The Amazing Race 4 Finale-- SPOILERS!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: David Platt

Can't believe there's not a thread about this yet. So what does everybody think? Jeff and David really screwed the pooch on this one, though I can't say I'm sad to see them lose. I guess Chip & Reichen winning is okay, but I was really rooting for Jon & Kelly.

Best shot of the night: Jeff & David talking about how they don't make mistakes, followed by a 5-second clip of them having trouble closing the back door of their SUV.

Posted by: TiVoLance

Best ending EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wooooo Hoooooo! Seeing all the extra things Chip and Reichen did to win (other terminal, asking properly for directions, asking for seating up front) they deserved to win. That is if they didn't die in a car wreak from Chip's driving. lol funniest comment was Reichen saying sky diving didn't bother him as much as Chip's driving. It was cool to see everyone at the end.

Posted by: Todd

Good episode. Not exactly thrilled with the winners, but they played everything right down the homestretch.

I'm not happy with the winners. Not because they are gay, I could care less, but because they (especially Chip) do not seem like very nice people...what's with not even waving to Jon and Kelly in the airport...shows poor sportsmanship.

I really wanted Jon and Kelly to win. :(

I have to admit you are correct about that..they were smart players. I just wish they were not such poor sports at times.

Posted by: TiVo'Brien

Kind of glad Chip and Reichen won, but what I'm *really* happy about was that John and Kelly didn't win (although they played the stadium puzzle very intelligently and earned more respect from me).

Poor goats outsmarted themselves. Oh well. It was a gamble that could have paid off. I figure they were about 12 hours behind at the end. :(

Hooray for the little Japanese girl who helped John & Kelly at the airport! She was great! Now THAT'S customer service!

I was happy the producers threw in a real puzzle at the end. I wish they had more through out the game.

So Jon and Kelly could make immature comments to them? Forget it. C&R did the right thing by staying focused on the game and not letting the two middle schoolers distract them.

Exactly. Jon and Kelly already admitted they do stuff like that to mess with the other teams, especially C&R.

Yeah Chip is a jerk, but they both competed hard the whole time and deserved to win as much as any of the teams.

Posted by: laria

I liked how it was mostly a bike race to the finish this time too instead of a foot race.

Posted by: esperantisto

For all of you out there except TiVoLance (and a few other quiet C&R fans):

I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!!!

hehehehehe

BTW - JoKe fan saying the Chipsters aren't nice: excuse me pot, kettle is on the phone!

Posted by: Avian

I was so sick of them playing the Gay card, I totally wanted J and K to win.

Posted by: TheDewAddict

Ergh! I really didn't want C&R to win. I wasnt fond of them before, but a few weeks ago when one of them didn't feel he should have to pay the taxi driver because he didn't speak English, it just showed what an ignorant moron he is. He wants his homosexuality to be accepted in the USA, which is all fine and good, but he's intolerant of other people, even in their own country. What an ass.

I didn't much care about the goats, but I really wanted Jon & Kelly to win. They played the last leg pretty well (except for the mixup at the airport), but I'll admit C&R played the last leg perfectly.

Posted by: dwells

Great, great episode. I love it when all the past contestants come back to cheer on the winners............

It will be an absolute crying shame if they don't continue the Amazing Race. There is no better television than what we saw tonight......

Dennis

Posted by: esperantisto

I think the cab thing was due to them asking first if the cabbie spoke english. If you are told that you are paying for an english-speaking cabbie and you don't get one you may feel like you don't have to pay.

Anyway... back to the gloat!

I can't believe they ended the race in Phoenix! I work about 4 miles away from Papago Park. In fact, my office Christmas Picnic was right next door at the Phoenix Zoo. It really isa beautiful area, and what better way to end the race than during an Arizona sunset!

Also, i think C&R did the right thing by not talking to J&K. Those two were the most immature jerks in the whole race. They turned my against them with all the "Millie the Mole" crap. Like someone else said, they admitted that they try to psych out the other teams, so why should C&R have put themselves into that situation? I'm just glad they didn't win.

Although I really wish the clowns could have won. Talk about a team with class.

Ahem... Don't you mean Arizona sunrise? :)

I really wanted Jon & Kelly to win, but C&R played the better game, as irritating as they were. The guy at the Tokyo airport who kept J&K from getting on the plane--- as they watched C&R get on in front of them--- ticked me off. If I were Jon at that moment, I probably would have pointed out the camera to the guy, and asked him to tell all of America how United Airlines was treating its customers. That might have brought him around (but probably against the rules [but who cares at that point? That was the moment they lost the race])

Posted by: Uther

[edit]
For those wondering, my response here was to the offensive troll post that got deleted.

Posted by: brott

Perhaps it was the team that won, I don't know, but this episode lacked the punch that the ending of the last two seasons had. C&R where way ahead pretty much the whole time and yeah, it was smart on their part, but it didn't make for much excitement. Oh well. And I must agree with the other poster. They way, way, way overused the Gay Card. Who cares if their gay?

Posted by: Dromomaniac

I wasn't rooting for any of the teams, but was disappointed one team had to make such a costly error. I mean, come on! Flying to Sydney was like saying, "You know, we could get a flight here in Seattle, but all our options will be in L.A." Doh!

I too thought this last episode lacked a good suspenseful end. Really, after Jon & Kelly missed the UA flight, did anyone really doubt that Chip & Reichen would stay in the lead? Certainly after they left the stadium, it was clear who would end up winning.

Kind of bummed me out to see all the teams caught up again at the start of this episode. Especially after Phil said the point of last week's episode was to get "in position" for the final leg. Really, you can do just fine being second to last through the whole race.

I did like that last stadium clue, though. Almost all the other "clues" have just been directions. If (hopefully!) TAR returns, I'd like to see more of these types of clues!

Well, this offensive troll post shows why they still need to make the gay plea.

Oh, and as any regular watcher knows, almost all of the interviews are prompted responses. Thus, the producers probably asked "How does winning make you feel as a gay man?"

Posted by: ccouger

I also really liked how they had the previous players all come back at the end; that was a nice touch and really added to the fun of the moment. Did they do that for the end of every race? This is the first one I've seen all the way through. It shows you though, how a show that has no humiliation involved in it (as the other reality shows routinely do) had to resort to showing a teaser clip of John naked in the previews! That was such an inconsequential part of the show! I thought maybe it was something to do with some ritual they had to perform! Great show though, I really want it to continue! I wish I had learned about this show sooner.

Posted by: zyzzx

This was a good leg of the race. It was fun seeing many options for a change and the chance for teams to make big mistakes, like the goats did. In most legs the risks are small. I wish more legs were like this one was.

It was great seeing them end up in Sun Devil Stadium. Section 214 isn't too far from my seats in this year's Fiesta Bowl. It was weird seeing overcast skies and wet pavement in Phoenix!

Yep, they do this every time. It's a really nice touch. I'd still like to see a full-fledged reunion show like Survivor has (hosted by Phil, of course), but I don't think the show gets good enough ratings to allow that.

My feelings exactly! They just got focused, they weren't having poor sportsmanship, they just didn't want to be bogged down with Jon and Kelly's poor sense of humor.

I just wanted ANYONE to win but Jon and Kelly. I don't even think they deserved to be there, but I'll admit they did start playing a better game by the second half of the season. They made so many mistakes in the first half of the season. Chip & Reichen did play a really good game - I wasn't a big fan of theirs but I thought they played well.

For the person who remarked that it lacked "punch" - I think this might be due to the fact that you knew who was going to win. In the other seasons it seemed like the editing made it more of a mystery who was in the lead, or how close they were.

Posted by: Animgif

I was SUPER happy to see C&R win...yay! This was my first season to watch AR...and I only got into it 1/2 way through. Is it in syndication anywhere?!? I'd love to watch them all now!

Posted by: TiVo'Brien

Man, that trip to the aboriginal cultural center was barely worth the effort. I think the teams spent maybe 5 minutes there. They watched the guy create fire and throw a torch. Wow.

Posted by: esperantisto

I agree that I want to watch all 4 seasons now. I know the outdoor life channel is repeating them in Canada. Somebody needs to do it here.

Posted by: TiVo'Brien

Assuming Jon fell backwards a little bit, this had to hurt like hell:

No offense but that is a crappy excuse for rudeness. How much effort does it take to raise your hand and move it back and forth in a waving motion? Would that really lead to a lack of focus? Give me a break! C & R were often rude to other teammates and personified the "ugly American" too often. Chip especially was often very child like with his little tantrums. I give them credit for being smart players when it counted but as I have said before I thing they are (Chip especially) are very unlikeable people.

Actually, Jon and Kelly were on the same flight as Chip and Reichen to Arizona so the missed flight to Honalulu did not cost them the race. It must have been demoralizing but the race was lost because their seats to AZ were 4 rows back and they did not have the exact address of the anchor in AZ.

Posted by: Skittles

I blame Jon & Kelly's loss on not finding out ahead of time where the Anchor was in Phoenix. That really put Chip & Reichen into the lead.

Had Jon & Kelly put some extra effort into finding out the specific address of where it was, they would have won. They breezed through the Stadium Puzzle and could have easily overtaken Chip & Reichen during that puzzle had they been a bit more prepared.

Still not glad Chip & Reichen won though. I was really rooting for Jon & Kelly.

Have to disgree with you there. Given Jon's history on the show, he would have responded with some stereotypically gay limp-wristed wave, or other condescending/insulting response. And would have achieved his & Kelly's psych-out goal with no words having to be exchanged. C&R were right to ignore them at that point in the race.

Posted by: pmyers

Chip driving off the road was classic! I really like the legs like this one where it just says "get to XX" and the teams can get there however they want. It allows them to make more good choices and bad choices.

C&R did deserve to win though. They went the extra mile and got as MUCH information as they could beforehand.

Best lines were from Kelly "Jon do you want to put your panties back on now?" "Whoa....look at that big....Rock".

I liked Jon & Kelly as they are the team most like my wife and I, although maybe a little more immature (but probably not) ;)

I'm surprised that Jon and Kelly couldn't find an internet terminal anywhere in the airport to look this info up. Seems like every big airport I have been to lately has at least a few of these set up somewhere.

I don't think it was a matter of "couldn't" it was a matter of didn't. Thus why I don't have any problem with C&R winning.

I've seen every episode, and I can say that each one is great to watch. While I haven't seen it in syndication anywhere, you can be fairly certain that it will be shown on the new Reality Central channel coming in January. I expect DirecTV (my TVSP) to pick it up, but nothing has been announced.

Kelly said it when Jon was cracking open the rock with the hammer and chisel (naked) on the beach.

Posted by: pmyers

Did anybody else catch why Kelly didn't swim in the water on the last leg?

Posted by: DLiquid

This was a good episode. I wish The Goats were there to make the ending more exciting, but it was still a nail biter for me. I kind of wish they had taped the clues under the bleachers for the stadium puzzle. C&R really didn't seem to figure out the whole clue (white, white), and just ran through section 214 until they saw the yellow envelopes. C&R did play it pretty smart, though. They were trying to do everything right and it definitely paid off for them.

That certainly was a factor (and possibly THE factor - can't tell from the editing), but C&R pumping cash (at least $200?) into the cabbie couldn't have hurt too much.

Posted by: dthmj

J&K were giving their cabbie cash as well... in fact, it sounded like they were giving more then C&R.

She doesn't look like she'd be that strong of a swimmer. :) She did say something before they decided on Jon that implied to me that she is either not a good swimmer or can't swim.

Nope..she mentioned not being able to swim in the ocean "today"....that means it was her time of the month (you are not suppose to swim in the ocean if you are menstrating due to sharks, etc) . No wonder she's been bitchy ;)

From the way the episode was edited, it didn't look like it helped, either. C&R's cab wasn't speeding much, and they were giving the guy $50 bills.

J&K's cab, however, was running "last minute yellow" lights, and they gave him no less than three $100 bills. This after the episode a few weeks where Kelly whined about Jon being stingy with their money. :)

Posted by: okleydokley

Not happy about the winners. Again they were no fun to watch and didn’t seem to be cordial to any of the other teams. Not that I thought Jon and Kelly were any better. I wanted the clowns to win, but you can’t always get what you want.

I loved the clue in the stadium that they actually had to somewhat figure out. (yes, taping the clue under the seat would have been better as mentioned above).

I also think the clue in Australia should have said "Get yourselves to the southern most point in the United States." instead of go to Hawaii, on the Island of Hawaii, on Papakolea Beach -- Which is the southern most point in the united states.

Teams might have headed to Florida or to Guam if they didn’t research correctly, or think it through.

Yah, that was a mistake, they should not have let somebody just walk by and see the clue, it should have said "look below" and have been taped under the seat, so the people who figured it out quickly would find it a lot faster than people who didn't.

I'd like to see a few changes for the next one, if they have a next one.

One person can't do the solo task 3 times in a row....Did Kelly do more than 1 the whole race?

I know they don't want teams falling behind by days, but basically if you aren't eliminated, it doesn't matter what place you are in, you will be tied with everybody sometime the next leg....Maybe give bonus minutes for the last leg for every time you come in first, second etc...?

More thinking and puzzles, less digging through piles of manure, sheep hair, etc...

-smak-

Posted by: forecheck

I am assuming there must be a rule that says you can't call anyone for help? Otherwise why wouldn't Jon and Kelly call either a friend or information in Phoenix to get the address for the anchor? They obviously had enough money for plenty of long distance calls from the Honolulu airport.

I completely agree. I enjoy TAR, but there is an important element of intellectualism that is missing. The teams routinely must test their strength, fortitude, and endurance, but why never their brains? Indeed, each season of TAR seems to have less and less brainwork involved. I worry that this is a reflection on our societal values.

At Caltech, where I went to school, we played games very similar to TAR (although they were a bit more local to Los Angeles :) ), an activity we called "stacking." We generally had a much better balance between physical tasks to perform and puzzles to solve. (except for "brute force" stacks where the single task would generally be "tunnel through this 12-inch slab of concrete" :D ) Perhaps the producers of TAR should talk to some Techers.

The show would be much more interesting if the Route Infos were more than just "get to place A." Often, they're even worse than that: "Get to place A using one of the following airline flights." Ugh. The game should allow for more team problem-solving on all levels. "Get to the biggest city in the smallest country in South America by any means at your disposal."

But is it exciting television to watch someone doing geographical research in a library, at a computer, or via phone? Present some of the teams we've had with such a task and it would take hours for some to figure it out. Not only that, you'd likely have multiple teams fall days behind trying to recover from mistakes. I'm sure there could be a happy medium since I will agree that there's too much hand-holding in most of the "challenges".

BTW, NBC aired a show similar to TAR a summer or two ago called Lost a summer that used vague clues like you're suggesting. It didn't last long.

Posted by: uncdrew

Shouldn't most cabbies in a town like Phoenix know where one of the bigger landmarks is?

"Find the big anchor" "Uh, there's a big anchor in my town? Really, where?"

And yes, I like the Mole for it's intellectual puzzles, and TAR could use many more of them.

Well, a good portion of TAR is film of teams purchasing airline tickets and waiting in airports. Put some incidental music to the video, add some quick reveal and zoom shots, and you can even make breaking rocks open with chisels exciting.

Well...I've lived here for 11 years and I had no idea what or where that was. When the clue said "get to the U.S.S AZ memorial" I was thinking about the memorial in Hawaii.

Posted by: Uther

Ditto.

Posted by: kyote

I lived in phoenix for 10 years and saw the anchor once when downtown (not a place you want to go to very often) and saw it but had no idea what it was. it looked like some cool statue of an anchor but i never got close enough to say "oh, that's what that is."

however, when the said papago park i knew exactly where to go. :P

Good episode. I too think more of the intellectual tasks would be great in future versions. That stadium puzzle was well designed.

My favorite example of this was in The Amazing Race 2 where the teams leaving the pit stop from the previous leg were told to travel the library in the city they were in. Some of the teams left right away in the flagged cars sitting nearby only to discover later that the library was in the exact village they stayed in during the pit stop and was just a block away. The cars were for the clue in the library.

Anybody know why there were 4 clues taped to the seats in Sun Devil stadium? Only 3 teams existed at that point as far as we knew.....?

Kelly said on the Early Show there were still three clues when they got to the stadium, so they thought they might be in first place. I think she made a similar statement during the show. So perhaps this was the reason.

On more difficult clues, how about a few lat/long clues? :) "You have $300 for this leg of the race." Followed by "Get to 19°N 156°W for your next clue." Teams would have to figure out where that is, then buy a GPS unit to get there. Oooh I'm evil. :D

They give them maps, there's no reason they couldn't give each team a GPS as well. Maybe give them a clue that leads to the GPS, then another clue that they must use the GPS. I can hear C&R now... "We wanted to prove that a gay man can use a GPS."

From an interview with Chip & Reichen:

What team did you get along with the best?

Reichen: In the beginning of the race, we really got along with Jeff and David, and then the Supremes, Monica and Sheree. And when they got eliminated, everything turned around. Our alliance with David and Jeff was gone because of the fiacre incident. And on that 26 hour train ride, I don't think the viewing audience realized this, but we really bonded with Kelly and Jon, and started up a really awesome friendship. Ever since that train ride, we were having so much fun with each other. My only problem with the editing was that they didn't show how much fun we all had together. They wanted to show more of a rivalry between the two of us, with the gay jokes and everything, but really the gay jokes were flying so often and so funny, we had such a fun time. We were always telling Jon he was gay, and he was always jokingly picking on us for being gay. We had so much fun with it, such an amazing time. But Kelly and Jon were the best. But at the end of the race, we had to ignore them, because we couldn't let that friendship get in the way, we had to compete.

I hardly think Chip and Reichen were being unsportsmanlike by not waving to Jon and Kelly in the airport. Remember a few hours earlier in the race when Jon and Kelly passed them on the highway (before they wiped out)? Jon and Kelly were flipping them off. How mature.

BTW, NBC aired a show similar to TAR a summer or two ago called Lost a summer that used vague clues like you're suggesting. It didn't last long.

I had totally forgotten about this show! Teams were dropped in a completely foreign location, without any idea where they were or how to get where they wanted to go. I don't remember much more than that, except I was disappointed they were all so easily successful at the challenge. I wanted to see more struggle with language and transportation issues, I guess -- more real contact with the cultures they were rubbing up against.

I also noticed that there was 4 cars at the airport in Hawaii too.

I'm sure it was just to keep the teams guessing what position they were in.
