What is the true TiVo HD Upgrade Limit?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently bought a TCD240040 (Series 2, 40hr, SA) box
and want to max out the storage capacity with new
drives. I'm deciding how much HD to buy.
I read a forum statement that the TiVo OS limits
recognition of HD capacity at 137 gb. On the other
hand, there are vendors selling twin 160 gb upgrade
kits, claiming 311 or 315 hr capacity.
Does anyone know the TRUE limit to adding HD capacity
to a TiVo box? Are the vendors applying a kernal patch
with their upgrades? If so, is such a patch available for
those of us doing our own?
Thanks!
(Love my TiVo! Third one I've bought!)

The limit for your TiVo is 2 160Gb drives of which only the first 137Gb will be utilised by the TiVo (274Gb in total).
The large drive sets you've seen are for Series 1 TiVoes and do use a modified kernel.
No such kernel has yet been compiled for Series 2 TiVoes and breaking the lock-down on Series 2's is much harder than for Series 1 machines, so you may have to wait for an official kernel that supports large drives.
See the 1660Gb thread in the Underground (page 5 onwards) for the guide to making your own large drive for a Series 1 TiVo.
