Maxtor Ultra Series Questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm about to upgrade with a Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM. It's the Ultra ATA/133 Series with an 8MB Cache. The box also says it has an Ultra Quiet FDB Motor.

So my questions are:

Do I need to run the MaxBlast Setup Software?

Should I run the AMSET utility? I think not seeing as how this drive is not listed as one of the drives this utility can be run on (based on their website) but I've seen other posts in these forums that others have ran it on their 120GB drives. Maybe with it having the Ultra Quiet FDB Motor, it's not needed...

Thanks,

David...

FDB motor reduces rotational noise. Amset reduces head seeking noise. Yes, you can run amset on the drive.

MaxBlast has nothing to do with TiVo, and I wouldn't use it even for PC.

I installed a 120 maxtor 8mb cache drive as my "A" drive, didnt use the maxblast software.

How was the noise?

Run AMSET. I just installed the same drive today and the head seeks are loud. THe motor is whisper quiet, however. I have to pull my drive back out and run AMSET now...

Folks,

The Amset utility does not work on the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 (Ultra series) drives. How do I know. First, I tried running it on my 160GB drive. Second, I checked with Maxtor technical support and they said it did not work and there were no plans for it to do so.

My bad, I have the:
-DiamondMax Plus 40 UDMA/100

Found the amset util here.

BTW, this was the drive Office Depot had on sale for $69 after rebate a couple weeks ago.

Of course amset works on the drive. I have that 160GB drive in my PC. Ran amset /quiet and then ran chkdsk -- whisper quiet. Ran amset /fast and then ran chkdsk -- I could hear the seeking noise. Most tech support people I have encountered are not that useful.
