I am about to buy my first TiVo box, but I am quite confused as I see many different manufacturers (Philips, Sony, Thomson, Hughes...)

Is TiVo also manufacturing the Box itself?
What are the differences between the manufacturers and which do you advise me to choose?

There ard currently only two actual manufacturers:

Solectron - Contract manufacturer for non-Sony boxes
Sony

The Sony box is based on TiVo's reference design, but with some tweaks (such as a second S-Video out) and is made by them in Japan.

If you're getting a DirecTiVo, there's not much difference among the brands, though the RCA seems to be a somewhat updated design, soon to be offered by Hughes as well. For standalones, your choice is TiVo-branded (Solectron) or Sony.

There are three additionally announced boxes containing TiVo: Toshiba SD-H400 DVD player with TiVo and Pioneer DVR-57H and DVR-810H DVD recorder with TiVo.

Not sure who builds.
