Anyone watch the pilot tonight (Tuesday)? Whatcha think?
Posted by: Satchel
I laughed...I'll keep watching...I cringed when that girl was ghetto talking...but I could see the humor...
Posted by: cello
ick. Exactly the kind of tired sitcom with tired jokes that I'm not looking for. Too bad becaue I like Whoopie Goldberg. Maybe I'll give it another week, just in case it gets better.
Posted by: johnspalm
I liked it. Definitely better than Happy Family, which I thought was very lame.
Posted by: disco
GOD...Happy Family was TERRIBLE! Whoopi was okay..as long as this "I'm PERSIAN, not Arab" joke doesn't continue all series long....

Heh, It got the TV returned....

Whoopi was a bit stale, but I think it just needs to catch its stride. We enjoyed it and actually laughed, which is rare for a pilot. "Happy Family" stank by comparison, but halfway through it started to get a little better. We've got them both SP'ed and will probably drop off HF if it doesn't get better soon.
The ghetto girl was truly awful, but I know a few white women who talk like that. I thought the irony of the black guy being whiter than the white girl was pretty good. Whoopi's facial expressions when the girl was talking were great. The Persian guy is cool, he just needs to find his groove. I like that they're joking about taboo-ish subjects. I think he's a Persian Archie Bunker. :D

She is the only character that I can't stand. I hope she doesn't last in the series. Every time she spoke I just cringed. Whoopi was also a bit over the top at times, especially in how she mockingly reacted to her brother, but, all in all, the show wasn't as bad as all of the horrible reviews I have read.
As for Happy Family... I got about 1/2 way through it last night and just gave up. I haven't deleted it yet, mainly because I will probably watch the rest sometime soon, but I am in no rush. I am hoping it gets better, but at this point, I doubt it. BTW, The Futon Critic gives both of these shows about 9:1 odds for survival. Link to the article on Whoopi, Link to the article on Happy Family.

Ugh ... Ghetto Girl is in the promo pic for Whoopi at that site you linked to. This does not bode well for her leaving the show...

Sometimes you can't judge a show by its pilot. Rewatch the pilots of shows like Seinfeld or Cheers and think of all the classic TV we'd have missed if after the first couple lousy seasons the shows were axed.
I didn't especially like either pilot, and these new shows might very well continue to stink, but sitcoms need a little time to let the characters and situations develop. So much of what was funny about Seinfeld came from knowing the history of characters like George, not just one-liners.

The problem with Whoopie is that it is up against something that has not premiered yet that I am going to watch instead. (Probably Navy NCIS) So I will watch last night's and whatever shows before the new show comes on.
I have heard that the thing that bothered the focus groups the most was Whoopi's smoking. (I hate smoking so being forwarned I will see if this bothers me.)
Posted by: jones07
I have a 3 week watch rule before I pull shows for my weekly line-up ;)
Edit to say. If the show last "The ghetto girl" will grow on ya. ......maybe :p
Posted by: Vox Acerbus
It was a good move to premiere Whoopi early. They are hoping that she'll take hold before something else you might turn to instead. (I have dual-tuner and DTiVo so that won't affect me. :D )
The smoking thing was actually refreshing. I hate smoking but there's a non-PC streak in me that loves watching smokers get all up in arms about it. It doesn't bother me at all, even though the situation I'm watching probably would bother me if I were there. :D
I sure hope that GG doesn't grow on me. She's a bit like a mold.
PS: 3 week watch rule is a good one.

Great. Ethnic Mismatch Comedy #645.
It had some good bits, and I think the Persian guy came close to stealing the show at times, but it's teetering in my book.
The family one with Larroquette and Baranski seemed more likely to tickle me, but I nuked it ten minutes in. It hurt to watch, knowing what each of them can do.
Thanks to the magic of TiVo, if I change my mind later on, the reruns will pour in readily enough, and they'll be new to me.

I really like Whoopi so I hope her show takes off. We laughed quite a bit (even at GG) and found the non-politically correct humor refreshing. I like the idea that GG might be sticking around. That way they break all sorts of stereotypes.

I got a few giggles from it, nothing great though. But thinking about it, it probably rates just about as well as a lot the better sitcoms' pilots. The first show of any sitcom is always the lamest because the actors haven't fully gotten into all of the nuances of their characters. I didn't think this was particuarly great, but still had enough lines in it to make me want to see it again.
Posted by: TIVO_GUY_HERE
I can see why they premired both these shows 1-2 weeks before CBS or ABC will put stuff against it. I know "Pilot" shows are normally not great, so I will keep "whoopie" for 1 more week but sorry not too happy about Happy Family, and I like both the stars. Season pass cancelled on both

I hate Whoopi and don't think she's funny at all so I didn't watch but despite a very slow, unfunny first 15 minutes, Happy Family was pretty funny for the last 15.

I finally watched this last night. Or at least, I watched the first twenty minutes and then deleted it. I just couldn't suffer through the last ten minutes. I like Whoopi Goldberg, so I'll give it a few weeks to see if it gets better.
And I liked GG. I thought that was a hilarious bit.

I haven't watched a comedy show in a while (except Friends), so perhaps my view is a bit jaded. I really enjoyed this episode. It was a pilot, and that makes it tough. Not only do they have to be comedic, but they have to introduce all of the characters as well. I thought that they did a good job of that. This show should have a chance to succeed, because the characters all seem to do their part well (except, perhaps GG, but she'll either get better or get dropped).
And that three-shows rule ... it's great for the shows that you're not sure about, but a true DUD is easy to spot. Don't waste the time.
Posted by: saintpuhn
the show has potential. happy family has none.
Posted by: sieglinde
I haven't watched it yet. The Iranian guy is an actor from Great Britain. I think he is a fairly popular. So yes, he could easily steal the show.
Posted by: Skittles
I really like the show, and must agree with a few people here. Ghetto Girl must GO.
Posted by: cello
(so many positive reviews here, maybe I was in a bad mood when I watched it. As I have been most of this week. Will give it another try :))
Posted by: hookbill
I thought the promos looked promising so I did a SP. Watched the first episode and did not laugh one time.
I'm cancelling the SP. I was very dissapointed.
Posted by: njtaz
The show was alright. I had a couple of laughs.
But why is the shows name called Whoopi if her charachter is not name Whoopi.
Posted by: cello
The same reason The Cosby Show was named as such, even though none of the characters had the last name of Cosby?
Posted by: jamesbobo
I thought Whoopi was OK, but nothing to brag about. I'll keep the season pass for now.
While many people here didn't like Happy Family I think it looks promising and will keep that season pass, too.
Posted by: njtaz
I didn't even think of that one.
But you have Everybody loves Raymond. And the lead character is named Ray.
On Seinfeld you had Jerry Seinfeld.
Oh well nevermind I was just wondering.
Posted by: rasheed
I'm surprised NBC didn't take an opportunity to rerun the pilot. Ratings were very high despite extremely bad critics reviews.
What will happen next week?
Rasheed
Posted by: cello
I heard a promo for a rerun of the pilot, so I believe that they did.
Posted by: doom1701
I can't believe how many people are saying that they like Whoopi Goldberg (is that still her name?). She never struck me as anything but second rate.

Whoopi/Crap Happy Family/Crap
Is it going to be like this all season long?
Posted by: Cabinwood
I didn't really care for either Whoopi or Happy Family, but I'll give them both another try or two. I usually like Whoopi, but so far
Posted by: bvolb
This show really is a pain to watch. To me it seems like the same joke over and over. I am not offended by the racial stuff but any joke loses its steam after being reapeated over and over for a half hour. I'll definately watch Happy Family (another shi**y) show over this.
Sorry Whoopi:(
Posted by: mrs-j
I thought it was pretty funny. I usually don't like Whoopi so I was surprised that I actually laughed. I am giving it another chance tonight.
Happy Family has a SP, but it's in danger of losing it.

Cancel/edit the Season Pass -> Cancel this Season Pass
Sorry, I've given this show two episodes, but the couple funny jokes are eclipsed by too much forced humor. The writers obviously think that non-stop button-pushing is funny. It's not. There's no irony. There's no subtleness. It's just predictable punchlines with little complexity. There have been worse sitcoms, but this one isn't nearly good enough to keep.
Posted by: mrs-j
I chuckled some more tonight. HF bored me. We cancelled HF's SP. We'll be keeping Whoopi around one more episode or so. Forced or not, I like sitcoms that make me laugh. HF just bored me.

I am of the exact opposite opinion. This week just reinforced that I didn't like Whoopi at all, however, I have changed my mind on Happy Family. Episode 2 of HF was not nearly as overacted as the first and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I will give Whoopi one more week, but as long as HF doesn't go downhill from the second episode, it will be a keeper for me.
Posted by: woyton
Sorry, not going to bother with any further Whoopi episodes. And I really like Whoopi Goldberg.
Posted by: johnspalm
The second episode wasn't great, but it still had some laughs. Keeping the season pass here, at least for a while.
I gave up on Happy Family after the first episode.
Posted by: brott
I'm sticking with this show. I think it will take them about 2 more episodes to hit their stride though. I believe all of the ingredients are there to make it funny. I moderately enjoyed the second episode .. I certainly didn't hate it.
Posted by: njtaz
I think Whoopi and Happy Family are going to be conflicting with NAVY NCIS which has to be better than these other two shows. Maybe if they make it i'll catch it in reruns.
Posted by: Leetah
I tried watching the second episode, and again deleted it part way through. Maybe I just don't get sitcoms anymore, but I didn't think it was funny. Next week's episode looks like it DOESN'T have a war theme or political commentary, so maybe I'll like it better. But I won't bother recording it anymore if not.
And I changed my mind on GG. First time was funny. Now it's overkill.

I haven't watched the show yet but since, there is a new show about the NCIS premiering next week, I won't bother with Whoopi. Now I need to get all my equipment back together so I can tape the two Whoopis for a co-worker.
Posted by: tomo_kun
i didnt see the first episode of Whoopi, but the seccond was funny. Actually southpark has my fav. whoopi type thing . it takes place as whoopi hosting the nobel science award. "republicans are so stupid (akward pause) I hate republicans.......... republicans suck....." and it whent on like that for 2 minutes

I didn't watch the show but a co worker did and thought that was hilarious. Simply because I'm Persian and get called Arabic, and I freak out on people when they call me Arabic.

Add me to the Happy Family = Extremely Boring Family with two extremely talented actors.
Whoopi I have always liked, but I am going to cancel also after giving it 4 episodes. It is not looking pretty.
I really don't want to pick up on Navy NCIS as I watch ENOUGH tivo, but if Whoopi doesn't improve lets, see..!! (vamos a ver).

I saw the "unofficial pilot" for Navy NCIS (The JAG episode with Mark Harmon's character and crew) and I have to say, being a big JAG and CSI fan, I will definitely be checking it out. There's no such thing as "enough TiVo" for me and I haven't even gotten mine yet. :)

Ugh.
I just watched the first two shows back to back. It was nothing more than one lame racial stereotype joke after another. The hideously overdone laughtrack didn't help either.
