Bad Drive? Need help...

Help! Please!!!
My Tivio Series2 unit is making some bad, bad noises. I am trying to get into the unit to diagnose further, but three young kids pulling at my shirt is making it really hard!!! :D
Sounds to me like bad drive block: Chick, Chick-chick, Chick, Chick----Chick,Chick. Picture freezes (in fact, everything freezes) ostensibly because it's waiting for the drive read to come back.
I don't need the world. I just need to know if there are any drive scan/fix utils for the Tivos.
I could always back up the drive, format it to be a Windows drive, run a surface scan, then restore the Tivo image, but what a hassle!
Are there drive vendor utils that may help me out, too?
(Say, last-minute thought... Doesn't the MFSTools2 software do a surface scan for me, if I let it? Would a backup/restore effort do it for me?)
Looking for help-
