Survivor 9/18 (spoilers)

As soon as I saw the tie-die shirt, I liked Rupert. I don't think he can win it, but he's definitely going to keep things interesting.

And it seems like these two teams are really outmatched right now. Drake seems to be a much better team. So I guess that means someone from Morgan is going to win this year. ;)

Posted by: mrs-j

Drake is doing really well and as a team I like them a lot more. They're a lot more likeable with Rupert (Hagrid) and the blonde girl (who I call Phoebe).

I loved that Rupert basically stole Morgan's fancy shoes and bartered them for things. I thought that was terrific! And Sandra! (I think that's her name.) The woman who spoke Spanish - she's a valuable woman to have around. They did really well!

This was one of the most interesting first episodes I have seen. I thought that the boys of Morgan taking off their boxer shorts during the challenge were just crazy!

you got to LOVE THE DRAKE!!!

Yep, I thought that that was great!

Yeah, that was just weird. I sounded like they planned that, and then came up with an excuse during the challenge to make it sound like they had a good reason. Weird. Maybe they're looking for a Playgirl spread. :D

What a bunch of d*cks!

Posted by: David Platt

Best moment of the night: after the Morgan guys drop their shorts, a caption right appeared right underneath one of the guy's butts describing the status of the team:

"Morgan behind."

And the Survivor hottie award definitely goes to Michelle.

Rupert stealing the other tribes shoes and then bartering them for other items was fricking classic.

But I have to wonder if the were a little overzealous about it. What was up with the girl using palm fronds for shoes? Did they maybe sell the wrong pair of shoes?

And I gotta agree with Rupert. There is nothing more annoying than 2 type A personalities who think they run the show.

No, she said she was sick and tired of wearing wet tennis shoes and wanted them to dry out.

Posted by: brott

I must admit, the buy-what-you-need first episode was much more entertaining than most of the previous seasons first episodes. We didn't have to sit through 30 minutes of these yahoos trying to make a fire. :) I feel like I've "met" these teams much earlier than in the past.

Posted by: cello

Wow, what an excellent episode! I was already rooting for Drake before the episode, based on the fact that I really liked Rupert and Christa's online profiles. Now they're even better in my book. Morgan is just... annoying. I do like Ryan S on Morgan, though. He seems like an interesting and down to earth guy. Too bad he's set up to be so close to the chopping block...

I just about had a heart attack when Morgan almost won the challenge. For once I'm determined to have someone I like win this thing!

I really like the way they started the season. Truly more survival-like than past seasons. I just wish that the unavoidable (even with tivo, because I can't skip a pre-season survivor commercial) commercials didn't give away the big clothes-on-your-back twist.

One thing I'm wondering about: when did they get the boats? They had to be able to travel to get to the challenge, and then Morgan travelled by boat to TC.

Posted by: IndyJones1023

The boats were probably waiting at their destination beaches. Which is probably also how they knew where to come ashore.

That and the prominently displayed Survivor team flag :)

I figured that was the most likely expalanation, but I was confused because I thought they were told that there would be nothing waiting for them at the beaches. I thought maybe there was a more interesting story of the boats that they cut out for time purposes.

Posted by: Redleg

I agree, this was one of the best first episodes of the series. Cool setting and theme, interesting personalities, and a really great way to start things off -- with the clothes on their backs. Interesting that no one on either team thought to buy or barter for shorts or T-shirts or anything.

Seeing how raggedy they all look after just three days, I'll be surprised if they don't get some clothes one way or another from the producers, though. At least some "extra-large" buffs for Osten to make a Rupert-skirt. They looked kind of ridiculous at that tribal council.

Posted by: David Platt

I really had a problem with the immunity challenge last night-- it was setup pretty unfairly. Drake did all the work clearing all the debris out of the way to get their cannon across the section with all the rocks, then Morgan followed right behind them on their coattails.

They really should have had two separate tracks so that they both had to clear stuff.

I loved his logic. Well, we're supposed to be kinda like pirates. Pirates plunder stuff. So ...

Yes, no wonder Drake was so tired once they got onto the beach. Actually, I think that Drake should have had a couple of the physically weaker team members stay behind. Slow down Morgan by walking very very very slowly right in front of them.

Of course, it it were two parallel tracks, I could see them throwing rocks and logs onto the other team's tracks, instead of onto the side of the path. That could have lengthened the challenge considerably. Hard to get anywhere if your path is being pelleted with stones as fast as you're trying to remove them!

I saw that too! I had to pause and laugh.

After Osten made part of that rock wall fall, I thought, "They'll need to find a new place." I couldn't believe they continued to build their shelter there. The morons had rocks falling on them all night long. The hermit crabs up the dress was really funny.

Posted by: TampaThunder

I was disappointed that the Morgan team finally figured out that the location of the water well was marked on the map. It would have been nice to see them drink that orange stuff they were collecting then there would have been a lot of "running" around. :p

Posted by: TheDewAddict

I agree, great episode! I'm really looking forward to the rest of this season.

One thing that bugged me, whenever they would show a shot of the team flags, it always looked like the actual team name was part of a patch that was added to the flag later. I've never seen this before. Did they maybe change the name of the teams right before filming, and not have enough time to make new flags?

Posted by: acropolis

I too really enjoyed this episode. I do find the abundence of middle-class middle-management white guys confusing (Andrew, Ryan O., Burton, Shawn). And Jon has got to go...

Posted by: Fleegle

That was the best first episode of Survivor since the first one. I absolutly love Rupert. He's gonna be a power in this show. Mostly because he'll be able to bond with his teammates because of the work he does.

I think the twist with the clothes makes them look exactly how the producers wanted them to look: Like castaways. I think it's a great twist, but I'm willing to bet that one of the reward challenges will be for a set of clothes for the team.

Posted by: cello

It was great to see them bonding over the clothing alterations. Some nice creativity there. I love that Rupert is happy wearing a skirt. What a cool team

I know what you mean about the "survival" Lord of the Flies look. But these clothes just simply won't hold up much longer. For crying out loud, was Osten wearing a jacket liner at tribal council?

There will be a clothing rewaRd challenge. Of course the clothes will be by REEBOK. Expect the reward clothing to look something like a NASCAR driver's firesuit, with VISA and MOUNTAIN DEW and COORS all over them. For that matter, A&F got some nice free placement on Osten's drawers... then again, they were falling off.

I'm sure the last thing Burnett wants is for the show to turn into Survivor Nude, LOL.

Agree with everybody about Rupert. But he was one of the most prominent cast members featured, so I'm sure he'll be gone pretty soon.

I'm betting that it's their personal items that will be up for a reward challenge.

Too bad Nicole had to go. I would have love have seen more of her and Tijuana getting it on later. By the way, who the hell names their kid after a dump of a city like Tijuana???

Posted by: Captain Video

I also thought this was a good start to the new season. This series needs some life and some fresh ideas and I thought they came through in this opener.

I am guessing that the chance to get some clothes and other items from your luggage will be a reward at some future challenge.

And speaking of twists this season...

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)

Other boards have reported that one of the players voted off gets a chance to come back into the game at a later date by winning a challenge among all the players voted off to that point.

It would be nice to see some surprises liven up this show this season, and they seem to be up for it.

Posted by: youbetcha

Just chiming in to echo everyone else's thoughts on a great first episode. I loved seeing the guy in the Armani suit jumping off the boat, then making cutoffs out of his pants.

Jon was very obnoxious - maybe you should save some of the liquor for another nite.

The wandering around looking for water was ridiculous - haven't they ever watched Survivor before - they always include the water hole on the map.

Seeing Lillian in her scout uniform drives me crazy for some reason.

Why would Nicole draw attention to herself by trying to start a campaign to get Tijuana voted off. Keep a low profile people!!!

Posted by: LooseWiring

The thing that pissed me off the most was Morgan's complete and utter lack of intelligence.

I can't believe they left the town with that much of their cash left. And they put almost NO thought into what they were buying. Individual water bottles? What crack-pipe were they smoking?

At least Ryan(skinny nerd Ryan) noticed that it was a stupid idea to leave town with money left over.

Yeah, every time she showed up, I flashed back to that whack-job in [Florida?] who showed up for jury duty in a Starfleet uniform...

I love this show. Far and away the best first episode yet. And the knives are already out! Usually, the first couple of Tribal Councils, everybody's mournful about having to kick somebody out, but this time they were already ready to vote at least THREE people out! Morgan is not a bunch of happy campers...

And when Rupert "pirated" the shoes, I almost fell out of my recliner laughing. I just wish they'd shown the reactions of his victims.

Maybe they didn't even notice with all the running around they were doing...

I don't think they did notice. They hit the ground running and never looked back. What was the hurry anyways?

I wouldn't be so sure that it was free. The trend lately has been to require contestants on these types of show to either not wear labeled clothing or the producers will blur out or physically tape over the logo. While it probably was not planned--I wouldn't be surprised if CBS approached A&F and asked if their wanted to pony up a few bucks for some in your face product placement.

I think they were in a hurry to get the shopping done and get back to the island with enough time to setup camp before sunset. Which I think is a legitimate concern, given that they probably didn't know how long it would take to get from where they were to their island. But yeah, stopping and devising a group plan would have been the intelligent thing to do. Haste makes waste!

That was funny! And obviously intentional since every time before that it was "Morgan trailing".

Was Morgan the team with the guy that went looking for the boat right away? "Umm, I don't have any money or a map to where I'm going. How much for a ride pretty much anywhere?" Great plan.

Posted by: cello

yup, that was them

finding and pricing the boats wasn't a terrible plan in general, but if he had consulted with his teammates maybe someone else would have thought that bringing the map would be smart...

Yeah, I thought that was pretty dumb too.

Darn that Survivor for reeling me in again. I caught the first season, and skipped the rest due to the Friends conflict. Now I gotta juggle with them again. And no, I don't have two Tivos or DTivos (I'm so deprived :( ).

Did anyone else think that Jon (?) looked like Owen Wilson? And the chick with the glasses looks really familiar too. I swear she's been on a previous season or some other reality show...

Posted by: omnibus

Well it looks like "DRAKE" ain't gonna starve.

They might grow gills, but they won't starve.

Posted by: Ruth

I really liked this one too. The last couple seasons I've watched I found really disappointing -- last season I even took a Survivor break and didn't watch any of it, but I have really high hopes for this one. I liked the purchasing stuff in town -- I liked the idea that they would have to do something a little more in the "real world" that would actually have some consequences in the game. Especially becuase it was hilarious to see the difference between how well the two teams did. Do you think they deliberately put all the morons in the Morgan tribe? That was the most ineffective thing I have ever seen. It was hilarious. And Rupert gets a big  from me, too. Hope he sticks around for a while!

Posted by: DancnDude

I can't say much more than has already been said. It was a great first episode!

I just hope that Rupert doesn't work *too* hard because that could also get him into trouble. It may seem like he is trying to take control of all the food gathering and they could vote him out.

Posted by: Mikkel_Knight

How 'come nobody is commenting on next weeks previews??

looks like Rupert goes bananas snapping the barb off of the fishing spear... that ain't gonna be good in future tribal councils...

Posted by: mrboo

I liked the 1st episode too.

Some observations:

I see the name "Tijuana" and hear Tijuana (as in Mexico) in my head for some reason. Si!

I can't sort out any of the personalities except for Rupert (or blackbeard, or wook or whatever his nickname ends up being). BTW, how do you make a living being a teen "mentor"?

I'm always amazed at Survivor's production values. The cinematography (or video-ography) is always stunning and so clear. That said, I found the lighting during the tribal council to be nearly in the dark. I could barely make out Probts' face.

Why does Probst act like such a tough guy? Always with the swagger and the hands on the hips. Can you believe he gets over a million dollars a year for 12 weeks of work? That's 6 weeks of location work twice a year and that's it. (source: Howard Stern Show interview).

I cannot stand the tribal council interviews. They're so lame. It's like everyone is on a job interview. No one is ever honest and all we get is shots of peoples internal reactions...I always speed through it and straight to the vote.

I don't think the survivors have it as rough this year. Tropical weather, plenty of food, and the drinking water doesn't appear to be that hard to reach.

And, since I just posted about two shows I hated, I must enter this thread to say,

Loved it, loved Rupert and Sandra. Excellent beginning, and what everybody else who liked it said. :)

Posted by: TiVoOpsMgr

Arrrr, the fine Survivor pirate theme and it being Talk Like A Pirate Day this day make for a fine match, me hearties. Rupert's pirate heart did his team proud. If only there were more keelhaulin' and walking of planks! And as for Jon: Stick 'im in a longboat til he's sober. That snap of a lad can't hold his rum, methinks. Arrr!

Can't want 'til they get to the immunity necklace, this being set in the Pearl Islands and all. ;)

Best Survivor opener ever.

Posted by: DreadPirateRob

Great Ep.

Loved the "Morgan Behind" bit. Had to pause and rewind so the wife could get it (she's a little slow). Also loved Rupert's plunder.

Although I was glad Nicole got the boot, I was kind of hoping she'd stick around a few eps. After all, how much abuse can a strapless cocktail dress take before it completely disintegrates? Inquiring minds want to know!!

And Michelle (cute student chick with glasses) is definitely this year's Survivor Hottie. She may be the first one since Elizabeth (from S:Australia) to really do it for me...

Posted by: DreadPirateRob

Oh yeah. Ann - I like the new avatar. You're hot!!!

Posted by: ccouger

I thought, why don't they buy some shorts or pants for these women to put on under their dresses because they're going to have to do these physical immunity challenges wearing these skimpy things! I thought the women themselves would have suggested it or made that a priority, so that makes me wonder about this season's crop of Survivor women. Or even warm (long-sleeved) shirts for everyone for night time! No one on either team made that choice.

Can someone answer this for me? Why do they not show Survivor in HD????

This drives me nuts. With the National Geographic like shots they somehow pull off, I am so disappointed it's not broadcast in Hi-Def!

I think they use hand held digital cameras in order to run and shoot. Hi-def cameras would probably be prohibitive to the shoot.

Professional grade digicams are avaible in HD, I just think they want it to look a bit primitive for atmosphere. Anyway, since I don't have no stinkin HD, I like it the way it is! <vbg>

Posted by: pmyers

I absolutely loved this episode but I was furiated by the immunity challange. Basically...whoever was in the lead was at a disadvantage because they had to do all the work. The only thing that Drake could have done was to move the rocks from in front of their cannon to directly back, but that would have been a LOT of work. They really should have had them run it on two seperate courses or at least courses side by side.

Also, how stupid of it was for Morgan to leave the village with extra money? The lack of a real water jug will come back to haunt them. I thought Drake did an AWESOME job in the market with Rupert's pirating and the other girl being able to speak spanish.

Here's to a great season!

Posted by: TreborPugly

I was amazed that Morgan took so long to realize they had a water supply on their map. Don't these people watch Survivor? They always provide a reliable source of water. If they didn't do that, they'd end up with dead contestants.

Can you imagine being the camera guy following those idiots around as they look up and down a beach for a water supply, considering puddles of stagnant water? Maybe Morgan only caught on when the camera man was trying to get a meaningful shot of the map sitting unused... (didn't see a shot like this, but they often do that when a tribe is screwing up)

Oh, but the individual water bottles aren't such a lame purchase. They are good, rugged drinking utensils. It will let people carry a short-term water supply, and it looked like they cut some in half for open cups. (they drank the coconut juice out of the bottom of one I think. And the size of it indicates they might have been smart enough to cut it half way, so the top half can also be a cup, with the cap on, or serve as a funnel for filling other bottles.

The scout uniform was pretty lame. Scout uniforms do make for good out-door clothes, but she's gotta know that a female Boy Scout leader is gonna draw extra attention. The only female leaders I ever saw were for Cub scouts, where it was just the mom of one of the boys running a weekly gathering.

And I just loved that Rupert (Hagrid!) was wearing his "dress Jeans."

Treb.

Posted by: cello

But she had no idea she would be wearing the scouts uniform on the island, for the entire length of the show!

Posted by: pmyers

Frankly I would have handled the barter/trade thing entirely different. I would have STARTED with the price of the boat ride and then worked backwards. That way you could spend everything you needed but the money for the boat ride. I also would have put one person in charge of the actual buying....then again I would have probably been the first to get voted off for trying to take charge of the situation ;)

Posted by: cello

That's what the guy from Morgan tried to do, but he wasn't smart enough to bring the map with him, so he could actually price the trip!

Posted by: KRS

I may be alone here, but I thought that Rupert's plundering was a risky move. What will happen to him when the tribes come together and word gets out. He did have to tell a few people when he was handing out the shoes to trade. I can picture people voting against him because "he stole my shoes."

Not that they didn't deserve to have them stolen, I just think that it might come back to haunt him (if he lasts that l;ong). While he is a bit of a fan favorite right now, he was a bit too blatant about the food gathering role and seems a bit of a hothead.

Perhaps he will get away with it - lots of dum dums this season!

Probst looked haggard. Too much time in the sun. Jeff, you need to up the SPF!

Posted by: pmyers

I too am worried that Rupert's time is going to be limited....he seems to be getting a LOT of airtime....and that usually isn't a good thing so quick in the game.

Posted by: IJustLikeTivo

quote:

I'll give you that but the thing that bugs me is this. They were just off the plane when they got on the boat for "publicity photos". They had not been given a chance to change, they were travelling in those clothes when they got there. Who wears a uniform/Armani Suit/other odd outfits to travel in? I'd wear a suit on a business trip but not on a trip to god knows where! I'd be more like rupert with the jeans. Very strange people or there is something they left out as to why they had such odd stuff on.

Maybe they did chance after the plane but they sure seemed to indicate that they had not.

Posted by: mrs-j

Actually, Nicole said in an interview that the first she noticed of Rupert's plundering was when the show aired! Apparently Morgan never noticed their fancy shoes were missing in the shuffle. They thought they'd just lost them somewhere.

Also, copious amounts of airtime early on do not automatically mean someone's a goner. I remember thinking that Richard Hatch would surely be voted off early because he was so arrogant and his presence was felt so strongly on the island, and during the first few episodes.

Posted by: sieglinde

I like to travel comfortably so I would have been in jeans and a t-shirt. Jeans are pretty bad wet though. The lady who wore the uniform must be weird but she probably does have the best cloths for the show.

Posted by: cello

I think that Sandra may have to win the luck-out contest with the outfit. Assuming that it's made out of cotton, and not synthetic fibers. It looks like it's loose and breathes well, yet it covers her up and protects from the sun and from insects. And hopefully she can roll up the sleeves (or go the buff tube-top route) and pant legs when its really hot.

Posted by: pmyers

OMG.....did you see those disgusting misquito bites? yikes!

Posted by: DancnDude

I think the guy in the suit lucked out with clothing as well. You could tell that it looked pretty windy and cold at tribal council and I bet he was glad he had that suit coat on. Granted, ruining an expensive suit by jumping in the ocean and living in it for 30 days wouldn't normally be called lucky but he had several layers on and should be able to stay warm and shed clothes to keep cool.

Posted by: Redleg

Maybe they were warned before they left that they'd be going right from the airport to a photo shoot, and to dress accordingly.

Posted by: dthmj

I never recall anywhere it said these people were right off the plane - only they were told they were going to do press photos - so I believe they were able to put on the clothes they wanted the press to see. Nicole in her Early Show interview said she didn't wear a bra because she couldn't zip the dress up because they had all been over eating to prepare for the game. Also from reading the transcript on the smoking gun of the lawsuit from the first season with Stacey - they describe how they are prepared for the game by being given survival lessons (which snakes are poisonous, what food is safe to eat, etc). They just are not allowed to talk to each other. So, I believe they were on location for at least a few days before the "press shoot". I do not think they would take 16 people straight off a plane and maroon them (make good tv, but open them up for lawsuits).

If I was on Survivor, since I am a stay at home mom, and very active in Girl Scouts, I might bill myself as "Girl Scout Leader", and for publicity photos, I probably would wear my uniform - I would have been a mess though - Girl Scout uniforms are dress uniforms - (actually last year they started selling more rugged wear through Lands End) - I have a skirt and sweater for my uniform (more practical than some were wearing out there, but not as good as a Boy Scout uniform).

Posted by: Redleg

I'm pretty sure that in the very beginning, they said something implying they had come right from the plane after the flight from the States. Some kind of comment about a very long day, and being tired... ? Maybe I'm remembering it wrongly.

Nicole said they didn't get much training in her chat:
quote:

Q: Nicole, were you and the others given any sort of education regarding the dangers that awaited you on the island?
N: We were not informed ahead of time but we were informed of what we could and could not eat.

So how did the women not lose those shoes on the swim over, anyway?

That doesn't mean that some survivor can't be annoyed that he "stole their shoes" does it?

I still say that the stealing may come back to haunt him....

Oh, and I'd imagine that the women took them off and threw them into the floaty thing that they were all clinging to.

I'm curious about this now. I didn't get that impression at all when watching the show. Does anyone still have this episode so they can go back and find where this was said? I watched the first few minutes of my recording again, and didn't hear anything about an airplane.

Jeff Probst: We're on board the Rembrandt heading south off the coast of Panama to a remote location in the Pacific waters of Central America. Down below, sixteen Americans who have no idea the adventure of a lifetime has already begun. After traveling all night, they arrived Panama City early this morning, boarded this vessel, suitcases still in tow, still wearing the same clothes they had on on the plane. Right now they're relaxing under the false assumption that we are several days away from starting the game. They think we're heading out to take publicity photos. What they don't know: this game has already started. And it is full of surprises.

Anyone know if the training and pre-game stuff was done somewhere else? It's quite feasible they did preparation elsewhere, then "flew" to Panama City for the actual taping. I haven't been on the spoiler boards, though, so I have no clue.

Thanks for checking this out. That's why I asked what kind of loons these folks are. Why would you wear that stuff to travel? Very odd.

Granted, ruining an expensive suit by jumping in the ocean and living in it for 30 days wouldn't normally be called lucky but he had several layers on and should be able to stay warm and shed clothes to keep cool.

He did get to plug Armani a few times so they'll probably hook him up for the post-show interview circuit with a couple replacements.

I wonder when they took the real publicity photos that are on CBS.com. I can only remember what Rupert, Nicole, and Lillian were wearing on the show, and in the publicity photos, Lillian is wearing her Scout uniform, while the other 2 are wearing different clothes than what they had in the show. Most of the pictures show the Survivors wearing what appears to be tank tops. Any ideas?

Pix taken stateside before they flew off?

Was anyone else wondering how Sandra (I think) was able to keep her gold chain, when they left the boat? I thought Probst made them give up all of their valuables and put them in bags.

Posted by: loopey

All their valubles they were worried about. I think he made them give up their money and passports, but they could decide on jewlery.

He said take off anything you that you don't want to lose....or something like that.

One of the Drake team members admitted he stashed $40 in his pants, and they used that to purchase the boat ride. So not only did they have their money allowance at the fishing village, they had the other team's shoes, Sandra's necklace, and they didn't have to worry about saving $ for the boat trip.

I thought the guy (Shawn?) kept 40 of the 100 balboas that they were given, to use for the boat ride. Either way, they kicked the Morgan teams butt in the village.

I'm pretty sure that this is correct. I remember him saying that he put balboas in his pocket to begin with so that they didn't have to worry about it later.

My recollection is that he said he put 2 20's in is pocket. So unless the Balboas come in units of 20, I think he was talking about US dollars.
