Some help for a newbie?

I'm switching over from UTV today and have a few questions. I did a search on these and can't find specific answers. If these have been asked before, sorry for asking again.

I want to take the 120G WD out of my UTV and put it into the new DTivo. Does it really matter if I just add it or should I try and make it drive a and make the 40G drive b?

Is the OEM remote that bad that everyone talks about a replacment universal?

I've read that the USB ports are not activated, but, are they powered? Can they be used to power a laptop cooler that can be placed under the unit? UTV USB ports do nothing but can power these fans.

It seems I have a choice of a Phillips or Hughes box. Is it a coin toss?

Any help/opinions with this is really appreciated. I hope my Tivo experience surpasses my satisfaction with UTV. TIA.

It's a lot more complicated to do the A - B switch that you propose, and it probably wont help much. Just be sure to fully test the drive first - adding an old drive to a TiVo isn't always the best idea.

The remote will act as a univeral for most TVs and stereo receivers.

I think the USB ports are powered in DTiVo boxes.

Definite coin toss on the brands - basically identical (same factory) but for the access door on the Hughes and the branding.

Thanks Michael,

The drive is only a month or two old. I just didn't know if there was any advantage to the larger/faster drive being the A drive. So your recommendationis to just add the 120G as Drive B?

Actually, as the TiVo is brand new, there's no reason not to make the 120 the A drive (the problem is the time it takes to copy a drive full of recordings, on a new TiVo, you won't want to copy recordings).

Not sure it's worth adding 40 to 120, though, personally I prefer to stick with just one drive.
