Is it just me or does Michael Irvin need to go? I thought Sterling Sharpe was loud and obnoxious, but I'd rather have Sterling back!
Posted by: hawkamer
Yes, I thought Sterling fit in nicely. And what's up with adding Rush? He's gotta go.
Posted by: rexdart
Nah, Rush is fine. He is a big time football fan so I feel it's a good "outside" opinion. But as a lifelong Cowboy fan, it pains me to agree that Michael just doesn't belong.
I don't think it's the obnoxious thing (which he is), other sportscasters/commentators have been that way and it worked fine. But Michael just doesn't. For some reason, he just seems out of place.

Amen to that brother :p

Micheal needs to go that is correct, but Steve Young is not very good either and should go. Changing Sterling for Micheal was a bad trade.
No opinion on Rush yet.

I thought Rush was GREAT. He had clear concise points, and debated (if you can call it that) decently with the other hosts. He had trouble because Mike "Nose Candy" Irvin couldnt shut up and kept yelling the whole time, not giving rush the chance to talk. IMHO I would have liked to have heard more from him.

Also...this show is much better then CBS or FOX's pregame stuff
CBS is the worst though, Boomer, Marino and Sanders are horrible. Its way too boring. The guys on Fox are idiots but at least its more entertaining.

On the same line, they were talking today on ESPN radio to Mike. He flew back from the show on Rush's plane (just him and Rush it seems), he was quite impressed. Dan and Sean picked on him about discussing politics but Michael kind of danced away from it.
I imagine his opinions would be as valuable as anyone with experience but as was stated above, his behavior or "stage presence" I suppose it's called, just isn't flying.
Sitting here anxiously awaiting the delivery of my XM radio so I will never again have to miss ESPN radio at lunch for a local sports event. :D

I still think ESPN's show is the best pregame show and it gives the most information. The CBS and Fox shows are more for entertainment and annoy the heck out of me. Plus they focus on their own conference where ESPN gives equal info on all the games.
Irvin is annoying but the show is great. I really enjoyed watching Sterling when he was on the show.

Absolutely, I have always flipped between Fox and ESPN on Sunday morning (after 11 anyway). This year, however, I just don't find Fox is "doing it" for me, I stayed with ESPN through most of the morning.
Sterling was great, I never found him bothersome at all. Did he leave just on contract reasons or what?

Like you, I typically have flipped between ESPN and FOX, probably lingering on FOX for 66% of the time. However, yesterday I probably spent more time with ESPN. Perhaps it was all of the promo crap that FOX is forcing on us, from the constant Ford mentions and sightings to the awful segments with Kiefer Sutherland. Bradshaw's act is wearing thin, the interactions with Jillian are wearing thin.

Apparently, he was handed his walking papers. I don't know that I agree with this guy's criticism of Sharpe, however, Irvin on Best Damn Sports Show was much better than the one on NFL Countdown.

You know, you have a point there. When I think of him on both shows, I start to get the feeling he is trying too hard to look like he belongs on ESPN. ESPN tends to surround substance with some occasional comic trappings, Fox tends more towards a humorous show with football/sports mixed in. Maybe he wants to distance himself from the laid back attitude of BDSSP and try to be a "serious" analyst with all the raised voices and finger pointing he thinks that requires.
I dunno.
I just wish it was Sunday.

I really like Chris Berman and Tom Jackson. They just need an ex-quarterback that can compliment them. Rush and Irvin just have to go and Steve Young seems to still be suffering from a concussion.
On another note, I have been very impressed with Brian Cox on NFL Live. He waits his turn to talk, makes his point, and then stays quiet to allow a rebuttal. Very impressive, IMHO. He also seems to speak without being afraid of hurting somebody's feelings.

I actually like Irvin on the show. I hated his guts as a player and needed to be convinced to pay attention to him on the show. Yes, he's loud and obnoxious, but he's also not afraid to criticize players and owners. Limbaugh is just a fan who was given a chance to be on tv. There's nothing he can say that would make me believe he has any type of insight. I like Tom Jackson. I wish that Chris Berman and all of his 20 year old anachronisms would just go away. Far, far away.

That's a big shocker with you being from Philly and all. Did you also boo him when he suffered that career-ending injury at the Vet?

Just checking, not arguing, but is there anything that Rush has said thus far that you don't agree with that you would have agreed with had he been a player?
Pretty much what that statement means.
In the end sure it helps to have played but I don't demand it of anyone. If you do, that pretty much trashes a great deal of the sports media establishment. Of course if you would prefer sports only be covered by former participants, that's fine.
I guess I am just trying to figure out which you are against, Rush or a non-player/sports journalist on the show.
Oh, and Rob, if he booed Irvin's injury, wouldn't that mean he was upset that it happened and thus be an Irvin fan? :D I'm just pickin' on ya

I was teasing to begin with, but I probably should clarify. PhillyFan was booing after they got Irvin up on the stretcher and were carting him off the field.

question: Is Rush part of the studio team on ESPN's Sunday Morning pre-game show?? I watched it opening weekend, he he was not there... Where is he??

They have him off to the side, don't know why though. IMHO, they don't have off to the side far enough. Parking lot would work for me. Remember, Rush is a big fat idiot. Get the book, it is great!

Nobody in Philadelphia booed when Michael Irvin got hurt. We cheered. And danced.
Regarding Rush, he's just on the show to create buzz. He has as much NFL knowledge as you, me and my friends. His opinions are as enlightening as ours - not very.
The ESPN pregame show is light years better than the clown show that's on Fox. They get worse and worse every year.

I think rush adds a great perspective to the show. He is able to counter what the others are saying when he thinks they are wrong. I think irvin is just loud and obnoxious.
Rush yes
irvin no.
And as a side note, al franken is just an ideolog blinded by his hate for conservatives. He makes personal attacks on people to demonize them without offering any sort of intelligent input on topics

I can safely assume that you have not read his new book. No personal attacks, just clear and concise facts about the Bush party and the boldface lies they tell on a daily basis. I am just trying to figure out how someone can make these kind of statements about Mr. Franken, while defending Rush Limbaugh. R.L. is the architect of personal attacks and half truths.

Let's not turn this into a political thread. Franken's a buck toothed moron though! :D
