Record option I would Like to See

I wonder if Tivo has the ability to program a record off of the commercial. Lets say a commercial came on for a episode. I would like to be able to hit a button to have that show recorded. If a person does not have it as a season pass, then it is probably a show that is new or only on once. Instead of taking the time to look it up, it would be nice if the Tivo could recognize the title and time and then schedule the show for record.

There is such a thing. Have you ever used TiVo takes? It works like that. I have only seen it available once (besides TiVo takes), but it is suppose to be expanded to more shows and channels in the future. What happens is, during a commercial for a show, in the bottom corner a little message says press select now. You can press select on thumbs up, and it will record the show for you.

Indeed. But Tivo Takes is not the only place this can be done. Certain Tivo partners also use this part of the service. Currently I believe only NBC and the Starz networks use them. It is a nice thing to get done watching a movie on Starz and have a preview of something come up and just be able to hit the thumbs up key. Wish more channels would use this function. My memory tends to be short, so often times unless I get lucky and tivo records a show as a suggestion I often forget that some stuff is on, even though I go through the channel listings quite often.

Starz is really good about using TiVoMatic icons (which is the name of the feature you're describing). NBC uses them occasionally, but Starz uses them almost all of the time.

One thing that I have a compliant about, though, with the way Starz uses them is that they will often advertise a series of movies in one ad (like a series of movies with the same actor). No matter where in the commercial you hit the TiVoMatic icon, it always only picks up which ever of the movies being advertised is playing next, you have to Search by guide or title to get any other movie off of the ad.

I've noticed commercials for Third Watch usually have the
Tivo "Select" icon. I believe a commercial I saw for
The Fighting Fitzgeralds also had it. I'd think it would
be most useful for new shows (Which Fizgeralds was when I saw
the commercial) and specials and sporting events.

I hope the networks get fairly consistant about using them
when next year's premiere season starts.
