Where to place backup on Win XP machine

Hello... My HD was hosed and I did not have a backup... With the help of some very stand-up folks on this site I was able to download a backup from an ftp site.. I used WINRAR to combine the files from the site into one large file. Per Hinsdale I burned my Boot CD, and set up my FAT partition on my XP machine. etc. I am now ready to restore the backup... The stupid question I have is, where do I place that backup file on my computer?

Thanks

Hinsdale expects it to be c:\tivo.bak, but you can put it elsewhere or call it something different if you rewrite the commandline accordingly.

Thanks Robert... It will be ok to save it at c:\tivo.bak even though that portion of the drive will be NTFS??

No, it won't be okay. The file must be on a FAT partition, not an NTFS partition.

I believe that you can mount the NTFS partition, but it'll be read-only, which means no backing up to it. Much easier to just deal with a FAT partition for everything, if available.

No, winders, you can read NTFS partitions, even though you can't write to them. Therefore, once you've got a backup file, that problem goes away.

You don't have to be as careful about allowing XP to boot as restoring the backup fixes the 'signature problem'.

I assumed we were talkiing about backing up to a NTFS partition, not restoring from an NTFS partition. I apologize for the confusion.
