I wish I could get DirectTV

Sounds like it would be cool to have, being able to watch one show while recording another. Or even watching a show from NP and pausing one in the live buffer whilst recording from another show. However, since I live in the city, I can't see having to switch over to get my local channels. Just seems lame. Is there any work-around to this?

I assume by "switch over to get my local channels," you mean that DirecTV doesn't carry locals for your area, so you'd need to get them via cable or a conventional over-the-air antenna. Be sure to check the DirecTV Web site to be sure that's the case. I entered the 47708 zip code (the first non-PO Box zip code listed on the USPS Web site for Evansville, Indiana), and if that's correct, it looks like DirecTV doesn't offer locals; however, you might be eligible for distant networks (NYC and LA) if you're far enough from whatever transmitters serve you. (You'll need to enter your complete address on DirecTV's site to determine if you're eligible in this way.) You might also be able to get waivers from your local stations, but you'll have to do that on a station-by-station basis. For either of these two exceptions, you'll only be able to get ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox affiliates, but not PBS, UPN, or WB.

You could keep one or both of your SA boxes and set them up for "cable + satellite", with lowest-level basic cable service for your locals into the TiVos' RF in connectors and DirecTV satellite receivers (get models with serial ports) in on the RCA/S-Video jacks. Then add a DirecTiVo, for the joy of recording two DirecTV things while watching another, and hope that someday Evansville's locals gets added.

Alternatively, if you don't mind which network affiliates you get off the satellite and are willing to be a bit dishonest, you could "move" to St. Louis or Louisville (give an address there as your service address and your house as your billing address) which do have locals available.
