if remote scheduling and linking my 2 tivo's together are the only things i'm interested in - do i still need to buy HMO?

Remote Scheduling and Multiroom Viewing are features of Home Media Option. You can get more info here.

I was going to mention that AOL has a customized version of Remote Scheduling available to their subscribers, but if you want to use Multiroom Viewing you would still need Home Media Option.
