The O.C. 1x06 - The Girlfriend (Untagged Spoilers)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, considering how long the other thread is and the fact that it looks like this show will be sticking around, I figured that we might as well have a new thread to work from. This way we won't have to use spoiler tags for specific episodes in thread.

I am really surprised that this show is consistently holding my interest; I am really looking forward to tonights show... to the point that I am even planning on watching it in near real time (of course with a 20 minute delay to zip past commercials ;)

Posted by: Sromkie

Argh! I am really disappointed in Ryan for allowing Seth's grandmother to be to get that close. I think that Marissa walking in on the kiss was, of course, very predictable, but the show still makes me want to continue watching. But speaking of disappointment, what is with Marissa retaliating by sleeping with Luke?!? She knows that she doesn't love him (which is becoming more and more obvious with each passing week) yet that's her solution? Well, at least it is a realistic reaction, but she will regret it later on if she doesn't already (which I think she does).

What has continued to impress me is how well the writers have been handling the adult's story lines. I think that this episode progressed Sandy and Kirsten's relationship by leaps and bounds and it was great to see the dynamic between her and her father. Kudos to the writers for not allowing the parents to fade into the background!

Oh, and Summers a B**ch, even if she did have a genunine sweet moment in the end. If it takes that much to make her see you are a good guy, then she isn't worth it!!!

Posted by: aadam101

I know how you feel. Some of the story lines are so predictable and some of the characters are so stereotypical yet I can't stop watching. I don't even want to stop watching. I love this show! I don't watch very many shows in (almost) real time yet for the last 6 weeks I've stayed home on Tuesday just to watch it. I know they replay it later in the week but I really can't wait!

Julie really pissed me off tonight. After last week in the limo I really thought she might stay with Jimmy. I guess that's not going to be the case. I think she'll hook up with Grandpa and then he'll die and leave her everything. That will sure piss Kirsten off and Julie can rub it in Jimmy's face. Grandpa was just too healthy. I smell an unexpected death.

I'm still going back and forth on Seth and Luke. I'm convinced one of them is gay. I'm just not sure who.

I really liked Summer tonight. She's the most unlikeable character on the show but I thought it was really nice when she kissed Seth. Maybe they'll tone down her attitude a little and make her more human and less daughter of Satan.

Julie is still looking out for herself. Another predictable thing will be that Jimmy starts working for Kaleb (alongside Kirsten, by the way) and will some how have enough money to get out of the hole he is in. Julie will stay with Jimmy because all of a sudden it will be in her best interest to do so (perhaps Kaleb will insist).

It's a very enjoyable show. While some things are over the top (is everyone that beautiful in real life?) there is some very good character development going on here. With all of the reality & forensic shows on these days, this show should actually seem fresh even though it is really an update to the old 90210 days. I guess the idea is just old enough to be new.

This episode had what has to be my favorite line from a television show in some time:

"OK....He was shot in the arm, not in the head"

Good stuff. :)

Sun Won't Set on 'The O.C.' Anytime Soon

(Wednesday, September 10 01:03 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - FOX's summertime gamble on "The O.C." has paid off, so the network is letting the series ride.

Two weeks before most new series have even aired their first episodes, FOX has ordered the back nine episodes of "The O.C.," which will give the show a full season's complement of 22 installments. The series ends its summer run next week and will return Thursday, Oct. 30.

" 'The O.C.' is, without a doubt, the big story of the summer," FOX Entertainment President Gail Berman says. "The success of this show has proved to be a tremendous first step towards FOX's stated goal of a year-round programming strategy."

Great news!

So now other networks will start their shows earlier in the summer to steal a following before the main season starts. If it works then all the networks follow suit.

Follow that logic around the track a couple of times and you end up with the networks broadcasting new shows year round.

At some point networks won't risk ending a season because that might mean that they lose viewers over the season break... especially if the competition keeps going, or new shows are starting during the break in the same timeslot.

They've actually started doing that with new Reality Shows during the summer. I think the show that really started the trend was Beverly Hills 90210. Remember the first couple of seasons they also had new episodes during the summer, set during the summertime and not during school?

If the ratings are good enough, and I think they will be, more new shows will start turning up during the summer and I welcome that. I hated summers because I never watch reruns and rarely watch a show that I missed during the regular season.

The thing I find funny is that if Summer is that into money and potential, and is that impressed by Seth's grandfather then why hasn't she put it together and gotten hot for Seth. Not only is she shallow but she's dumb!

Here is this sweet guy whose grandfather "owns" Newport but she'd rather talk to a banker invited to the party than the one single guy throwing the party.

Dumbass...

Posted by: fmowry

I wish Ryan would look someone in the eyes instead of doing that "look out of the side of my head" move. Marrissa was on Jimmy Kimmel a couple nights ago. She seems like a pretty witty 17 year old.

I like the show too, despite being embarrassed to admit it to my friends :)

You know, that is a really good point ;) I never thought about that, but it would be in her character to date Seth (although, probably not publicly. I think she is also very concerned with her image, and Seth is not *cool* enough to be a public boyfriend.

I am still trying to figure out Luke's change (how sincere it is, etc...). It doesn't feel believable that after being shot in the arm that his whole attitude and personality shift like that. But, then again, I guess that depends on how sheltered his life has been.

This episode definitely dealt with a lot of change and character development for all of the actors. I am increasingly impressed with the writers of this show.

Next weeks episode will probably be a stunner and a cliffhanger, so we will all have to wait until Oct 30th to see how things are resolved! :(

I'm not sure where they're going here, but the predictable thing would have been for Kaleb to hire Jimmie to replace Julie (forcing her resignation). That's what I was expecting anyway--and I was pleasantly surprised when it didn't go that direction.

Edit; sorry, I did mean Kirsten, not Julie. Oops!

I never saw it happening that way, since one makes money (Julie) and one loses money (Jimmie) ;)

Huh? Julie doesn't make any money, she's a housewife. Perhaps you both meant Kirsten, Seth's mom?

Besides, I don't see Caleb hiring Jimmy anyway, since earlier Caleb was laughing about how Jimmy lost $4 million.

Oh, you might be surprised... I mentioned something about some show that was on the other night and a fellow I work with you would NEVER expect to watch the show said :

"Oh, that was on opposite of The OC, I watched that instead."

You never know who's a fan....

I have been pleased with the show and the development of Sandy and Kirsten (and jimmie and julie) rather then having them become furniture in the background to the 'younger' storylines.

I predict ol' Julie's going to be looking to get on that Caleb gravy train and displace 'The Girlfriend'.

Julie: money-grubbing bitch or confused house-wife? you decide!

Money grubbing bitch! A house wife actually does helpful things around the house. She is just a money pit and he should be glad she wants a divorce. It should show him what she's really all about. Dump her ass!

I'm not sure if that's what I really want to see happen. She is into the money too much and is very self centered, but I actually feel bad for her more than I am angry at her for that. According to the discussion she had with Kirsten in the limo, she grew up having nothing, and it was only when she married Jimmy that she could get some of the things in life that she had always wanted. I don't think that she had married him for the money (just my opinion), but that it was just a nice side effect of the marriage.

But, of course, now Julie is used to the money and she has been living her life trying not to worry about it. Yes, she asked for a lot and was a big spender, but when a person leaves all of the finances up to someone else, they don't really think about cost. I know that first hand. My boyfriend will spend spend spend until I tell him that he needs to stop for a while so that we can catch up. It isn't that he is selfish, but more that he doesn't think about it until it is brought up. Jimmy never brought up financial troubles to Julie before, so this is probably hurting her a lot and she must feel betrayed and foolish. While he has been the bread winner, she was developing her image in a circle that she had desperately wanted to be a part of her whole life. Now, because her husband didn't have the guts to tell her that they had to watch their money early on, she may loose all of that. Of course she is considering divorce... To her, that seems like the only way she can keep her social standing.

That being said, I hope that she eventually calms down and realizes that Jimmy just didn't want to worry her or deny her anything and that although he didn't go about fixing it the right way, he does love her very much. I think I would like to see them work it out (although, I don't think that is what will happen, at least in the short-term).

Dang, I ramble...

Moving forward this show is officially changing names to:

"The Slow Cheese"

I am sure I will continue to watch, but I sure can't wait for the new season of shows to start so I can at least move The Slow Cheese to the bottom of my season pass list.

Maybe you haven't watched the whole season, but if you recall every attempt he made to talk to her she refused to speak about it with him. She'd say something like, "You know better than to talk about money with me."

Your boyfriend my not be selfish, but her character definately is, and the circumstances and attitudes are what bears that to be true.

LOL!!!!! God, I lost it on that one TR... LOL!!!

Who could forget that line----

Julie is out to protect her way of life... or the "lifestyle to which she has become acustomed to.." as they say in alomony terms I believe.

Jimmy tried MANY times to talk to Ms. "Give me the damn credit card and unless this has anything to do with the immigrant cleaning staff or sex, don't talk to me..." about the money sitch--

Yeah, she's going to be showing up at Caleb's office wearing a trenchcoat and high heels and nothing else in a few eps-- watch and see.

I don't know if I consider that a "real" attempt. Sure, he may have said "we need to talk," but that is hardly "look honey, we're broke." Sure, she doesn't want to deal with money and wouldn't be easy to talk to about it, especially with her quick response, but that is why he just needed to come out and say it. He copped out, plain and simple.

Now don't get me started on alimony. The husband (in this case) earned all of the money and I doubt that she did any housework. They probably had a maid. So in real life I don't agree with the spouse (male or female) getting 50% worth of the estate, when all of the money was earned by the other spouse.

Now child support I always agree with. Damn deadbeat dads (usually)

Has anyone read next week's description in TVGuide? I don't know how to post spoilers so I'm not going to say.

Any guesses though? I think it's Summer.

Well there is some good news and some bad news according to the LA Times. Each weeks episode has built upon their audience and last weeks episode attracted its largest audience ever, at 9.2 million viewers. Plus Fox just ordered a full season committment for the series. That's the good news. Now the bad...

Retyped excerpts from the original article:

Fox had originally announced that the show would come back Oct. 30 in the treacherous 9 pm. Thursday hour ruled by CBS' "CSI" and NBC's "Will & Grace". Since then, however, executives have begun reevalutating the notion of pitting their emerging hit against a proven juggernaut (CSI). At this point, then, the show's producers and fans must wait to see what the network decides. Fox plans to promote "The O.C." heavily during the baseball postseason.

And finally this comment by the writer of the article "Whether its growing audience will be waiting for it remains to be seen".

The reason Fox likes this on Thursday nights, instead of other nights, is because they would like to promote their movies opening up in the theaters for that weekend and Thursday nights are the best night for that. :(

We shall see what the bozos of Fox decide to do in this case.

Chris

Posted by: TiVo Rox

that wouldn't bother me too much. Will and Grace lost its pizazz last season and I've never liked CSI.

Cowards! They can probably steal some viewers from those shows. Now, for me, I'm recording all three anyway :D

Didn't someone make a comment they got married because he knocked her up?

Yes, that is what she said while riding in the limo with Kirsten; and Kirsten said that since Jimmie had done the right thing then by marrying her, that Julie should do the right thing now and stay with Jimmie.

Posted by: KLB

Julie (aka 'Money Grubbing Bitch') did say at one point that she got preggers or else Jimmy probably would have gone back after Kirsten---

But I get the impression that Seth and Marissa are about the same age and that means she was already married (OH! a possible hidden secret maybe?) to Sandy so I don't know where she got that idea.

If Julie doesn't mention the pony tonight I'm going to be VERY upset.... Very.

Posted by: e30mpwrd

Perhaps the pregnancy wasn't Marissa, but before her. A miscarriage would make the timeline work a bit better.

Posted by: jsmeeker

Good episode... It is good to see them develop the adult story lines. I keep saying it will eventually follow the same path 90210 took, but The O.C. has the advantage of starting out with more adults main characters.

The *way* Summer kissed Seth was a bit over the top. He remember some things.. That's sweet and all, and kiss would not be unexpected, but man, she really went after him! (lucky guy!)

Well it was her daughter's best friend after all...

Maybe they have another kid in college? Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they don't exist! ;)

If Jimmy and Kirsten hook up I am out. Then the cheese would be too much.

Just a warning, they aren't rerunning tonight's episode as far as I can tell, so check your Tivo.
