replay and slow motion are my friends. :)
okay JohnJr, I'm going back to read your thougts on the women's nationals now. Must not have been paying too much attention to the forums back then.

Oops...sorry :) I guess I missed that thread.
Wonder if they'll show any tv coverage of the Pan Ams. The women did great there.

OMG, I didn't expect to find anyone discussing gymnastics on the Tivo forums! I was completely shocked when I opened up the TV Talk section and saw a thread in here about my favorite sport. Glad to hear there are other fans!
I completely agree with all of you -- I think the men's team will be fighting for medals. We've come a long way since the last quadrennium, but we're still nowhere near the talent level of the Chinese and Russian men, IMHO.
However, I'm more of a fan of women's artistic gymnastics, and I think we have an incredible shot at winning team gold. I also think if our top gymnasts hit, we're also in contention to win the AA gold. Who do you think will compete in the AA for the US? I'd love to see Carly and Tasha, but I think their injuries have been hampering them lately, and Courtney Kupets is so consistent!
11 more days till I leave for Anaheim!!! I'm SO excited!!!

I heard on other gymnastics boards that none of the major networks were planning to show Pan Ams. The only one that's showing them is some Canadian station -- if you're lucky to be living up North near the border, you may be able to catch some action.
Perhaps with the recent success, NBC or ESPN might change their minds?
P.S. Did you hear that Chellsie Memmel just made Worlds alternate?

What channel was this on? I have a wishlist for sports/gymnastics, auto record and it didn't get it. And there are no upcoming episode in my wishlist.
Posted by: JohnJr
Gene,
I believe it was on NBC, and they don't run repeats like some of the other cable networks do. :( You might check your recording history to see if there was some other recording that took priority over your wishlist. It was on either last Saturday or Sunday.

I don't remeber what channel the men's nationals was on. Maybe there was a conflict with another program that was higher up on your SP list? I usually check all my wishlists (AR or not) once a week, so I don't miss anything.
Worlds hasn't been picked up by my tivo yet, and I just did a call in this morning. I suspect it should be appearing soon.
Posted by: cello
hehe. This prompted me to look at the current sports categories for wishlists. The last time I did that, the only one I was interested in was gymnastics... I tried a skating one, but back then it didn't differentiate between figure skating, skateboarding, and in-line skating. (There is a figure skating WL available now, yay!). But in case you guys are interested, you can set up a WL for arm wrestling, Ringuette (what is that?), Roller Derby and Sports Non-Event (to balance out the Sports Event option?) This makes me laugh. :D

Has the loss of a lot of mens gymnastic programs at colleges around the country hurt our chances in international competitions?

It doesn't seem to. Did you notice that a lot of the guys are continuing past college? There were a bunch of them with Chevron logos on their shirts.

Do you have info on the whole team?

The women's team was picked in early July. It consists of Courtney Kupets, Hollie Vise, Tasha Schwikert, Carly Patterson, Annia Hatch, and Ashley Postell. Terin Humphrey and Samantha Sheehan were the alternates, but as Chippy mentions, Chellsie Memmel has replaced Sheehan.

The Team Chevron guys are the guys that train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. They haven't necessarily even gone to college yet. :)
Posted by: JohnJr
It's funny that the Olympic Training Center is just 60 miles away from me and I have yet to see an event live. You would figure that there would be some relatively large competition in Colorado Springs every year, but as far as I know, there is not. :(

Thanks for the clarification. I thought those were guys done college, and were working at Chevron who allows them to train instead of work. Tells you how much I know... :)

Well, according to www.intlgymnast.com, the Reese's Cup is supposed to be held in November of this year in Colorado Springs. It's not necessarily a real competition, but it's always fun to see the gymnasts show some personality, and they usually get a pretty good lineup. I couldn't find any info about it on the USA Gymnastics website, though, so I don't know if IG's listing is accurate. You might want to be on the lookout for it.
Posted by: JohnJr
Well cool! Actually it does sound like a real event to me... it's not one of those rock and roll gymnastics events things is it? Thank you very much for the heads-up!
But going to that sight made me really realize how mad I am that we missed the Pan American games! How could someone not show that with Worlds just weeks away and like a bazillion channels out there?!

I think you might be confusing the Reese's Cup with the Visa American Cup! The Reese's Cup is not a legitimate competition, with FIG-imposed rules and athletes following the Code of Points. That's actually the American Cup.
Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you.
The Reese's Cup is a more relaxed atmosphere, with gymnasts performing to fun routines, acting, and dancing. I guess it is more like those rock and roll gymnastics events you mentioned, but it's still fun. They usually get fairly well-known gymnasts, too, so the calibre of gymnastics performed is still high. For example, a couple years ago, the performers included Shannon Miller, Svetlana Khorkina, John Roethlisberger, Alexei Nemov, Paul Hamm, and Tasha Schwikert, among others.
So even though it's not a legitimate competition, like the US Classic or Nationals, it's still a great opportunity to watch gymnastics live. And let me tell you, the tricks look 10 times cooler in person than on a TV screen. :)
BTW, I agree with you about the major networks (particularly NBC, shame on them) not airing Pan Ams. It's not even like there's a conflict of schedule or anything!

My TiVo is showing that the Artistic Gymnastics are this weekend. I don't see any of the regular gymnastics showing up yet. Is that what ya'll are seeing?
There are theoretically two shows on Sunday. One of them for 2 hours in the afternoon and one for like one hour in prime-time (or close to it). Does anyone know if that hour in prime-time is just a recap of the afternoon show?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, and please no spoilers in this thread if you know the results of any of the Worlds competition. Thank you!
-John
Posted by: cello
I have the same as you. I'm recording it all, and crossing my fingers.
Posted by: laria
I have been watching the realtime results all week so I know what happens, but I won't post anything yet I guess. :)
Saturday is supposed to be the women's team competition, Sunday is supposed to be men's competition (not clear if it's team or all-around or both), and Monday is supposed to be women's all around. My Tivo isn't showing more than one thing on Sunday, so I don't knwo if it's a recap or not.
Posted by: JohnJr
Thanks for not posting any spoilers here. Feel free to start a new thread on the world's with spoilers if you like, however!
That's one good thing about how little press gymnastics gets. It lets me be surprised even when the event happened weeks/months ago. :)

Hah. They told the results of the '96 women's all around competition on the national news before they aired the competition - on the same network! I was fuming mad. I feel I was truly robbed of that full experience. Not only was that a close competition full of excellent athletes, but it was the famous ending... I think it was around then that I stopped watching the news on TV. :)

LOL smak! Yes this years World Championships were held in Anaheim. Dunno if it's at this "pond" though.
Folks, I was thinking this was the rhythmic championships this weekend, but indeed this is the real stuff! I've modified my wishlist so that it gets all three events. (I had a conflict with the prime-time showing.)

I need to be cleaning my house right now, but I can't resist watching the men's floor exercise. I just hope they give air time to non-US athletes...

I couldn't agree more. I hate it when they focus on the US atheletes when it is clear that other atheletes are performing better. They give us one token event from the better athelete and call it good, while showing every event for even the poorest US athelete.

Oh... but this shouldn't be a problem tomorrow with the women's competition! :D
I'm going to open a spoilers thread where we can discuss results of todays and tomorrows events.
