I need an HDR312 Image with Version 3.0 or better of software so that I can use an external modem. Would anybody be so kind as to direct me as the regular place I looked had an earlier software version.
TIA

try this
ftp://ftp.abs.net/tivo/Backups/

You'll want to use the 3.0 image for the 112 on that site.

I am having trouble accessing these images. Could you confirm which file needs to be copied to /tivo.bak

Phillips_HDR112_3.0.zip is the image you want. You'll need to unzip (and I think that gets you a group of RAR files that you need to stitch back together with WinRAR to get the file, which probably ends in .mfs rather than .bak).

How do I get the WinRAR command. I downloaded three files, one of which ends in an RAR extension. 30gig201.r00 , 30gig201.r01, 30gig201.rar
After I run the WinRAR command, will I have a file that ends in .mfs. Is that the file that I restore to my new drive.

Yes, that's it.

Can you tell me where to get the winRAR command

Any Series 1 Philips stand alone image is fine for the 212 and the 312.
See Hinsdale's thread 'How-to upgrade your TiVo' above for info on what to do with the backup file.

Can I use the image on this site with MFS 2.0 (it says it was created using
version 1.0) - also I want to hack the box (TivoWeb, Telnet, etc) so should
I use the 3.X OS or an earlier variant?

on hinsdale, it explains how to get an iimage from the old hd on to a new one. it doesnt say anything about getting an image from my computer desktop to the new tivo hd. ??? *SO FRUSTRATED*

yes it does - search for 'Note for those with already tested image' (assuming you don't want to save anything if you have an existing drive)
Here it is in a nutshell:
1) download new 'tested image' and move to right directory on C: drive
2) attach drives a-la hinsdale (you don't need to put your old drive
on the chain assuming moving from single drive to new larger single drive)
3) boot to linux and mount drives
4) restore and expand using mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi <image source> <new drive>
5) unmount, install and reboot!
The question still remains is if you can use MFS 2.0 to restore a 1.0 image (the only images I have found were created using 1.0)

Yes, it'll work with 2.0

So if I do use a 'clean image' do I need to put this on a FAT32 drive - or
can I simply use an NTFS (because it is going to read the image as opposed
to writing one) - I know that I don't want to boot to XP but if the
above is correct, it would simplify doing a 'clean upgrade'

Yes, you should be able to mount the NTFS partition read only.
Posted by: willr666
Could you provide the syntax for mounting read-only?
I would be mounting the entire drive, not a partition (I don't use
partitioins for my NTFS drivers).

You don't use partitions? Really?
Anyway, just use the normal mount command, the read-only-ness happens automatically.
