Babylon 5 query

I've seen a few eps of B5 over the years, but never got into it enough to catch a full season. Recently I saw the "Sleeping in Light" finale and noticed that Delenn looked pretty much human. In earlier years, she was bald and had a serious brow extension.
What caused her transformation?

You can find your answer and a bit of typical TC tomfoolery over here at this thread!

Ok ok, I'm feeling givey. Here is the episode where it begins.
The fact that you never saw Delenn after this means you gave up just a bit early. You would do yourself a service to check it out. If you have even a modest interest in science fiction, the next three seasons (2-4) are quite a ride in television story telling.
Of course, its not quite Buffy, but hey...

Have you tried a great site called THE LURKERS GUIDE? It is great!:D

Thanks for that link. That clears it up somewhat. And, now I've also read that basically the plot was a contrivance just so that Mira Furlan wouldn't have to under go such a lengthy makeup session every day.

Not so much that I gave up on it as wasn't able to watch consistently enough to keep up. I worked nights for about 25 years, (and this was in the dark days BT [Before TiVo], so I missed a bunch. :)
I saw bits and pieces of the Shadow Wars and other events, then Sinclair was gone and Sheridan showed up, and I saw a few eps with Chekov and Tracy Scoggins, [Yum], but this wasn't a show you could watch casually then catch up.
As a matter of fact, I just recently added a B5 SP to my second TiVo, but since my prime TiVo has 2X120 GB HDs, (with some unwatched cliff hangers from last Spring on it), and just added a Panny E-80 DVD recorder, I don't if I'll ever have a chance to ever catch up. :)

That's an urban legend. In fact, the new make-up took much longet to apply; weith the old one, they just slapped a helmet on, but the new one was a blend of make-up and Mira Furlan.
I believe the reason they changed it was because they figured the romance between Delenn and Sinclair (changed to Delenn and Sheridan for obvious reasons) wouldn't have been as, well, romantic with her looking so alien.

I seem to recall that farther back in the development, Delenn was going to be more male than female before the transformation, but they found it too difficult and costly to post-process her voice, so they dropped that part of the thread.

I dunno. I read that info here:

That stuff supposedly comes from JMS himself, yes? But, I'm only familiar with her look at the beginning and the one from "Sleeping in Light." There may have also been transitional makeup phases in between.

What was the deal with that huge barrette anyway? Was that supposed to be functional or just decorative?

RGM1138, I think you've misunderstood the reference. The Minbari in the pilot of B5 looked different from the ones in the actual series. THAT is what the question is referring to, not the Minbari/Human transformation.
I always had a problem with the huge barette myself. It looks like the bone ridge that the bald Minbari have but it covers her hair. I don't know if it was something she wore or it was part of her head and the hair just grew around it that way. Sentimentality?

[Carson] Ah. I did not know that. [/Carson] Yeah, I'm not as well versed in B5 as I would be in, say Trek TOS, or SG-1 even. Besides, all Minibars look alike to me. :)

I wonder if she got HBO on that thing. :)
And, while I'm in wonder-mode, what's up with the communicators? Were they imbedded in their hands or could they take them off at night?
If not, it must get prickly showering with one of those things on.

Yeah, there's another JMS story somewhere about how people always think the new make-up (i.e., the half-human job) would be easier to apply than the full Minbari job, when in fact it was just the opposite.

They could take them off -- in fact, they do at many times during the show.
People sometimes objected that no one would use them because, no matter how well the technology advanced, they couldn't make them so they'd stay stuck on and not pull out the hairs on the back of the hand. Of course, the actual props, made using modern technology, did stick on all day long, and didn't pull the hairs out of the backs of the actor's hands. But I guess in the 250 years to come, some things will be forgotten...

I am not going to go look it up but yes, I was always under the impression that it was the remnants of her ridge, it developed a gap in the transformation and her hair grew through it. I suppose something had to be left to clearly indicate her "mixture".
I used to have a series of pictures that were supposed to be the original concept sketches, never was sure if they were authentic but I will see if I can find them and put them in the thread.

Watch B5 from the beginning starting next week.
If you pay attention, all your questions will be answered. :)

FWIW, the first three seasons are out on DVD. That might be a better way to catch up than trying to do it via TiVo.
YMMV.

I had 60 of my favorite episodes saved on TiVo and watched them all over a 3 week period. Very intense. I saved the top 21.
