Trouble with an upgraded SVR2000

Hi everyone. I've never posted in this part of the forum before, although I've used information here successfully on a number of occasions and am very appreciative.
However I now have a big problem, and I am hoping somebody will be able to help me out.
The threads on the subject are huge, and difficult to wade through, and the search function has been less than reliable of late, so please pardon me for asking for help with something which has no doubt already been covered in detail.
Basically a friend was jealous of our upgraded units, which we did long ago with the original instructions. I came here to get instructions and found the new and improved 2.0 instructions to give him. The problem begins when circumstances discouraged him from making a backup at that time, and he was impatient to have the upgrade and proceeded without. By skipping through the backup section, the part about increasing the swap space was missed. The installation went along without further complications and he made his wife very happy with all the extra recording space. Size does matter after all. ;)
Now his SVR200 has 150 GB total and is displaying the dreaded GSOD. Actually it started to act poorly a week prior, but he didn't bother to mention it to me. The first thing I discover of course upon looking here, is that for over 140GB total storage space (which we don't have, but he does) the standard swap space is not enough to recover from the GSOD. However there are a few suggested work around, but it doesn't seem like any I've found so far will work in this case.
His TiVo does not have TurboNet.
It seems there is little chance of recovering with everything (his shows) intact, unless somebody has ideas I haven't found here yet. Am I missing something?
Is there any chance of at least keeping his setup info and season pass info? For instance, is it possible to do the dual drive backup to divorce the drives, even though it is currently in the mean green state?
Is my only option to just blow away everything and start from scratch with a downloaded image? If so, what exactly do I need to do? It sounds as if I should use the version that was factory installed, but I am not certain which that is. Should I just use the oldest version then? Why wouldn't I want to use the most recent?

I believe 30+120 is OK on a Series 1 stand alone. 140Gb is a rather conservative estimate of a poorly understood (at the time) limit. We now know that the true limit is about 155Gb.
If so, then the GSOD is rebooting because it's hitting bad blocks on the disk, not because it's running out of RAM and should be left to get on with it. You could do the 'rescue' from the third post of the Fixes thread if you like. The indication for that would be that the GSOD reboots every 4 minutes (not sure of the exact time, but it'll be the same every cycle). If it reboots after 4 minutes and at irregular intervals, then it's doing useful work.
If the GSOD completes then you can make a compressed backup and salvage your user data. If the GSOD does not complete then you can try to use dd to copy the whole drive, but I'd be surprised if that worked.
