Best Way to Sell a TiVo?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What's the best way to sell a series one TiVo? Ebay? Classified ads in the paper? etc...

I have a D TiVo coming next weekend so that means I'll have to sell one of my SA Series 1 TiVos. The one I'm thinking of has 101 hours of storage and I want to make sure I get the most for it that I can.

Thanks for any feedback on this. I'd like to be prepared so I can sell it as soon as everything is hooked up next week.

Check Ebay for completed auctions and then you can see what people are getting for units similar to yours. I am in a similar situation. We got a DirecTivo a couple of months ago and I finally got around to listing my Series 1 Philips unit on Ebay this weekend.

Do you mind me asking how it's doing? I sell a lot of things on Ebay, but I just want to be sure that I do well on this because my DH is not totally thrilled with all the money we've spent this weekend adding to my TiVo addiction ;)

Search eBay for TiVos and then click the "completed auctions" link. That'll show you what items actually sell for, which is very hard to judge from ongoing auctions, because prices frequently jump in the last few hours (and even minutes) of an auction.

Try this

Sorry to be dense, but I don't see the "completed auctions" link. Can you give me a clue where to look?

There is a check-box on the left side of the search results page, right below the field where your search term is entered. You can also find completed auctions by going to "Search" at the top of any eBay page, then clicking the "advanced options" tab and selecting the completed items check-box.

Thanks Redleg! I finally did see it. It seems to depend on how you search. Sometimes it is visible and sometimes it isn't.

It is still too early to tell where it will end up (5 days left), but right now it is at $137. Most seem to end up at around $400 - $450. Most of the bidding seems to come in the last few hours.

400 - 450 is pretty good. My DH may have sold the TiVo in question today at work for about $250. We'll know tomorrow.

It's hard to search for TiVo and have a good idea of what they go for because there are so many different models and hard drive configurations...but I'll keep digging through them and if this doesn't pan out then I'll be listing mine on Ebay next week :)

Thanks for your help!

Whether or not your TiVo has a lifetime subscription plays a very important role in its selling price. If your 101 hour TiVo has a lifetime subscription, $250 is a *steal*. If not, it might be worth taking that price to avoid the hassle of listing it on eBay.

I did the same thing - bought 2 directivos and sold 2 standalones. I was prepared to sell them on ebay. Checked the recently completed auctions, guessed I could get at least $400 each as they had lifetime service and 107 hours each. Then I offered them to some friends at $350 each and they snapped them up. I figured it was worth the $100 difference not to have to hassle with ebay and shipping.

That's the least hassle - offer to friends but ebay is there for you if that doesn't pan out. Good luck!

Get a reluctant friend to "adopt" it for a 30 day trial. By the end, they'll be happy to meet your price, whatever you say it is!

I should have pointed out the $400 - $450 is for an upgraded unit with a lifetime subscription.

DH did not end up selling it at work. So I solved the problem myself...called up my mother and told her she just MUST take this TiVo off my hands so she can keep up with all of her reality TV shows :D

Turns out she was just thinking the other day that she needs to buy a TiVo so she can stop having my step father record shows for her on video when she has a time conflict :D

So my TiVo is on it's way to her as soon as my Direct TiVo gets here and I assure that all is working well.

After I've used the Direct TiVo for a while I'll most likely get my Step Father to get DirectTV (he's been thinking on this for awhile) and with it, a Direct TiVo for their main TV.

My mother was very open to this. It's only taken 3 years of me raving about TiVo to bring this around...not to mention all the bitching we did, the 2 weeks we stayed with them this summer, about them not having TiVo and forcing us to watch TV shows at a set time or missing them. :D

I am determined to add to the TiVolution one person at a time!

The TiVo I bought my parents for their anniversary that first year is possibly the best thing I ever did for someone--they were so skeptical, but now, man. My *mom* is the one complaining that the resort they're staying at doesn't have a TiVo. She tells me that she simply doesn't watch TV when she's not at home--or at my house. She can't stand it. :)

They converted themselves to a two-combo house during the $80 combo days. Now they have his and hers, just like me. I am so proud! :)

Check the last section of my sig.

As much as I had raved about TiVo, she was still reluctant to accept it as a Christmas present. It was "technology" (gasp!), and on top of that, she had to cancel her Dish Network subscription, and learn a new satellite TV system! Ack!

It took less than two weeks for her to drink the Kool-Aid.

I know what you're talking about, Lori! Last summer, Mom and her partner went on a vacation, and were frustrated with the beach-house's woefully inadequate, primitive television, with it's lack of "be-boop, be-boop"-ability.

Your mother will love TiVo. That's the best present I've ever given my mother, and I'm sure *your* mother will shortly feel the same way.

I am pretty happy. It ended up at $535. I think the Turbonet and TivoWeb put it over the top.

I bid on that! I'm your first bid (pari-mutuel). Obviously, I just bid to placehold, but I was tuned in close to the end when it got out of my range.
