Monster House Budget?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Anyone see the Monster House from 9/8? At one point Steve mentioned how the pool table they though they'd get for free fell through and they got an extra $1000 to find one. I didn't know they had a budget, but I guess they do?

I really liked the bar that they did. Very nice looking and I liked the concept of 3-in-1.

I haven't watched that one yet.

From the website:

Or ... you could call in Steve Watson and the Monster House crew. Sure, you and your family will have to move into an RV for a week and look on as a bunch of strangers tear apart everything you know and thought you didn't love. But remember: They have talents galore, sensitivity to your interests and an unlimited budget.

Obviously they don't really have an unlimited budget because no production company could reasonably operate with zero clue what their costs will be for a season. I think the idea is, that coming in under a particular dollar value isn't part of the "contest" or a basis for what the show is imparting to viewers. I'm sure they keep monetary concerns in mind when they decide which houses/themes to take on.

I caught that line as well. I figure that they typically don't have the "contestants" or whatever you want to call them making financial decisions--after all, the design is pretty much firmed up before they start filming. In this case, part of it fell through. They probably have $1000 budgetted (at the production level) for the pool table that Steve was going to purchase, and so they gave the crew the chance to use it.

Steve still gets on my nerves, but I am liking this show a little more. Anyone noticed how they've really gone from "Monster House" to "Monster Room"? Focusing on one area gives them the chance to explain a little more about what's going on.

When the cops were called, they were just plastering the walls. Were the neighbors disturbed by the lights or what?

Posted by: LoadStar

Possibly the lights... plus I'd imagine that a staple of a television production would be a generator to power the lights, cameras, etc., which can get quite noisy.

What I want to know is how they were able to work until midnight the last night, if they were given a strict 10:00 p.m. curfew.

Maybe they cut a deal with the offended neighbors, seeing as they quit the night before promptly at 10. I'm sure the producers were over at that neighbors to smooth things over the next day. Not to mention the home owners in the RV seemed very friendly with their neighbors.

i bet the neighbors were just jealous of work getting done on their home. Plus, i'm sure its an unsitely mess when the gut the house. Maybe they didn't know it was only going to be a week. With the destruction that they do, it must look like it's going to take years to fix.

Well the last night would have been a Friday night so maybe the "curfew" is later that night.

Also, I was actually impressed by how many projects they had this time as well as that they added some. I really didn't think they were going to have time to do all of them, especially all the brick paths. Who knew that guy could bang them out in a couple of hours?

We always TiVo this show and watched the latest one last night. At the end when they had all the neighbors over, I wonder if the ones who called the police got to come over too.

My guess is the producers are aiming the crew at areas of the house that need "fixing" rather than just all over the house. Most likely easier to get volunteers for the show that way, most likely easier on the shows budget as well as you mentioned giving more focus on what they are doing.

There may also be previous negotiations with the owner, along the lines of "don't touch the kid's bedrooms!" and so on.

They were able to work till midnight on Friday because it was not a week night. During the week, kids have to get up for school. They don't go to school on Saturdays, so the crew could work later on Friday night.

I agree and imagine that it has some limitations from the home owners, based on what they say. It's good to know though from their site they define it as unlimited budget, unlike Monster Garage, which has an unlimited budget, but pretend it has one, even though anything that would blow the budget becomes a freebie.

Steve annoys me when he walks around complaining how nothing is done, and how he wants it done, but does nothing. He should either always participate, or never participate, not take his wishy-washy stance of working on it or not.

I really want that rotating bar they built in the english pub house. Those people were lucky to have a trash room turned into a pub, unlike other people where they modified existing parts of their house.

The rotating bar was an interesting idea, but it didn't look like it stayed in place very well. When they first showed it rotating, they overrotated it slightly, then turned it back... it looks as if you could just push on one side or another of the top to get it to turn. I didn't see any kind of locking mechanism on there. Not great when you're sitting liquids on it. :)

Plus, the rather large gaps between the rotating part and the fixed part didn't impress me. Looked like they could've built the edges of the fixed part out a little closer to the rotating part.

Steve is turning me off to the show more than the whiny crew. I thought it was really ironic how Jessy James said on the "making of" MG show that he didn't see himself as the host of a show--he was just coming to work everyday, building stuff, just like he always does. You take that extreme, and then they go to the other extreme and find an actor to be the MH host.

Loadstar, I seem to remember seeing Steve pull a pin out of the bar before he started rotating it. He might not have locked it back into place afterwards, but it seemed to at least have the ability to lock.

I thought there was a pin as well. That bar top was dang cool.
