A few eposodes ago on the wire, Prop joes was talking to Omars handler, and said someone was talking "parley" (sp?). That got the handler interested. What does Parley mean ?

Posted by: hawkamer

You spelled it right. It means "to meet with an enemy."

And if I'm not mistaken it is under some sort of assurance that there will be no harm done to either of the enemies.

I remember in the first season, Prop Joe set up a parley with Omar and Stringer. He made sure the two met up, and said something to the effect of, "I helped set up this parley so don't do anything stupid"

You guys obviously didn't see "Pirates of the Carribean", as this is explained ad nauseum in the flick. They claim that it's part of "The Pirate Code". Don't know if that is in any way historically accurate, but it's interesting.

Well, a little. :)

PARLEY!

Posted by: grecorj

really? I always assumed it was short for "parlez" as in "parlez-vous français?"

so parlez=speak/talk

"Sit down for a parlez" = "sit down for a talk"

no?

granted, I don't speak french... :D

grecorj - you assumed correct. It actually comes from the Old French parlee, which got turned into Parley in English, and Parlez in French.

I have to disagree here. It doesn't mean to just sit and talk. There are specific rules that govern the act of Parley. Parley goes back even more than Pirates (Pirates did invoke rights of Parley). This term is often used by street thugs/gangs so that they may have a discussion without fear of attack. During the late 80's when the Crips and Bloods were at war. Parley was invoked to hammer out a peace treaty. If memory serves, Wu Tang lyrics speak to Parley also.

Just for kicks I looked Parley up on Dictionary.com

Just for kicks, I looked it up at thesaurus.com

By the sound of it, shouldn't "thesaurus" be some sort of dinosaur?
