Iron Chef USA

Was I hallucinating? I just watched an Iron Chef from mid-July, and instead of Iron Chef, it was Iron Chef USA with William Shatner as the Chairman. Filmed in Las Vegas. I kept waiting for the punch line, but there didn't seem to be one... It was surreal.

I remember hearing about that when it originally aired, and avoiding it like the plague. What a bad idea. I'll take the original any day!

Yeah, I had heard about that as well, but had never been able to find it on TV. I figured with Shatner in charge it had to humorous ...

"The .... Iron Chef is ... chopping ... the veal! My god!"

Time for a new Wishlist... :)

There were a couple of them.. I think originally on UPN... It was horrendous.

Hmm, I never thought about it from the Shatner angle. It might be worth it for that. I guess my worry is that the great appeal of the original is the Japanese game-show aspect which I think is unlikely to be captured in an American version. And the giggling Japanese actresses. That just can't be replicated.

I wonder what kind of ingredients they'll use? My impression is that Americans are a lot less broad in what they'll find a delicacy.

"This week's theme.... CHIPOTLE!" :D

.... wow....

I think of that as more of flavoring than a main ingredient! This should be interesting...

"This week's theme... MADAGASCAR HISSING COCKROACHES!"

Oh, wait that's Celebrity Chef Fear Factor. Never mind. :D

I only saw the one episode of this. I'm not a huge Iron Chef fan, but I did enjoy Shatner in the Chairman role.

I saw two episodes of this and wrote Food Network that for the good of humanity, it needed to be taken off the air. Why? Let's see...

And I could go on and on and on. Why didn't someone cancel this after they made the first episode. Did they even get people to watch it first? Was the focus group on crack?

Worst... Show.... Ever

The first episode was really bad. Mostly because you couldn't hear any of the announcer dialogue because the crowd was so loud. I saw a later one that was not quite as bad, because they'd toned down the crowd mics or something. Still no Iron Chef original version though.

I saw this before ever seeing the real Iron Chef and thought it was funny and watchable. But now as a fan of the Japanese series, I can't stand the USA version. The American announcers add nothing and explain nothing, the editing of the show tells us nothing about how the dishes are developing, the judges are lame-o, and somehow everything seems staged or at least phony... which in a way it is. But I still think having Shatner as the Chairman was inspired casting. :D

Is the backstory behind the Japanese "Chairman" real or B.S.?

Just as much BS as the backstory for Shatner. I guess the guy that plays the Chairman is a soap opera star or something in Japan.

I kinda wonder how much the American "translation" adds to the show--I think the Japanese and American versions are pretty much the same when they begin, but the English translation of the Japanese version adds a little intelligence.
