With all the surround sound Home Theater processors out there, I want the option to use the DACs in my processor (much higher quality) and also get some of the surround sound benefits of the recorded signal.

This feature is offered with the DirecTivo combination units (such as the Sony SAT-T60).

The standalone units are analog only (analog audio, analog video); they convert to digital for recording to the hard drive, but the inputs are strictly analog.

The DirecTivo (DirecTV + Tivo) combination units are digital units; they record the bitstream straight off the satellite. On playback, they play back an AC3 signal if the station was transmitted with an AC3 signal (otherwise a PCM signal is played back).
