The OC - "The Escape" (May Contain Spoilers)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well, they did it. I'm hooked. The best quote of the episode?

It appears after losing her virginity that Marrisa has now declared, "I hate ding-dongs!" (Out of context but funny)

Posted by: PeteEMT

Wow, is killing a main character a new trend?

Posted by: njtaz

How smart is she? Taking drugs and chasing them down with alcohol. All because her pretty boyfriend was cheating on her. C'mon!

Now we have to wait over a month to see what happens. She has to come through OK right? She is one of the main characters not to say they still wouldn't kill her off, but I have a hard time believing they would do that.

Future spoilers...

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Of course Marissa survives, but possibly gets put into an institution of some kind in the future.

Posted by: jsmeeker

Of course she is gonna live.... Like you say, she a main character. She is the show's hottie..

Posted by: njtaz

Don't forget about Summer. She's a hottie too.

And the best line was:

After seeing Summer!

Seth : This is going to be awesome!
Dad : She's hot stuff, son.
Seth : And now it's ruined!

Well you had to be there! ;)

Seth's delivery is what makes that line. He is guaranteed to crack me and the wife up at least twice an ep.

Oh - and how come the girls I went to TJ with never packed negligee to sleep in when we crashed at scummy motel rooms? I missed out.

I may have to add Summer to the Faith/Vamp Willow dreamteam....

Mmmmmm.....Faith....Vamp Willow.....Summer.....mmmmmmm

Don't know if you were watching but in the last few weeks she's had her "perfect" world unravel. Obviously no one should commit suicide, but I think you're missing 9/10 of the reasons that lead her to do it.

- Her father was punched out and exposed as a thief to the entire community (At her debutante ball!)

- She fell in love with Ryan

- Her boyfriend got shot

- She chose Ryan and then saw him getting it on with a hot chick

- She then ran off and lost her virginity to Luke

- She then got a phone call to tell her her father wasn't going to be at home when she got back

- The next day found out her boyfriend screws anything that moves

- PLUS you don't want to get me started on what a bitch her mom has been to her.

I think that's a lot for a sheltered girl who was raised in a naive and sheltered sort of perceived "perfect" life, and has been inundated with the fact that life is really the exact opposite. Luke was sort of a "straw that broke the camel's back."

And, OF COURSE she lives!

Oh i've watched all teh episodes and have seen what is going on. Yes she has had a tought time with Jimmy stealing and possibly having to go to jail. Her parents divorcing. Her pretty boy boyfriend cheating on her. Her mother being a bitch. But does that make it OK to go start downing alcohol after taking some pills? Or does it just make for good TV.

Like I said, no one should commit suicide, but I could believe that she would contemplate it.

Yeah.. But she isn't even featured in the show's opening. This makes Marissa the top hotie.

Some times Seth goes overboard with the comedy but "And now it's ruined!" was just great.

Unlike Everwood, The OC will wimp out on what happened (is going to happen) in this episode.

Of course she may contemplate it, but attempting is a big leap from contemplating. However, at the time, I guess she was really screwed in the head... I just don't see the reaction being that extreme in real life. But, I was never in her exact situation, so I can't say for sure.

There were some great lines in this episode. My favorite part of this episode, though, was when Summer and Seth are eating breakfast together... The tandem eating/reading was great :D They are so compatible in so many ways that it is scary, yet she just wants to play the part of the bit**. I wonder how long that act will go on.

It seems that toward the end of the episode that she was really starting to come around. Eventually diving into Seth's arms at the end of the episode.

Well other then my severe disappointment in no Julie mentioning the pony again... a good episode.

Slightly predictable up to the suicide attempt (non-spoiler opinion: she can't be dead, she just got a neutragenia endorsement deal) which was a slight surprise.

The breakfast sequence with Seth and Summer was totally classic. Loved it. But it makes me wonder what will happen if the cool chick from the coming out party comes back.

When Kelly tells them that Luke has been screwing around all over town-- the only thing that would have made that better was if Marissa kicked him in the stones.

Sandy going to work for some big time law firm. Hmmm... was this planned or did they think they needed him to get involved in stuff other then around the house and the occational scene in his office? Perhaps they didn't want people to ask "well, he brought the one kid home why isn't he bringing others too?"

Great episode, but I have two issues with it.

First off, what happened to the Range Rover? Seth just brought it home trashed beyond recognition, and suddenly it's parked in the driveway good as new. Even if they just bought a new one, shouldn't Seth have some explaining to do - either to his parents or the insurance company? Didn't he say it happened in a movie parking lot? I thought that was going to lead to some sort of legal action storyline....

Secondly - when the four of them were in the seedy motel, there is no way Summer would have allowed Seth in the same bed. She and Marissa would have shared the bed and made the boys sleep on the couch.

I liked Summer's line that "80 is the new 70."

On reflection, perhaps the Range Rover is a self healing car like Christine. After all, the axle got fixed in the middle of nowhere overnight!

The dad (Sandy) called the insurance company (actually, he said he was going to) the morning after it was trashed.

Yeah, I didn't think that was very realistic either but, if it wasn't fixed, how would Marissa have caught Luke

As for Sandie working for a big law firm, I don't really know where they are going with that. I liked the idea that he was a public defender, but then again, he says that this way he can do more pro-bono work... although somehow I think that this won't be the case and that he will end up with some kind of moral issue to deal with at the new firm... only time will tell. It is too bad we have to wait until October 30th for a new episode :(

Maybe, maybe not. I posted this in the other thread:

Retyped excerpts from the original article in the LA Times:

Fox had originally announced that the show would come back Oct. 30 in the treacherous 9 pm. Thursday hour ruled by CBS' "CSI" and NBC's "Will & Grace". Since then, however, executives have begun reevalutating the notion of pitting their emerging hit against a proven juggernaut (CSI). At this point, then, the show's producers and fans must wait to see what the network decides. Fox plans to promote "The O.C." heavily during the baseball postseason.

Also regarding Seth & Summer sleeping in the same bed. Of course the writers had to write it that way. Any other way would have just been too realistic and boring! ;)

I have a theory that most tv shows and movies are written by guys who weren't successful with girls when they were young. Now they are in a position to act out their fantasies in their shows.

She didn't really have a choice. She did protest, but Seth wasn't leaving. I don't see why this is unbelievable.

Since they were all sharing one room, she would have made sure the sleeping arrangements were worked out the second they got into the room rather than wait until bedtime.

How do you know? Have you met her? Did you know that this is a fictional work on television and not real life? Since these fictional people only live in the writers minds I guess this is all fairly meaningless, if not sad and pathetic, conjecture.

I love how people can suspend disbelief on some things and not others. I remember my girlfriend telling me something, didn't really make enough impact to make me remember what it was, Mary Jane did in the Spiderman movie was unrealistic. I then pointed out the guy in spandex flying from buildings by shooting spider webbing from his wrists was slightly unrealistic too. :D

I'll give Summer a call and get her input! :D

Seriously though, lots of things about the show are unbelievable, but from watching that episode, the car and sleeping arrangements just stood out as blatant plot devices. If two girls were travelling with two guys who they basically wanted nothing to do with, do YOU think that the girls would share beds with them? Marissa may have been too distracted to care, but Summer is all business and never would have let that happen. That's all I was saying.

Trust me, my disbelief is not suspended at all when watching TV, those were just two things that I saw as worth pointing out. More interesting to consider than how Marissa's purse magically appeared next to her in the alley when she had been shown stumbling around without it just moments before.

Posted by: mrpayroll

Well that last part was just a continuity error! ;)

I was so worried about her leaving her purse behind that when I saw it next to her in the alley I was relieved to the point that the lack of continuity didn't bother me in the least. I was just glad to know we wouldn't be subjected to any identity theft episodes in the future.

I was relieved that she had the purse because I thought they would copy 90210 and have her get stuck in Mexico without a passport. Of course, either of these scenarios still could happen since when Ryan picked her up, the purse was left lying on the ground.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the (almost) kiss hello between Sandy and his lawyer friend. I immediately thought that maybe they once had something going on. Then I realized that Sandy has worked for the DA for 15 years. Since Seth is at least 15 he's been with Kirsten longer than that. Does anyone think that maybe they did have something going on while he was married to Kirsten?

I think that Sandy is a bit of a goody two shoes. He's the only character who hasn't pissed me off in some way. It's obvious that Kirsten is going to end up with Jimmy at some point so maybe Sandy and his fling from the past will be the reason why.

The probable reason this hasn't been mentioned yet is because it's so obvious it goes without saying.

Actually I think Sandy worked for the public defenders office. And I think they even said that they faced off against each other in court.

Posted by: TiVo Rox

That's right. They mentioned that early in their careers they faced off frequently and did seem to know each other very well. She said she moved on to bigger and better things but he stayed put. Time for you to rewatch it! :D

So did he wind up turning the offer to work at the big law firm down? Or did he not make up his mind yet?

He took the job.

Whoa... was I too busy looking for mention of the Pony?

There was some 'snappy banter' between them but I didn't think anything of it except they were friendly rivals.

Now that someone has mentioned it... yeah, i guess this is the "Last Temptation of Sandy" storyline coming up here--- the babe-lawyer and the corupt job will tempt him. Oh well--- hate to see such obvious storylines telegraphed so far ahead.

Oh, speaking of the Pony--- I saw Melinda Clark on a rerun of CSI the other night as Mistress Heather. I got the feel she would be a recuring character there... kind of adds a whole new dimension to Julie, doesn't it?

Maybe she DOES have a job--- Maybe she uses another name. Hmmmmmm---- :D

FOX Reconsiders Moving 'The O.C.'
(Friday, September 19 11:11 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The success of "The O.C." this summer is making FOX think twice about throwing it into one of television's toughest timeslots when it returns in late October.

As things stand, "The O.C." -- which ended a seven-week run on Tuesday nights this week -- is scheduled to move to 9 p.m. Thursdays starting Oct. 30. It's going on hiatus while FOX airs the major league baseball playoffs and World Series.

However, Peter Chernin, president and COO of News Corp., the network's parent, told attendees at a Banc of America conference Thursday (Sept. 18) that the network is reconsidering that strategy, Reuters reports.

"We're actually going through some debates right now," Chernin said. "We'll probably make that decision in the next week or so."
The network is wary of putting "The O.C.," which added viewers nearly every week of its summer run, up against CBS' "CSI," the top-rated show on television, and NBC's "Will & Grace," a Top 20 hit. Yet there are few obvious places where the show could land.

FOX's top-rated drama, "24," is scheduled to return to its 9 p.m. Tuesday spot -- where "The O.C." aired during the summer -- on Oct. 28. Another new drama, "Skin," won the 9 p.m. Monday spot, and the network shipped "Boston Public" to Fridays.

Chernin acknowledges that with NBC's hit "Friends" ending this season, FOX might be able to make inroads on Thursdays.

"We've got to attack Thursday," he says. "We think Thursday is wide open next year when 'Friends' goes off the air."

Chris

I think it would be a perfect match on Thursday nights... I'm tired of Will and Grace and never watched CSI because it is the kind of show I have never liked...
