The Wire 8/24 Season Finale (tip: there are probably spoilers within).

A great close to a great season. Again, not all lose ends are tied up, the way it should be.
The major ones are though: 1) The girls, and 2) Sobatka.

The opening scene was heartbreaking. Well done, but I wish it could have gone another way.
I think it would have been a perfect season had there been some closure for Sobotka. I wanted vengeance.
Major plotlines for next season. I can only see it getting better. When does season 3 begin again? ;)

Yeah, as we've come to expect in all the previous season finalés (cough), it was kind of a downer. (But I mean that in a good way...) They only won small victories, and the show's makers made it very clear in the final montage that the vistories don't really amount to anything. And I disagree with Turtle: The major ones were The Greek (who got away) and Stringer/Proposition Joe (whose involvement in the case was never figured out). Getting Frank and finding out who killed the girls didn't really accomplish anything substantial...
I suspect we'll never see The Greek again; it looks like next year is going to be the Barksdale operation again, with The Unit going after the new Proposition Joe/Stringer alliance, with Omar waiting in the wings to pop Stringer. Plus, of course, whatever else they decide to throw in (why do I get the feeling that the Two Stooges, those dumb cops who have been sliding ever deeper into disillusionment and corruption, might be headed to a rather less harmless form of corruption...).

I think that brother Moz wants to pop a few people as well.
I chuckled a bit when Avon told Stringer to go ahead and make a deal with Prop Joe.
Bubs rides again.

I did not quite understand the FBI snitch's involvement. Was it that "The Greek" was helping him with counter terrorist stuff so he was warning him ? If so it seems odd that this would be allowed to continue considering the deaths. However since he was receiving messages on his office computer and phoning from his office phone you have to assume it was true.
I felt truely sad to see Frank go, I liked him from the start.

It's a Hollywood trope that Confidential Informers can do whatever they want, and the Feds will cover up for them.
The trope seems to be not entirely ungrounded in reality...

There was an interesting exchange between Avon and Stringer. Does anyone think Avon is on to Stringer, or is Avon just getting fed up with with Stringer's business school metality?
I really like how Daniels played Valchek regarding Prezbeluski. Guess we can expect Prez wil be back in nexts year's detail. Talk about reversal of fortune, at the begining of season 1, Prez was on Daniels' s**t list. Now, Prez has value to the unit.

"and of course, I am not greek"
Heh, when they were asking the russian dude for the greeks name, and the russian guy had no clue.

Prez is cool. He really grew a lot from being a part of the unit.
How did you feel about the ending montage? What did you feel about the black guy's reaction to being told by the FBI to get new management or get shut down. What about the grainery? Will Nick get witness protection since all the main players disappeared?
I've got to say Frank getting whacked still bothers me. His character was written very well and Chris Bauer did a fantastic job of portraying him. I will really miss him.
The possibilities for next year are endless. Stringer, Avon, and Prop Joe. Brother and Omar? Brother and Stringer. Omar and Stringer. Avon and Stringer. Meathead cop #1 (Herc) and meathead cop #2 (Carver). The Greeks and Nick? And on, and on, and on.
What would you set up if you were writing season 3?

There was one scene in the montage where they had the coke coming off of one side of a truck, and the russian tutes coming off the other side of the truck.
Business as usual.

I still have the Season 1 finale on Tivo. Watched it today and compared the final montage with season 2. The detail never really wins. It's all small victories, but the problem continues.
I want this on DVD and I want it NOW! Hell, The Wire may drive me to doing video extraction!

Got this from another site:
quote:
David Simon, creator of The Wire says it best: "We are not selling hope, or audience gratification, or cheap victories with this show. The Wire is making an argument about what institutions - bureaucracies, criminal enterprises, the cultures of addiction, raw capitalism even - do to individuals. It is not designed purely as an entertainment. It is, I'm afraid, a somewhat angry show."

Well, between the few of us in this thread, I'm sure we could come up with about 3 seasons worth of story lines without breaking a sweat! :) I'm interested in how Omar is going after Stringer. Will it be an all-out assault, or we he turn to the police and become a CI, or something in between? Whatever happens, I'm sure it will be highly entertaining. There wasn't much of Omar this season, but every time he popped up he stole the show.

I thought it was clear that Nic decided to blow off witness protection because he wanted to live his life. That was why he went "to work".

When the Greek was at the airport, after checking his coat pockets, he realized that he left something in the hotel room. Any idea what it might be? I think it could be something that ties him to the drugs and the girls, his PDA.
Any thoughts?

I think it was those rosary beads the Lt. Daniels picked up later. In earlier episodes he was always carrying them. I also believe he was carrying them when he killed the guy in Philly.

That I am sure of as well. I'll admit I was a little skeptical in the early episodes. How could a story about dockworkers compare with the drug dealers from season 1? My skepticism was quickly laid to rest.
My guess is David Simon will find something about Baltimore to weave into the story. Perhaps, the zookeepers in the Baltimore zoo have a story that needs to be told - throw in Omar, The Greek, Stringer, etc. - and I'm confident it will still be the best thing on tv.
Great season. And good news about the DVD release.

I was rather disappointed in the way the season ended. And, after reading that the show is not for gratification or entertainment was rather to show corruption but still so many loose ends that really don't make sense at least to me.
I do like the show very much and it is one of the few that I watch the same night it shows.

Some ends are tied up, others are left loose, those other "loose threads" will be explored in the next season.

I really believe that this was the best show of this year. Writing and performances eclipsed even the other great HBO shows.

Couldn't agree more.
