I was thinking about buying a Tivo without any drives in it. I want to install two 120Gb drives, but how?? Especially since I dont have any backup images.. Can I just skip the Mfs Tools backup ..Should I undertake this task?? Give me an opion...

THX,
Leo

Ive bought a tivo with no drive in the past and added a 160 G drive to it. I had the benefit of already having a Tivo and therefore had easy access to a back up image. In your case it isnt that difficult to put in 2 120 G drives. If it was me and I didnt have an image I would do the following:
1. Get Tivo with no drive
2. Get two 120 G drives
3. Beg or borrow an appropraite image. (ie if your tivo is a Philips series 1 Stand alone, get a philips SA 1 image).
4. Use MFSTools 2's mfsrestore with the expand option (I think it is x....all explained in Hinsdales guide) to uncompress the image onto the two drives.
....and voila..you should have 240G of drive space.

Added later:
You might be able to get a back up image from tivostuff dot com...click on the backups link.

Also: you want to make sure you use the -s 127 option with the restore to to increase the swap size (dont use a number higher than 127 as this will result in no swap being created. The full command to use would be:
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb (restore/expand to new A and new B with A as secondary master and B as Primary slave... and a small FAT disk mounted as dos to contain the back up image).
This is explained in section 8 of the Hinsdale Guide.

And if you're really keen, Series 1 TiVoes can take /really/ big disks - how about 1 250Gb drive instead of 2 120's?

See page 5 onwards of the 160Gb thread in the underground.
