What experience has anyone had with using a "DVD-R" for "recording to tape?" I understand that the high dollar Panasonic will record and the disk can be played on any DVD player, but the lesser expensive models can only be played back on the DVD they were recorded on. ???
And....does it still take all that extra time to "record" to the DVD, like it does on the VCR, or does the DVD work like a CD in the computer.

Since you are recording using the analog output it will still take just as long to make the DVD. Digital extraction is not allowed on this forum.
There many are lively discussions about what format is more compatible with playback on DVD players. +R/+RW vs -R/-RW It has been said that newer DVD players seem to be able to play almost anything that is thrown at it. Older models do better with the '-' formats. And, the Record once format may be better than the ReWriteable formayt.

With DVD-R, you have to "finalize" the disc before it will play on other DVD players. It isn't a case of low-end vs. high-end.
I use a DVD+RW recorder to dump from TiVo and it works very well.
