Minor problem was it my upgrade?

I recently replaced the 40 gig in my HDVR2 with a 160 gig maxtor (not hacked so I am using 137 gigs).
Since upgrading I have seen a couple of instances of video and audio pausing. Rewinding SOMETIMES makes the problem go away and other times it seems to be a part of the recording.
Glitchy drive? Glitchy Satellite?
Wasn't raining but the scrambled pixels I saw one time looked just like rain fade.

Well, it's hard to be sure. It could be the very early stages of a disk failure or it could be a problem with the satellite feed or even the TiVo over heating.
You might want to run diagnostics (if the drive isn't locked now). If PowerMax doesn't find anything then try DiskSpeed32.

Tivo temp is a constant 54 degrees C. Should I invest in a fan?
I'll monitor the situation more closely.
Do single drives get locked? if locked can I use the gunlock then check the drive?
It's a brand new Maxtor 160 gig so it IS under warranty thank goodness.
Does Tivo's file system map bad sectors and quit using them?
Thanks Robert.

An HDVR2 at 54 degrees C!!! My HDVR2 with a 120GB 7200 RPM Samsung and a 160GB 7200 RPM Maxtor rarely sees 40 degrees C. 36 degrees C is common. Yes, I do have a second fan (weaKnees Twin Breeze kit), but I have two fast hard drives too.
I have to believe that 54 degrees C is too hot. Are you sure the fan is functioning?

Hmmm
per system info its 56 C (normal) the fan is running.

I have no idea what a reasonable temperature for that model is. If Scott says it's too hot then I'd take his word.
I don't think you've got bad blocks, unfortunately as it turns out. Bad blocks are very easy to spot with the diagnostics. The drive is supposed to map out bad blocks automatically, so if you see bad blocks, then the drive is about to drop dead anyway.
However, given that your stutters sometimes replay differently, that suggests that the drive is no longer able to deliver data in a timely fashion. I don't know what causes this - it's probably that the controller is failing and take several attempts to read some blocks - but the manufacturer's diagnostics are not sensitive to this problem and will pass drives that don't work at all in a TiVo.
DiskSpeed32 measures the speed of the disk and if it has to do lots of retries you'll see it as a dip in the through-put.

To be honest, I don't know that 54 or 56 degrees C is too hot. However, my HDVR2 has never been that hot, even when ambient room temperature is 81 degrees F.
As I said, my HDVR2 has never been over 40 degrees C. 14 or 16 degrees C warmer can't be considered good.
