Anyone Else Lose Their Thumbs?

Odd thing happened yesterday regarding the suggestiong list & manually thumbed programs.
We have a few programs that we have manually thumbed so they appear on the suggestion list and are recorded occassionally.
We made our daily call and didn't turn on the TV for several hours afterward.
When I looked at the suggestion list, the only manually thumbed program was the one that was recording during the phone call. There weren't any other programs listed. The rest were regular suggestions.
I didn't think anything of it until I looked at one of the programs that had already recorded a few days earlier & noticed the thumb(s) gone. I then checked all of the programs with manual thumbs and all the thumbs gone.
Any ideas? The Tivo hadn't been touched in over 24 hours. Did anyone else have their thumbs wiped out after yesterdays (8/27) call?

Ouch! Nope, not me.

Nope, I still have both of them! :)

Very Funny :) :)
See this post also. Seems I'm not the only one with strange things happening.

If I wasn't so certain my manual thumbs were wiped I wouldn't have even posted here.
BUT, I manually put thumbs on items for a specific reason, so this can't be a random occurence. I have plenty of guide data.
Take a look if you recall manually thumbing anything... Is that thumb still there?

Every so often on my series 1 i will see my thumbs dissappeer for a program i have three thumbs up on, but it hasnt happened for a while
Posted by: aadam101
It happens to me quite often. ER and Friends are two of the most common ones. At first I thought maybe it was something with NBC shows but it happens to others as well.
After I read this post I went through my to do list and there were 6 shows that should have three thumbs up that didn't have any. ER and Friends were two of them. I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, Buffy, and That 70's Show were the others. Plus I rate everything so I'm sure it happened to other shows that I just wouldn't notice.

In the over 3 years we've had Tivo (series 1 & series 2) we've never had our manual thumbs disappear.
Thanks for confirming that I'm not losing my mind :).

My Sony S1 loses thumb ratings all of the time, especially on Friends and ER. I called TiVo tech support about 6 months ago and their only advice was that I should completely reset the device, and repeat guided setup. Uh, I don't think so. Good luck!
Posted by: Patrickcg
After seeing this I checked my Tivo and many of my thumbs up disapeared. For all different kinds of stuff ranging from Baseball to Superman cartoons to Colombo
Posted by: aadam101
I'm glad the Friends and ER thing isn't just me. I checked ER again today and the thumbs were gone once again. It's very strange. I have SP's for these shows so it's not the end of the world. It happens now on my series 2 but it also happened on my Phillips series 1. Also, I repeated guided setup many times for other reasons and the problem didn't go away.

This happened to my shop theacher in highschool once.

Actually I've had extra thumbs appear every so often. When browsing the guide, occasionally I see a program that is thumbed one way or another, and nobody in my house thumbed it (my wife never thumbs, and I do rarely).
Posted by: MaryT
Most of our manually thumbed shows are on HGTV - they all disappeared, plus Dateline NBC. I can't tell if any others are gone, since they're for shows that aren't on the air currently (like the Honeymooners).
I did notice that a manual thumb down (on To Be Announced) is still there. Maybe it's only an issue on thumbs up ?

Note that recording a program (directly or by creating a season pass) that never had a thumb will result in an automatic thumbs up (implied thumbsness).

For some reason, Buffy the Vampire Slayer on my TiVo tends to lose its thumbs ratings every now and then.
Its really rare though.

Mary, I had the same thing happen were I lost my thumbs ratings. I was wondering if a reboot has anything to do with this. Did you happen to reboot sometime prior to loosing your thumbs, but after the big NE power outage?

My TiVo recently gave Howard Stern 3 thumbs up!?!
I came home, it was recording and when I looked to see what was recording I noticed the thumbs up.
I hate Howard Stern with a passion, I find the program pedantic and I know for a fact that I never gave it any thumbs up! Needless to say I gave it "the finger" (3 Thumbs Down) I just hope the settings stick.

My Series2 fairly regularly loses the Thumbs rating on "Home Improvement." I'm pretty sure I've seen the same thing happen on one or two other shows, but I can guarantee it's happening on "Home Improvement." Here's that thread:
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...threadid=117467
I repeated Guided Setup quite some time ago and it hasn't helped. I've also had one or two cases where I've set up a recording on an apparently-non-Thumbed movie and when I go back to the listing information it now has a DOWN THUMB (I think I'd previously given it that Thumb but it wasn't showing up until I scheduled a recording).

I can't recall if I rebooted after the power outage. I try to do it every so often. Plus, we lost power for about 20 minutes in my neck of NJ. We have a surge suppressor/UPS - but we only use the UPS for the cable box. We keep the tivo & it's modem on the surge suppressor only.
I can give more info.... Only manually thumbed programs that were on the suggestion list lost thumbs, less the one that was recording at the time of the daily call.
So, the thumbs were there when I came home from work. Sent Tivo off for it's call. When I looked about 2 hours later the suggestion list was really short & all the manually thumbed programs (plus related programs) were gone. The only manual thumb left was the HGTV program recording at the time of the call. How do I know this? Because I manually set off the call when I came home from work and had just looked at the suggestion list.
Other than that, the suggestion list still hasn't come back to normal, but we haven't lost thumbs since.

I had a similar experience, but a little different.
All my thumb ratings are still there, but my "Tivo Suggestions" list shows nothing - it acts like I don't have any thumb information (like a new unit). However, I can go to the channel guide and see that my ratings are still there. Right now Tivo is recording NOTHING on it's own, only recording my Season Passes and Wishlists, the TODO list shows no suggestions at all!
This is a SAT-T60 DirecTivo unit, unmodified.

IIRC, one of the ways to try and get your Suggestion List back is to turn off Suggestions, reboot, turn on Suggestions, reboot again, and then force a daily call.

Any particular reason? I have a ups but only have my DirecTiVo connected so it can still record during a power outage. I would think you'd want the tivo AND cable box connected to a ups for the same reason.

Yes :).. It's more important our cable box holds it's power than we keep recording during an outage. Our UPS won't hold very long if it's also powering tivo.
We originally had both Tivo & the cable box on UPS. We went on vacation, and lost power about 2 days after we left. The cable box turned off and we had 20 hours of ABC recorded. We then took the tivo off the UPS.
We haven't had the issue since.

I suggest you put the TiVo back on the UPS. The most important reason for putting the TiVo on the UPS is not so that you can record programs during a blackout but because this provides additional protection to TiVo's hardware.
If you are concerned about using valuable drive space recording a bunch of nonsense during a blackout, use composite or S-Video to connect your cable box and TiVo instead of coäx/RF. With this configuration, if the cable box turns off, it will stop sending a signal, and TiVo will stop recording.
Posted by: miller890
I thought the UPS set up was off...I see why Mary did what she did... The UPS keeps the cable box on during a power outage. So if you do loose power while on vacation or something you don't come back to hours of missed shows. Makes sense, but I would get a bigger UPS...you don't want your TiVo turning off and on like someone flicking a light switch when power restores. Usually there is a brown-out condition (not a full 120 volts...or something along those lines) after an outage, this is the worst sort of power disruption for electronics, other than a lightning spike. The UPS's with low-voltage limits are a few more bucks, but it's your TiVo.:D Anyways....the missing thumbs are still a mystery still.
Posted by: MaryT
I agree with you that power spikes aren't good for the Tivo, but isn't the surge suppresor part of the unit enough to protect the hardware?
The UPS we have holds for 15-30 minutes (I forgot which).
Can you suggest a unit?

A similar thing just happened to me, too. I saw that TiVo had scheduled Buffy as a medium-priority suggestion (Buffy is not in my to do list), and I thought: that's odd—Buffy has three thumbs up (and had the top spot in my season pass manager for years), so it should be a high-priority suggestion. Instead it had no thumbs and appeared around the middle of TiVo's list of suggestions.
Well, I guess the collaborative filtering does work—people who like the other things I do apparently like Buffy, too. :)

Two days ago, I noticed that The Simpsons had lost its Thumb rating (either three or two Thumbs UP).

Can people who are seeing this issue currently send me a PM with their name and TiVo service number so that we can see if there are any trends? If you have noticed it happen on particular shows, please include that info as well.

Marge: You caught me at a _real_ bad time, Moe. I hope you understand I'm too tense to pretend I like you.
Moe: Uh, and how are the little kids doing? I mean, _really_, how are they doing? Any disabling injuries, something, say, that the gambling community might not yet know about? [grabs Bart's leg] Come here, let me see those knees.

Moe: But Blanche, you gotta help me out here, please! I'm 64 grand in the hole! They're going to take my thumbs!

The exact same thing just happened to me with The Simpsons and Curb Your Enthusiasm. I was on spring break last week, so I left my TiVo to its own devices for that time, and when I came back not only were those particular thumb ratings gone, my TiVo had recorded some radically different suggestions (e.g., Japanese news, Spanish-language talk shows, Jackie Chan cartoons, etc.) instead of the normal array of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm reruns.

I think I posted a followup to my thumb-loss problem on another thread, but not here. The problem ended up as a hard-drive going bad, thumb data loss was the first one of a couple symptoms indicating something was wrong.

I think of the planet Twilo every time this thread gets bumped.
But I don't think Mary's TiVo has 20-20-20-20 vision. :(

WTH?...
Ok, I got fed up again with the stupid suggestions. I deleted all suggestions, re-set ratings data again, then re-booted the TiVo.
Looking under Suggestions, it's now empty with the standard screen telling me that I need to use the thumbs up/down for a while before I'll get suggestions.
So Far So good.
So I start by giving only a couple of shows thumbs up. MASH gets 2 and Cheers gets 2. Those are the main two shows that suggestions would always record for me before and I got used to always having a few episodes of each on hand.
Anyway, I leave it alone for a little while and then check the suggestions screen again. The only show in Suggestions is Frasier. I never gave it a thumbs up but it was recording just then from a season pass.
So it seems that regardless of ratings data, the suggestion engine is weighting season pass shows higher than 2 thumbs.
I check it again later, now it has a few sitcoms like Frasier and Cheers but it also has "Justice League".
How does the suggestion engine come up with Justice League from only MASH and Cheers? I have no season pases for any animated shows or superhero shows of any kind.
It also had not dialed in since the re-set so I don't see how it could be collaborative data. "People who like MASH also like Justice League" It makes no sense for collaborative data to cross genres that way.
Any explanation for this weird suggestion?
Posted by: hutchca
Over in the Help Center, bbwebb mentioned something that hadn't occurred to me.
It seems our TiVos are no longer recording "explicit suggestions" but only "predicted suggestions".
Maybe someone who understands how the suggestion engine works could explain how this would happen.

In my case, I'll have to disagree. On my Series2, I've had Thumb losses with the original drive and the subsequent two replacement drives. None of those drives had any problems. I replaced the original 80GB drive with a 120GB drive just for space reasons shortly after buying the TiVo. I'm pretty sure I had seen Thumb losses on that original drive (although I might be mis-remembering Thumb losses on my old Series1 TiVo as belonging to the Series2). I know I had Thumb losses on the 120GB drive. But, in tracking down a problem with a Failed While Loading Data problem (it's due to too many Thumbs in the data base: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...threadid=131393 ), I found that 1) there were no problems with that 120GB drive, and 2) the problem also continued on the new 160GB drive which I replaced it with in various ways (see that earlier thread).
