Performing As...

Did anyone else see this crapfest? I was somehow intrigued enough by the promo to set up an SP and was ambushed by Fox's idea of a good show. I seem to recall a similar show on UPN or WB hosted by Kid or Play that didn't seem to suck as much as this one did.
The premise is that joe and jane sixpack come on the show and the elite of the makeup, choreography and fashion world help them to look like the singer they are pretending to be. The contestant then performs (no lip-synching) the song and is judged by the greatest has-beens ever assembled in a Denny's parking lot at a moment's notice. One caveat, the performer they are emulating has to be old, dead or talentless. Last night's entries:
Tim McGraw
Tina Turner
Freddie Mercury
Celine Dion
Christina Aguillera
And the winner was:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Tina Turner, Freddie was robbed
The best part is that I watched an hour show in 5 minutes. Hooray for me.

it was awful.

Sounds a lot like "Becoming..." on MTV, where fans get the opportunity to act as their favorite singer/actor/etc. Very lame.

The guy doing Freddie Mercury was pretty good.

I didn't catch the Fox version, but I think the alpha case for this virus was BBC's "Stars in Their Eyes". Same exact premise, but from the early 90's - crappy 80's Europop all over the place. I can't image that Fox was able to improve much, but then it couldn't have gotten much lamer, either ...
Could it?

I too missed the Fox version, but yes, this is based on "Stars in Their Eyes."
I also remember a syndicated version of this show as well from a few years back... I don't remember what it was called, or too much about it. I remember that it featured a male host, possibly African-American... the format was always a short video of the contestant at home, on the job, whatever... then a short banter with the contestant where they unveil who they are going to be transformed into... they walk through a door and emerge in a huge burst of stage smoke before a studio audience in full makeup and wardrobe. Repeat for the second contestant. (This might be the same show that harvscar mentions on WB or UPN, but I clearly remember it being syndicated.)

"Stars in Their Eyes" in the UK had a contest aspect, where the ten weekly winners were gathered together for a big live special at the end of the season. In that special, each of them performed again and then the phone lines were opened to choose an overall winner, who was announced at the end of the show. Will the FOX version be doing the same thing?

"Your Big Break" hosted by Kid of Kid and Play (think House Party movies) minus the 2 foot tall 'fro that he used to have.

I finally got around to watching this. Answering my own question, yes, this has the aspect of having weekly winners who will get together at the end of the season for a final competition.
The host is wearing a black leather jacket, just as in the UK version. One difference is that in the UK version, they introduce the person by showing what they do, where they live, what their hobbies are, etc, but don't tell who they will be performing as until right before they step through the wall of fog to emerge as that performer. In the US version, they tell you right from the beginning who they will be performing as, then they tell you something about them and why they chose to perform as that person. I think I like the US version better in this respect.

I finally got caught up with this show. As soon as I saw the awesome performance of the "Aretha Franklin" performer in Week 5, I said "she just won tonight and she is going to win the whole thing too." And she did.
The judging in the finale was done by the same judges who judged each week; there was no aspect of letting America vote. Also it only went five weeks before the finale instead of ten.
