Smallville: So NOW I get it!

So last spring I was wondering about what everyone's fuss over Smallville was about. I'd watched one episode (back in Season 1) and was horribly unimpressed by this Dawson's Creek-as-superhero show. I mean, how much teenage angst can you take, right?
But made curious by the constant running commentary here, I SP'd it over the summer. Hey, there wasn't much else to watch, right?
Surprise, surprise. It's actuallY GOOD (with capitals!) I mean, the Duke Boy aside, the characters are complex and interesting - even the Duke boy. The angst is still there, but not as purely teenager-ish as I'd feared. They're slowly building the relationships and story, and the story builds the characters.
I forgot TV knew how to do this. Besides, Lana is a cutie.
So anyway, I'm looking forward to the last few reruns and next season. Maybe this will finally force me to abandon Enterprise (although it reruns on Saturday, so maybe not).

It's all about Lex.

Favorite part is till the whole "explanation" bit in "Rosetta". Very classy. Won't explain further in case you haven't seen it.

Boy are you on the wrong track. The potential interest in the show is 1) How does Lex go bad? and 2) When will everyone grow the F up?!
The show lost me around episode five or so when Lana said something along the lines of "You're -still- mad about my boyfriend crucifying you? He -apologized- for that!" (paraphrased, of course).
If you're looking for good television, watch "The Wire."

Agreed. That was a good episode.
And although the "random person in Smallville who was exposed to/injected with/inhaling meteor rocks is now super powered and threatening Lana" plots are getting old, it's the fact that we KNOW where things are going while the characters don't is what keeps it interesting. Especially as we don't know HOW they'll get there.
One question, I don't particularly care if someone spoils me. I've seen a few folk mention about how Chloe becomes "evil". I'm pretty familiar with the Superman mythos, but she doesn't click as a character who existed before this show, not like Lana, Pete, etc. The writers clearly futzed around with the mythology - hence Lex in Smallville - but is she supposed to be a previously existing character?

No, she's original to the show.
The "Chloe becomes evil" speculation is based on her actions in the last episode or two of last season, where she throws in with Lionel against Clark.

(1) There are two pretty distinct versions of Superman's child/teen years in the comics. "Smallville" is a union of the two visions, with some new bits and pieces added for good measure :)
(2) Chloe was created for the TV series. The bit about her "becoming evil" started at the end of Season 2 ("Witness," which just repeated on Tuesday). It has been revealed (through interviews with Ms. Mack) that the moral struggle will be an ongoing issue for season 3.

Believe it or not. I never watched one episode of Smallville.
1) Is it to late to get into this serials ? Or is it like Farscape come in to late and you are screwed ?
2) Are there DVD's for season one & two.
3) Why Smallville ?
What a name for a show about S-Man in his youth. One reason this one past me by :(

1. I think you could probably jump in at any time. You'd probably get more out of it if you'd seen the previous shows, but it's not like Alias where you'd be totally lost if you haven't.
2. DVDs for Season One will be released on September 23rd. No word yet on Season Two.
3. Smallville is the name of the town where Superman grew up.

On the whole Chloe discussion...
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
The producers have said at a couple of conventions that she is Lois Lanes cousin. But its never been mentioned on the show.

I believe that on Sunday's they'll be showing repeat episodes from Season 1 and maybe Season 2 - called Smallville Beginnings. If you jump in to this season, you can record those to get caught up on the back story.

I remember in the comics there being a girl who worked on the school paper that had a crush on Cark Kent. (This was in the Superboy comics.)

"Duke Boy" is one of the best parts of the show.
And there are a lot of great parts of this show.

I watched the entire first season. I loved the parts when Clark used his powers. The bad thing was that he only used his powers for 5 minutes per episode. The rest was just Dawson's Creek.
Does the show still follow this formula?? When the show gets more action, I'd start watching again in a second.

I have to agree 100% with JohnJohn. This show is ALL about the Lex. His character is the only one who actually has a story to tell.
His transformation from his current character to the Lex Luthor of the comics is where the real story is. After all, the way they play Clark currently you can practically give him the cape and spandex.
As a semi spoiler: In the comics Lana does actually marry a regular on the show. Pete.

All jokes aside, I agree, although at times Pa Kent does overact a bit. He plays a very important role in Clark's moral development which is of course necessary for him to become the Superman of lore.
And that's what's really interesting about the show. All the characters appear to have a direct impact on Clark in ways that would lead him to develop the characteristics seen in the adult Superman. Pete - loyalty, Ma and Pa - morality, Lex - learning to not put all your cards on the table, even with your friends, Lana - you gotta watch out for the ones you love, Chloe - his interest in reporting.
In fact, the idea of him serving as a school reporter because he's friends with Chloe is ingenious. I always scoffed at the flimsy excuses in the movies/comics why Clark was a reporter: so he'd know the news as it happened. It always seemed that Superman could find out about bad stuff by flying around and using superhearing rather than waiting to hear about things over the police band. Now, his interest makes sense.

I actually started to get frustrated with the seemingly cyclical relationship between Lana and Clark. Everytime they get close to getting together, something comes up, and they push away, and then slowly work back towards it. Lather, Rinse, repeat.

Season 2 Pa Kent is much better than season 1.
For a while he's going around with a huge chip on his shoulder and a "everything sucks" attitude. That didn't do it for me at all. But once he lost that and became "Pa Kent" he ruled.
I really like his character.

anyone know the details re: "Smallville: Beginnings" re: air date and title? 'Smallville' is the only thinh my DTivo picks up, and it just has the last two episodes of season airing Tuesdar or Wednesday night. No 'Smallville: Beginnings' shows us in the 'Search by Title'. My guide date goes thru 6 PM CST on Sunday, September 28, so perhaps they start aiirng on that Sunday and not the 21st?
