I have another dumb question, Hindsdale says dont boot into WinXP with your original tivo drive attached, is this becuz of NTFS? if it is I didnt format my drives with NTFS they are still fat 32.So would it be ok?
i may have missed something in the upgrade guide that he has but you dont boot into windows anyway since you are using the boot disk and booting into linux, am I right or am I not understanding the process?
everyone has be so helpful so thanks for any help that anybody can give

Windows XP would write a signature on each hard drive it finds, if you *accidentally* boot into it. That signature would overwrite data on the TiVo drive, rendering it useless.

It only damages the boot block, which you can reconstruct with MakeTiVoBootable, but MTB is quite difficult to use.

If you do happen to boot into windows and damage the Tivo drive, you can still restore a backup image to the drive, correct?

Yes, it just writes a four-byte 'signature' to the boot block. This has no effect on the DOS or NT boot block, but breaks the TiVo one. You can fix it with MakeTiVoBootable or just restore a backup over it.
