what's up with Monster Garage?

So a week ago the narrator said it was their last week in the garage. I thought "okay, they're getting a bigger garage". Makes sense, they've had a couple of projects that wouldn't fit out the door.

And then there is this week's show, which is something like a head-on collision between Monster Garage and Junkyard Wars. Strangely, one team took one of the worst Monster Garage projects (the rock crawler) and decided to imitate it.

Is this the new format for Monster Garage? Or is it just a way to show a bunch of cool builders, and the real show will return soon?

I think they are just killing time before moving to the new location. I don't know how many episodes are left in the season, but perhaps they are waiting till next season for the unveiling.

The show better get more interesting soon, or I may stop watching. THe projects are getting lamer and lamer, the freebie $ is out of control (the sharkboat got a $17,000 motor for free, among other things), and Jessie James is barely involved anymore.

What's the point of a budget if they are going to get $20K in free parts every episode?!?

I agree. I found the earlier episodes fun to watch, but now the vehicles almost always end up with 90% freebie parts and look nothing like the original (Isn't one of the 'rules' that the vehicle must appear stock?).

I still find it entertaining at times, but I liked it more when the teams really had to improvise to come up with something special rather than get a truck load of brand new parts that are exactly what they need.

I was fine with the freebie rims and tires as it didn't really effect the build and just made it look cooler, but the freebies have just gotten out of hand now. I remember the first episodes were teams really had to struggle to stay under budget.

True - rims/tires, paintjobs, and even sound systems don't affect the outcome that much, so those freebies don't bother me. They are pretty much for the aesthetics anyway.

It's the freebies that are essentially the heart of the project that are annoying. I'd rather see them have to make do with junkyard parts or have to fabricate more stuff themselves.

Or at least raise the budget to accomodate the fact that they need more than 3 grand in parts.

yup...that $17k motor was way out of line. Also all the $1k+ actuators being free now when other teams had to buy them is crap. Heck...some of the episodes the build team has used only a few hundred dollars of the budget yet had thousands in freebies.

The worst one for freebies had to be the hot air balloon. I know that they needed the balloon and that cost a fortune, but they must have had $40k+ worth of stuff when they were all done with the project.

I agree. The freebie rims and stuff didn't bother me, but the free actuators and other expensive parts are coming too often. If you're going to do that all the time, then drop the pretense of a budget.

The projects have been mostly lame recently. Here's hoping things get more interesting with the new season.

When the vehicles stopped looking 'stock' which was one of the BIG rules, and the one that made the whole thing *fun*, IMO, that's when I lost interest.

I still watch, because hubby & the boys watch, but it's not the same. And the freebies are ridiculous--I liked when they tore the cars apart & parted 'em out on Ebay to extend the budget. THAT'S creative.

I much prefer American Chopper now.

I totally agree that right now American Chopper is more interesting. One reason is that it is the same guys each week and you begin to feel you know them a bit. When Jesse was doing more on MG, it was more interesting, now that he is only around for the design and sometimes works on the build it is less interesting. As with all of these, the personality drives the show.

And, the no longer looks STOCK part is a big reason why I don't like it as much. That idea of building a transformer was cool. Anyone can built neat machines, but neat machines that look stock is another whole deal.

Maybe they should get Monster House to design the next Monster Garage.

I hate to say it but even Jesse is starting to bother me now. Between the silly caps that make him look like dufus and nasally drone voice he's becoming less of a "tough guy" and more like some sort of Bazooka Joe cartoon character. I liked him better when he was more involved, stressed out and telling people to go F*** themselves. :)
Now he's just kind of stands in the back and whines about the people who are actually doing the work.

I like American Chopper MUCH better now. Although they need to try and lessen the focus on Big Paul pushing deadlines (in other words, pushing Paulie because "to be honest with you, I just don't see how he's gonna make the deadline") and Paulie resisting him, but always coming through in time. blah, blah, blah. Even so, I LOVE the show, because I love the people in the show.

The same producers are turning out a new show next season called American Hot Rod that looks pretty darn good too.

Not sure I agree that this will be good. The few snippets I have seen make this look like trailer trash car building. I keep looking for the cup of chew spit.

If it is as good a AC, that would be cool but it is hard to catch lightening in a bottle like they did with AC. Yes, I AM tired of Paul Sr talking about how he is the one running things especially since that is HIS job in OCC. He runs the company, Paul Jr, Vinnie and the HS kid build the bikes, (Along with the zillion guys I am sure we never see). In order for AHR to work, there will need to be people we want to watch week after week, not just cool cars.
